Inheritance

Weird situation. I’ll try to give all needed details.

Long story short I’m coming into a lot of inheritance due to an early death of a wealthy family member.

Roughly £700,000. I’m going to take some action to secure myself and my extended family financially. But honestly, that’s like £300,000 totally maybe. This is a lot of money. Until I think of better long term use of the money I’m throwing it into a “ethical” investment thing. Basically only better than using a bank because I pay more money and get to make sure none of the money goes to tobacco, weapons, oil ext.

In a year ish I’ll actually have the time to think and use the money so it’s just going to sit until then.

I’m never going to get a chance to have this much impact again and I honestly feel like it’s a large responsibility.

Suggestions, ideas, ethical (anarchist) perspectives whatever. I’m struggling to process this mentally being so close to it myself and it all feels so so strange.

I will not be updating but will be monitoring comments

ive had convos with anarchist

ive had convos with anarchist friends about what if someone comes upon this kind of money. how would we use it. if a friend won the lottery what do we do? how do we consult each other? how do we support prisoners/defendants, anarchist spaces, aging anarchists, etc. how do we avoid the whole "im rich now time to buy a yacht, luxury car, or a cabin on 50 acres" response and take care of ourselves and each other. I think bloomington's boxcar books was started in part by someone getting an inheritance of something thousand and having this question.

I think it's honestly pretty brave for someone to bring

up this touchy subject on here...

300,000 british pounds is a lot of money, what is that like...half a million dollars? I like that you want to share it with people you care about. I don't know if it makes any sense to look at the ethics of "where the money goes", because it leaves your hands you have lost control over who uses it for what.

You should definitely use that money to relax and do things you've wanted to do but haven't been able to afford. I'm not going to comment on what lifestyle you choose, as that's up to you. "Ethical investing" is a very sketchy subject matter, because there's a lot of businesses who pretend that the things they do are "ethical" and "sustainable" when it's just normal capitalist type of behaviors.

I personally don't recommend just giving it way to people charitably though unless you know them very well, giving away money to strangers can be really disappointing, and charities themselves won't necessarily enrich your life. The money in the end probably will end up going to weapons and oil (as that's a pretty huge money pit...), but you could use it for public transportation and a subscription to a local pool, because swimming is a really healthy form of exercise that makes you feel really good.

Congratulations!

Learn how to live off the

Learn how to live off the investment income and then just do anarchy full time. Or have a part time job and budget a sustainable amount u can do to fund projects u like for a long period.

I would not try to blow all the money at once. Use it to not work and or have a annual amount u budget to find projects u like. Tho I would keep this secret cuz ppl will just bug u and get mad at u bc most anarchists think being broke is the ideal.

not OP, I like most of this but investing isn't

a get rich quick thing, most people who try to profit from stock trading (even a little bit) either fail or developing gambling addictions. The profitable investing normally involves having the money locked away forever.

But i agree, giving money away is normally not a good idea, even if they are friends and family members. I gave some money away to friends who i felt were underprivileged and I very much regretted it later because they lost interest in spending time with me in real life. It's a nice scam though...politely asking for things! We should all learn from these "friends" i used to have.

I don't mean whatever silly

I don't mean whatever silly Robin hood stuff. Making money investing is very easy if u just do a large index fund of the American economy or something. That's how lots and lots of rich ppl just live off their wealth. It's not complex at all. Ppl get in co guard bc they try to do silly day trading which is just gambling if u don't have connections to insider info.

I mean I say do anarchy to basically Mena just do stuff u want rather than have a job and be a boring normie. I consider doing what u want be it sleeping eating whatever to be doing anarchy.

With a chunk of money like

With a chunk of money like that, you could pretty quickly and consistently help out a lot of anarchist activity/projects by donating all the dollar amounts being asked for on anarchist fundraising websites like https://www.firefund.net/ and https://afund.info/. There are probably other websites like those too.

Also, if I remember correctly, some years ago, someone used their inheritance to get a longstanding anarchist bookstore in Montreal out of the endless rent cycle by buying the building for them. The strategy of finding a permanent home for an established anarchist project seems like a decent way to ensure your money is more of an "investment" in the long-term health of the anarchist movement.

Maybe the Kate Sharpley Library could become in North America a similar version of what the CIRA libraries are in France & Switzerland (& still Japan?) if someone bought them a permanent building to house their library?

Just some thoughts.
