Gotcha! Fire to the Prisons' Future Projects

From Fire to the Prisons

This message is written for those who are already familiar with Fire to the Prisons Magazine.
If you are not familiar with the publication, free downloads of it in pdf form are available on our website: firetotheprisons.com.

We are also available to answer any questions by contacting firetotheprisons (at) gmail (dot) com.

In issue 9 we briefly mentioned that we have been considering ending the publication.

Since then we have gotten some inspiring messages and new distributors that have brought us to re-consider the decision.

Some of our reasons for considering to end it in the first place were due to the complications of doing a printed publication in the world today. Purely from a mainstream economic standpoint,
magazines are obviously not a stable business opportunity. In the case of Fire to the Prisons, profit was never intended or feasible. Almost 70 percent of our publication was given out for free, while the other 30 percent barely covered our postage. We managed to discover a few interesting fund raising methods, that kept us in print, but forced us to constantly go in and out of debt, waiting for the next opportunity.

Of course a magazine like this can not look to grant writing or business loans; and no matter how liberal or libertarian, we are assuming that no wealthy reader, no matter how guilty, could
have felt any thing other than disgust.

Also with doing a printed magazine today, it is really hard to determine the response. Printing anything seems like nothing more than novelty at this point, which is what maybe leads us to prioritize design over grammar. But while the internet has become the medium for all human communication, putting out a magazine that intends to inspire as opposed to make a profit, is a big risk. You do not know who is reading it, you do not know who is buying it, you do not know who is throwing it away. We can only rely on random letters, conversations, and emails to grasp the response people are having from the content.

This is why we always stress emailing or writing about any concerns, appreciation, or critique.

For the most part those who talk trash typically only focus on our lack of grammatical ability.

What can we say about this? We have mentioned many times that we are not "writers" or "educated".

All in all, some of us really aren't very good at satisfying the expectations of proper english.

We really just don't care. If you can understand the content or intention of the word or phrase, what is the issue? If you are simply so well educated that if something is incorrectly written or misspelled that you can not understand it, or refuse to, than don't read this magazine, and kick your own ass cause your a pretentious schmuck (correctly spelled) face.

Our intention with this publication is to help connect feelings and displays of discontent, and provide a forum and space for dialogue that will help to generalize revolt against all forms of domination.

But while the loudest critique seems to be the most insignificant of concerns, we wish we could hear more from those who actually have something to say regarding the content or effect of this journal.
So before we go on, we are asking anyone who has read Fire to the Prisons magazine to let us know how you feel about the publication, what could be changed, or more importantly, stories of it
inspiring revolutionary thoughts or feelings.

Where we are going from here:

With doing a vastly printed publication, we have built large networks of distribution all over the world, and we
very much intend to continue sending things through all of them.

We have decided to no longer be on a quarterly schedule.

We are now planning on coming out every 6 months.
While keeping our updates on different political prisoners and repression, we have chosen to de-prioritize random news
clips in the future. Instead, we have decided to spend more time compiling quality analysis of different insurrectionary
events or conflicts. With that stated, we also would ask that any readers or supporters please take more of a part in our content. Submissions are always welcome, and very much appreciated on our end. Also editors are always helpful.

We are also spending the extra time to explore new methods of printing and fund raising, to make us a more stable publication.

While our schedule these last few years has forced us to dis-continue our distribution of other magazines, books, or pamphlets, we will also be re-building our distribution, and looking to publish new writing. We plan to have a fully stocked
and up and running literature distribution by August 2010, and issue 10 of Fire to the Prisons (2.0) by October 2010.

Keep it up. Fuck Grammar.

Keep it up. Fuck Grammar.

We (as in you, and I and every anarchist project) need to develop and improve fundraising models based on accumulating many small donations.

Just found this on zinelibrary: http://zinelibrary.info/files/SuggestedDonation_print.pdf

Been touring with a play based on voluntary donations, and trying to talk about voluntary donations as a radical alternative to capitalist forms. If we created an economy entirely based on voluntary donations, the meaning of currency would radically change, money would cease to exist.

Anarchist economics beat capitalism when they solves what capitalism cannot solve. Capitalism cannot solve the free rider problem. We have to.
