BASTARD Conference 2023

The Berkeley Anarchist Study Group will present the 2023 BASTARD Conference on Saturday, November 11th at the Omni Commons (4799 Shattuck Ave in Oakland). BASTARD is an annual gathering of presentations and conversations about anarchy. It functions as a setting for participants in the study group along with friends and accomplices to share their reflections on the beautiful idea. It also serves as a place for anarchists to encounter each other amidst the ruins, with a view towards new friendships and endeavors.

Our 2023 theme is “The Hydra”. Two heads for every one severed, the golden sword of wisdom, poisonous atrabile, apparent defeat… What do this myth and its resonances have to say for anarchists? Come find out!

Alongside a familiar cohort of profligates from the Study Group, our special guests this year are Andrew Culp and Eduardo Subirats. Andrew will be giving a preview of his new book on anarchaeology and Eduardo will discuss Quixote as trickster and mad lover. This, plus talks on Leviathan, anarchic subjectivity, antimilitarism, Echidna & Typhon, the end of empire, waste, the act of writing, a somatherapy workshop, a game of anarchistic madlibs, and some surprises.

Free to all, though donations to benefit the Omni and the Study Group are appreciated. Presentations starting every hour, so drop by any time during the day. Food too! See you there.

what time does it start? is there a schedule for these talks/workshops? who else is presenting besides Andrew Culp and Eduardo Subirats?

so many questions

Hi Nettle,
Start time is 8am PST
The talks schedule is first come first serve.
There will be only one mic/pa so any would-be speakers (not named Andrew or Eduardo) will have to work it out amongst themselves. There will be no workshops because BASTARD are against work.
See you there.

explain this then - "the act of writing, a somatherapy workshop" lol.

thumb wrestling for time slots?? I'd watch that...

Yes, astonishingly I forgot to include the time. One of many oversights on my part, I’m sure. Thanks for drawing my attention to what should have been obvious.

The event is from 12-9pm. We will make another post in the coming weeks with the schedule and flyer. It’s the usual cohort: Jason, Lew, myself, JH, LD, Athena, Magazine, and a few others plus our guests. I chose to omit the full presentation descriptions as this is an anarchist event, so naturally getting everyone to send me theirs is an infamous trial. A full schedule with descriptions will appear in a final post a bit closer to the event.

just came here to point out that there are two different times listed as the start time in the comment thread here.

going out on a limb here but it seems likely that 8am is a wee bit early for anarchists. just sayin'.

Oooh, so anarchists are disabled huh? Nice discrete ableism there Nettle!
