T.W.A.T. Action Report

In the early morning hours, paint bombs sailed into a camera tower protecting the gentrification condos on 36th and Adeline St. in Oakland, CA. Pink paint splattered onto the instruments of surveillance, and the bandits left a cryptic tag before disappearing into the night.

As women moving through this society, we find ourselves constantly under the male gaze. Strangers evaluate our bodies everyday. Our images are taken, altered, and force-fed back to us everywhere we look. Men in government and business further invade our lives with surveillance cameras whenever we dare to move out of the domestic sphere and into public space.

As those who live in and love Oakland, we recognize the proliferation of surveillance technology as part of the gentrification machine. They make yuppies feel safe and comfortable. They make people of color, the poor, the marginalized, the subversive, feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Our autonomy is being leeched from us. Security is terror.

As anarchists, we recognize increasing surveillance as an attempt to suppress dissent. The imminent creation of the Domain Awareness Center - a public-sponsored, privately run entity that aims to integrate all surveillance footage in Oakland - exposes the complete and total enmeshment of state and corporate interests. With the DAC, there will no longer be any "private" cameras. All images will be aggregated, and mined for information. This means that everything is fair game.

As Oakland anarchist women, we're sick of the machismo and militant posturing combined with little concrete action to back it up. We're sick of proving our competence and radicalism enacting an agenda written by anarchist men. We're sick of infighting. If we can't all work together, we can at least respect and support one another from a distance. Let our rivalries be productive. It's time to go back to basics. It's time to remember who our enemies are.

To the state we say nothing.

To all those fighting the DAC, who have seen their pleas at city hall fall on deaf ears, we issue an invitation to join us in taking the next logical step.

To all the radical women and transfolks fighting for space and respect, stop relying on men to validate you. They don't own militancy. Get with a few badass ladies and git 'er done. It's way funner. We promise.

And to all the insurrectionary dudes negating from their armchairs, we issue a challenge. Form a Camover team and come get it. We will whoop your fucking ass.

Give the State Pink Eye.

This is really heartwarming. Three cheers for this proliferating in the bay!

#logicalstep

"As women moving through this society, we find ourselves constantly under the male gaze. Strangers evaluate our bodies everyday"

guess what bitches, some myn find themselves under gazes and shit too. wheres your feminism now?

And "Men in government and business"...? fuck you

fuck yeah, get it y'all.

"To all those fighting the DAC, who have seen their pleas at city hall fall on deaf ears, we issue an invitation to join us in taking the next logical step."

And I would like to issue an invitation to you to actually hit the cameras if you're even slightly serious about fighting surveillance.

"... we're sick of the machismo and militant posturing ... We will whoop your fucking ass."

Hmm. Fuck outta here.

Looks like the cops who troll this site are discomfited by this action! Well done, friends.

Wait... was this cryptic sign you used part the "Cicada 3301" meme, or it's just Worker messing up the cards!? I was really convinced this whole conspiracy was a new viral marketing plot for William Gibson to sell books.

"We're sick of proving our competence and radicalism enacting an agenda written by anarchist men. We're sick of infighting. I like that.

yes: our enemies are anarchist men. the reactionary element within and without, as sister amazon put it recently.
solidarity never - purges forever!
if you hate machismo, out-macho the dudes!

So glad. I hope all the men who are offended take out even more cameras. Win or lose men the cameras will be destroyed!
Thank ya'll so much

wait, i'm confused, you say 'take out even more cameras' but here no cameras were taken out. i mean, you did see the picture of this, right? are we looking at the same thing? the fact that folks don't see the dissonance between what is written in this reportback and what the picture shows is pretty ridiculous. people are hating on this because it is, despite the author's ramblings, nothing but pointless posturing. even the kono shit was better than this, and that wasn't much to write home about, either. more actual cameras disabled, less bullshit jibber-jabber please.

Yeah, because eventually we'll get all of them right? It's all jibber jabber, one, ten, one hundred cameras, it's all jibber jabber you imbecile. In order to challenge the surveillence state you're going to need something more powerful. Say, hm, I dunno, maybe, something like a surveilence state?

Kinda neat if you ask me...

And finally, this was by far the best line:
"And to all the insurrectionary dudes negating from their armchairs, we issue a challenge. Form a Camover team and come get it. We will whoop your fucking ass."
Let's get out there fellas and how them ladies how real men handle the surveillance state!!!!!

Right, how short sighted of me. Sorry if I sounfd obvious, but are you suggesting revolutionaries take the reins of the surveillance industry. We already have that with people like Jobs and the Microsoft Guy (drawing a blank). The question is, does surveillance go or does it just change. And that also goes for the rest of this shitty old "work" business.

"but are you suggesting revolutionaries take the reins of the surveillance industry"

HELL no, what the hell man

Radicals need to take the reigns of all industries, then decide democratically, what to do with them, which ones are worth keeping and which ones are just waste and war.

Industry works at several levels. People who design surveillance technology are not generally the same ones that use it. The tech expert at the surveillance company is not usually the same as the analyst which makes for a major point of exploitation. Western social science operates much like natural science, fordism and taylorism, modularization and a strict division of labor. This is also how computer systems tend to be designed. Most of the time that modules are not interchangeable comes down to a question of proprietary design. This makes the issue more complicated.

Further, individuals at these companies tend to divide their lives into work life and personal life, again, the Western idea that all aspects of reality be divided, categories and become mutually exclusive, I am not you and you are not me. The antithesis of collective, the reification of absolute subjective individuality. Ironic, since it is subjective individuality that science sought to overcome in the first instance.

In terms of data, the surveillance industry trips over the same context of modularization it relies on so heavily. What I post on @news effectively belongs to @news, the same with google, yahoo or anyone else. In reality, it belongs to the service provider, but the point maintains. To simply know something about someone is not the same as being able to incriminate them, to have an army is not the same as commanding an army.

At the end of the day, two problems come to the forefront (for me) as the most pertinent:
Who holds the reins of technology (mostly surveillance) and can the human race continue on its present course given the anarchic nature of technology, the access to weaponry through networks of trust, and the environmental devastation that its production causes on the earth.

I figure if the US ever gets attacked by a hacker with remote control technology, the US's own military will have given them the access willingly. Not so much hacking but we have trust issues these days. Now go play your video games as you are thinking too much and that makes you cranky.

how about no, liberal

how about doodoo doodoo people long live the NBS (Nothing But Shit) society!!! I can't even resort to the typical, nothing better to say? Nope, obviously not. My turd is evidently superior.

Above commenter wasn't sending you a turd because he-she thinks it's superior, but because it's the best of what your idea deserves. But sure, yeah... go ahead and self-manage Monsanto, or the NSA! Social-democrats will have more success in writing sci-fi fantasy books than any sort of actiivism.

Just a tip... the new Disney Star Wars will provide with a profitable ground for science fantasy literature/gaming, if you're interested in reforming the industry. Just sayin.

For quicker and more discrete cam-o-tage, I recommend those chinese-made high-power laser pointers. IR laser should be the best bet, though quite dangerous. But anything 100 mw and upwards, especially the "Class IV" ones, will fry the diodes of those CCTVs, completely disabling them.

There's a good forum on the subject, but I'm not going to expose them.

there's few human operators of such an integrated surveillance network compared to "front end" surveillance devices such as cameras, and without humans disposed to work as operators, the surveillance devices and networks can be nearly useless, or severely crippled

but you didnt hear it from me okay

And, there's comparatively few businesses in the "global" surveillance industry. If most of these were to change business, and the remaining couldn't cover the market because of added costs of having to work closely with police, military or mercenary services, surveillance in many places would be severely crippled too.

But I said nothing, okay

Quit bullshitting on others, jerk.

The day you know what the NSA and its police are about, you'll be regretting all your lame attempts at "shooting the messenger" on this website and elsewhere. Think you're on their side? They aren't on yours...

the fuck you on about, liberal?

...sounds like you didnt get what i wasnt saying at all

So what if I didn't? I suppose that to your superior intellect (who for some reason couldn't realize the inadequacy of using triple entendre literary devices squeezed through faceless, few sentences long comments) I'm not intelligent enough. Or you're the one who's just too lazy to actually attempt COMMUNICATE your views... if you got any.

please forgive my rudeness

okidays!

"And, there's comparatively few businesses in the "global" surveillance industry."

This doesn't sound factually accurate. What is the basis of this statement. Probably a very narrow and rigid definition of ""globa" surveillence industry" where I would include all social media, search engines, pretty much the whole internet, digital media, military industrial complex, police industrial complex, and well, it seems to me that all social organization is being turned towards organizing around surveilance to do away with wage in its totality and move towards a system of rations. Imperialism without the pretense of capitalism.

But again, if you feel up to it, elaborate on the thesis of your argument. I'm listening (no pun intended).

Factually? By surveillance industry I had in mind... like, some businesses more directly related with some surveillance technologies, their research, manufacture, distribution... Yeah, different from what is usually called surveillance industry, perhaps...

I elaborated on /anok/chan

pretty sure the new building at 36th and adeline is actually low-income housing, not "gentrification condos"...

I'm looking at the website for their Oakland properties (http://www.sahahomes.org/properties?field_city_tid[9]=9&&page=1) and I'm not seeing anything at 36th and Adeline.

It's entirely possible that this *is* nevertheless low-cost housing, in which case, I have to urge everyone to do your fucking research before embarking on an action.

I'm not from Oakland myself, so I don't exactly know what's up in this particular case, but if a housing development is for people with 30-50% AMI (Average Median Income), it's not 'gentrification condos' whatever it looks like- poor people shouldn't have to live in concrete shitholes.

That said, I applaud any and all attempts to blackout surveillance cameras at such developments, not because they protect the houses, but because they're designed to watch the behavior of the residents.

just a few of the points from this post worth highlighting:

"Men in government and business further invade our lives with surveillance cameras..."

if you think women in gov and biz aren't doing the exact same thing, you are delusional. for sure there are MORE men in those roles (i am not denying patriarchy), but don't pretend women aren't just as power-hungry and oppressive. ok magdeline merkel thatchbright?

"Security is terror."

i like that.

"We're sick of proving our competence and radicalism enacting an agenda written by anarchist men."

1. who are you proving your radicalism to, and why?
2. enacting an agenda written by anyone other than yourself may prove some sort of competence (eg, at following the agenda of others), but radical? not even close.

jeez, i guess you don't have to be a troll to be a hater.

men are terror. terrorize men. it all makes perfect sense when you think about it like a crazy person. now go through a paint balloon at a wall and write a communique about how you hit a cop in the face with it. a male cop of course. there are no female cops. it's only men who have power and who terrorize the weak helpless victim women. sorry i mean wimmyn.

seriously…stick to your marxist grad studies or shitty punk shows or smelly dumpstered quinoa collectives or whatever…insurrection is not your forte. comrade beet wrote that she don't give a fuck about the insurrection. and if she's a feminist then it's true.

The fucking nail on the fucking head.
