And while we're at it... Remember what happened two years ago, before there was a popular movement of occupations, there were short bursts of experimentation and heartbreak (that's not all that was broken). In one such event, an occupied parking garage party “turned violent.” Or rather, an avenue of lost memories, cobbled together with the toil of those who were before us, was enchanted by a terrible spirit. That thin veneer that separates proletarians from every potency of life was violated. Property: shops, art, cars. 1886, that bloody mess, haunted the evening, recalling what was lost: that is to say conjuring a long narrative of the sickening loss of life to value. Those arrested, guilty or not, still await trial, traumatized by the police and this justice of Law. This May Day, may the comrades of the Asheville 11 be in our hearts, and may a terrible spirit enchant this world.

Spring 2012: repair what is irreparable.</td><td><img title="Please stop trying to reclaim the word proletarian. Even precarious (yuck) at least sounds 20th century." src="http://anarchistnews.org/files/pictures/2012/prayingmantis.jpg"></td></t...

<strong>How to use this poster:</strong>

<em>The poster has been designed for easy black and white xerox printing, and viewing.</em>

In the space marked “Local Meeting Point,” one can add their own information using a marker, or for the tech and design savvy, Open in Adobe Illustrator, check options for outlined text, unless you have Haas Grotesk (Helvetica, with original metal kerning-spaces). The type should be sized from-13-21 and if you don't have Hass Grotesk, probably no one will notice if you use Helvetica. In Adobe Acrobat, Tools, Typewriter. Again choose Hass Grotesk or Helvetica with a bold weight (I'd suggest 75bold). Left Justify to the “L” in “Local” or all the way to Left, at the beginning of the doted line.

And ain't no one gonna get their feelings hurt if you decide a more coherent poster serves you local needs better, but if you do put up some posters we're always happy see some flicks.

General Strike Harder

1. Agreed on the call to re-cognize the gestures made in Asheville. A side note on this: the defense website for those indiscriminately arrested has not been updated recently, so it is difficult for us on the periphery of the milieu, or we who do not know anyone in the southeast personally, to know of updates. It would be helpful to know what is needed, though I suppose I could find this through a private email.

2. Aren't the "[avenues] of lost memories, cobbled together with the toil of those who were before us" already haunted? Does not "a terrible spirit" already "enchant the world"?
The ghosts of the previous generations, all they could be but were not, are already everywhere. What spirit can we conjure that is more terrible?
We want to feel powerful and be dangerous again (for the first time?), yes? Why don't we just say that? What does "terrible" add?

3. I do not understand what these three sentences mean exactly: "That thin veneer that separates proletarians from every potency of life was violated. Property: shops, art, cars. 1886, that bloody mess, haunted the evening, recalling what was lost: that is to say conjuring a long narrative of the sickening loss of life to value."

I assume the second sentence is a tautology, but are shops, art, and cars the "thin veneer" the separate proletarians from every potency of life? I disagree with "a-news worker" who thinks we need to get rid of the word proletarian, but surely pieces of property are not the thin veneer that separates proles from "every potency of life". Cars, shops, and art are just objects. It is how we relate to them that is the thin veneer. I think this is the sense of these three sentences but I think I only get that because I already agree.

4. Let us continue to prepare for the Messiah (revolution) but I am not convinced judgement day (the first days a.t.r.), or "the End of the World" (as we know it under capitalism), is nearing any time soon. So how do we prepare? Or should we charge wildly forward in a burst of experimentation and risk "facing the police and this justice of Law"?
This is not a question of morals or ethics but a question of tactics.
I fear anarchists may just be the "solitary killers" (killers of windows at least) of Raoul Vaneigem's passage:

"My sympathy for the solitary killer ends where tactics begin; but perhaps tactics need scouts driven by individual despair. However that may be, the new revolutionary tactics -- which will be based indissolubly on the historical tradition and on the practice, so widespread and so disregarded, of individual realization -- will have no place for people who only want to mimic the gestures of Ravachol or Bonnot. But on the other hand these tactics will be condemned to theoretical hibernation if they cannot, by other means, attract collectively the individuals whom isolation and hatred for the collective lie have already won over to the rational decision to kill or to kill themselves. No murderers -- and no humanists either! The first accept death, the second impose it. let ten men meet who are resolved on the lightning of violence rather than the long agony of survival; from this moment, despair ends and tactics begin."

Exactly. Open revolt not clandestine action!

IGTT 3/10

feeling generous eh?

I just googled "IGTT," cuz I'm an oldassman who is confused and frightened by the internet.

the proper term is oldfag.

-trltrt

I did the same and was confused about the relation between Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Tests and hip anarchist posters, until I realized my comment was being rated 3/10.

Despite my misgivings vocalized above I like the poster just fine.
<3s

I still don't know what it means.

Good, reject the oppression of google. Seriously.

^ has obviously never been to jail before.

No, I haven't been. I was just congratulating that poster on resisting the common urge to google everything you have never heard of before by being too lazy to google the acronym, which I still haven't googled.

I Give This Troll.

get arrested once. then you'll stop complaining about the "oppression" of google.
seriously, who gives a fuck? consumer choices are for fucking liberals desperately trying to trick themselves into having delusions they have power in this world because they were told it was a "democracy."
this is a fucking capitalist dictatorship.

You have outed me as not being a stoic, prison-hardened curmudgeon, and outed yourself as not having a sense of humor.

'this is a fucking capitalist dictatorship.'

Jesus I'm glad I have you by my side in this war. Do you tell this to everyone who makes jks about people's excessive internet usage?

"Fucking liberal! I've been to prison, I know oppression, I have seen the heart of this fucking capitalist dictatorship! Don't even make jokes about oppression if they involve google!"

yes. exactly. now back to my push ups.

"No murderers -- and no humanists either! The first accept death, the second impose it. let ten men meet who are resolved on the lightning of violence rather than the long agony of survival; from this moment, despair ends and tactics begin."

how is this not a call for open, social revolt instead of individual, clandestine acts of desperation???

This isn't from the article. But obviously it's not individual revolt. It's talking about ten people meeting up. Tens of tens of tens of tens of tens of people. Get it?

open revolt and clandestine action!

I hope that is sarcastic.

HEY!
You're not supposed to make that critique until AFTER the general strike!

lol. <3

yay ive been looking for a poster that will attract the hipsters to the general strike here!!! thanks ief!

ps any stupid robot could read these capchtas.

can't tell if serious...

After the singularity the captchas will be to keep humans from spamming robot message boards.

But first we must take aim at the robot humans in our midst. They've found a way to pass the captcha.

take aim with rebel robot machines anarcho-cannibalism

"The general strike in this century is a day of generalized rebellion for the exploited."

I made a second version.
Kisses,
Liam

Obviously it's no Liam. There are no diagonal lines.

This is one of the stupidest posters I've seen in a while, you fucking hipster moron. Can you really imagine people putting this bullshit up in the street?

Your poster communicates nothing to anybody other than insurrecto-fans and wannabes. Your poster sucks. You are jerking off in an ideological echo chamber, ans this tends to prove that insurrectionary anarchism is, in its own juvenile and hyper-mystified way, just as counter-subversive as the rest of the left, even if it isn't simply a part of the left

And nobody is doing jack in the SF Bay Area about the next general-strike-that-wasn't, either.

yes! we need to focus on organizing the MASSES! stop making things for people who think and feel like you do! it's so un-self-sacrificing!

you must nail yourself to the red and black cross, comrade!!!

Remember remember the mass line.

it says general strike, and effectively frames general strike as "no work, no school, no chores" and then "nobody and nothing works," which happens everywhere, during the general strike. I don't think this poster is designed to be the flagship of the may general strike propganda, or else it wouldn't be coming out a few weeks before its supposed to go down. I think people either know its going down, or are going to learn about it on may day. But I don't really see what more you could want from a poster that's supposed to accent the existing organizing.

If it's the aesthetics of it, that doesn't really seem important, since it's not the main graphic dialogue of occupy may day stuff. But its cool, you don't have to put it up or anything.

your word has been received as Truth, comrade. i will print one thousand copies of this tomorrow and distribute them to the Masses of my god forsaken community and we will apply them to telephone poles like THERE IS NO TOMORROW AND then we will thrive off the blood of our lovers and never never never ever die

"I think people either know its going down, or are going to learn about it on may day..."

The people who "know it's going down" are a fraction of a single percentage point of the entire population of exploited and dispossessed people in the US, a small number of protest ghetto habitues. I don't know what's up with this elsewhere but it's apparent that there hasn't been an even minimal effective effort to get the word out for this upcoming "general strike" in the San Francisco Bay Area. This "general strike" is now on schedule to be a much bigger fiasco that the "general strike" of last November.

The Nov. 2nd event was a pleasant protest ghetto event, a big demo akin to the rowdy demos in SF's Financial District the first day of Bush Two's Iraq War. That's not a bad thing. Personally I liked it; I had fun. But in theory Occupy is supposed to be about moving things to a deeper and more ambitious level, and with the actual number of people walking off the job in Oakland being somewhere down around two percent the Nov. 2nd "general strike" was, putting it mildly, not a terribly effective mass strike.

Among other things, in a US context, it would have been much smarter to put out a call for everyone to call in sick on May First, since the phrase "general strike" means nothing to an overwhelming majority of working people in this country. A call for a mass Call-In-Sick-To-Work day would have produced better results.

If there is anything credible or vaild or real about a supposed opposition to capitalist society, it has to be about mainstream working people and the society at large, and not just the need to cop an insurrecto-buzz of drop-out culture and subculture types. For all their streety and implacable posturing the vandalism-lite folks are in reality sluggish and timid individuals -- this grandiosity of their posturing and the paucity of their sustained collective acts is no surprise. They have no staying power. They consistently fail to exhibit any credible evidence of committment to irreversible liberatory social transformation. "Insurrectionary" anarchism my ass; in the context of the contemporary United States this shit is all about being entertained. In this it is in lock-step harmony with the prevalent ethos of a consumer capitalist civilization.

If you offer the rest of the (internet) world a poster to hang on walls in public, you are presumably attempting to communicate something to people outside of your immediate social set; you are recognizing that this is both necessary and desirable. If the poster fails to communicate, then this is all that matters here; it has failed to do what it is supposed to do. Compensating by acting snarky about the entire concept of having anything to say to the world at large says it all regarding the self-indulgent, irrelevant and wholly harmless character of your pose.

PS to the last post: to give credit where credit is due, the bottom 1/6th or 1/7th of your poster is fine.

Now if you can completely redo the entire upper 1/6th to 1/7th of it to make a persuasive case for what we all want, you will have done a fine thing.

what about the other 4/6th to 5/7th?
lol!

I've already addressed this; see long comment above.
