TOTW: Dinner and a Movie

netflix and anarchy!

After some years thinking about this, it seems to me like most people enjoy dinner. I’ve also discovered that a lot of them tend to like pictures that move …moving pictures, “movies.” The social sciences suggest that human beings have been doing something like the two things together for a while. Creating and consuming food while creating and consuming passive entertainment.

Veggies over a camp fire and veggie puppets telling alien ancestor stories. Large dining room gatherings and extravagant performances on a stage. Bar food and bar bands. Steak and potatoes with the radio news playing. The ritual pairings can be quite diverse.

So now that the relevance of the topic to the human animal is justified, what about for anarchists?  What could some anarchist takes be on this mundane and ubiquitous practice? That is the question we must answer this week!

So what are your thoughts on this dinner and movie nonsense? What are your dream dinners and movies? Does anything make them anarchic? Can we smash the State by smashing that double-cheeseburger and chillaxing in front of the flat screen? Are there ways to make these experiences less alienating by relying on ourselves and each other? Are these small and frequent events in our lives even worthy of thought from an anarchist perspective?

You tell me hot shot!

The technology gods have blessed us with the ability to have "watch parties" all from the comfort of our own toilets while staring at our movie-watching devices and consuming nutrients delivered right to our apartment doors by poors who one day hope to be doing the same.

There is no need to ever look away from these devices nor leave our homes and interact with others in meat space.

Dinner and a Movie is Symbolic "Life," par excellence, built upon the broken, cancerous bodies of Third-World poors and a pillaged natural world. There is nothing anarchic about it.

interesting way to ignore half the question, maggot. try again?

No.

Why don't you?

if the issue is how capitalism exploits things that humans like to do, like eat (especially with each other) and be entertained, then one tack for this question is how to redirect ourselves away from the convenience of being sold things and towards things like making our own entertainment, etc.

if you'd rather focus on talking about anarchist events that have combined these things, one could remember things like the santa cruz dinners that were organized a decade ago, with people bringing food and things to talk about.

i don't know. just seems like there's plenty to say besides 1. capitalism sucks and 2. technology sucks. both of which are true, duh.

1. Capitalism was never mentioned.
2. You certainly are an entitled one.
3. If you sit on your hand for a few minutes before masturbating it's almost as if another person is touching you.

not sure how me pointing out that you're ignoring half the prompt, and then responding to your assy comment in a non snarky manner,is either entitled or masturbatory. but whatever. maybe you're having a bad day.

as for capitalism, it doesn't hav eto be me ntiond. it's alwyas there.

we consumed dumpster bagels and talked about warhammer mostly. good times, vaery anarchic.

Maybe take a break half way through for some minutes because it’s a three hour film.

Talk. Write Fredy Perlman -esce review of movie and entire Chris Marker catalogue in book format. Go to bed. Wake up next morning. Start filming skateboard videos.

I JUST WANNA WATCH THE BODIES FLYING OUT OF THE COFFINS

small and frequent events in our lives are the MOST worthy of thought from an anarchist perspective, I can't fathom it otherwise.

cooking dinner with folks is great. potlucks are great too. this can get tiresome though, and making one's own dinner alone can be just as great. this can also be tiring, so eating out happens and can be fun too.

most popular media is empty garbage, but so is fast food. every once in awhile something is made with lots of money that challenges the viewer somehow. watching films can be just as rewarding as reading books. films don't have to be passive entertainment, the best ones aren't. but too much sitting hurts.

point is, living in this world is contradictory. being a puritan hasn't helped me.

i'm more of a breakfast/lunch and a youtube video on the phone, dinner and a music playlist before going to sleep type of deal. what was the question again? how is this anarchist? it isn't, but anarchists still gotta live somehow. sharing is caring, corporate is bad, whatever, watchugonnado. best i can come up with is listening to an anarchist podcast while doing the dishes. pirate all the films/music/media/content or idunno

I really think you should make anarchistnews.org more life-stylie -- that's what it's all about, homes! Maybe some tips on home furnishings, topiary garden sculpture --that sort of thing.

I’m against this. Atomization is definitely fine as long as money and cops aren’t involved. The revolution I want is the one where we all just give up on creating our worlds together and be satisfied that at least no one else is creating the world for us. Maybe religions can just be our source of lifestyle inspo
