Against Capitalism and Climate Change

The pandemic has caused many people to question how food is grown and who controls its production and distribution. Capitalist agricultural practices are a major cause of climate change and food insecurity around the world, including the UK. Good quality food, like housing, is a basic necessity and should be available to all.

Recently, you may have noticed that ‘Counter Terrorism Policing' decided that the AF is enough of a threat to include our logo in their guide, now withdrawn, which aimed to advise teachers and medical staff about potential extremists. Joining us in the guide were other anarchist-linked groups, such as Class War and Solidarity Federation but also groups that have a reputation for being a lot more tame in their political outlook such as Greenpeace, Extinction Rebellion (XR), and Stand Up to Racism.

As we said when we were still in the Anarchist Federation back in 2015, "Grassroots groups and organisations emerging around housing and opposition to austerity must maintain their grassroots outlook and their horizontal organisation. The alternative is distraction from their vital action by the Corbyn circus and its left-wing cheerleaders; a path which only leads to disappointment and betrayal." And indeed, the path has led to disappointment, with a massive Tory majority. ---- The Left reacted with horror to the results, Richard Seymour writing for Novara Media that "Disaster nationalism has just cut through the Labour heartlands, and there is no obvious solution. The seat losses may be reversible; as Momentum suggests in an email to its supporters, the margins of Tory victory being small. But the swings were huge, and the breach is historic. To rebuild any kind of Left in these constituencies, after decades of neglect and local Labour rule being pretty useless, will sadly require more than a six-week election cycle and a passionate campaign run by heroic volunteers. It's no consolation that we probably have ten years of vicious Conservative government in which to do that rebuilding."
This is a call out to take part in what will be the third Anarchist Festival, happening across Britain and Ireland. The idea is simple: groups or individuals put on their own anarchist events and actions, concentrating on the dates of Friday 1st to Monday 4th May 2020, and the programme is collated and promoted by us on our website and social media( 1 and 2).
On the 20th of September, around the world, hundreds of organisations are coming together under the banner of Earth Strike to hold a general strike for the climate. ---- As part of our general activity, some AF members have been involved with Earth Strike UK, either autonomously or via the Green Anti-Capitalist Front/GAF (Wales), and implicit support has been given from the AF during various actions. Now, as agreed by our Federal Delegates Meeting on the 17th of August, the Anarchist Federation endorses and puts our full organisational support behind Earth Strike.
