State of Repression
The build-up to the COP21 set the tone for the entirety of the counter-summit. Although the recent mobilisations against global summits have been met with ever increasing repression, the increased powers provided by the state of emergency allowed the French State to exercise its full control over the COP21. Indeed, the aftermath of the Paris attacks created a window of opportunity for the ruling class to criminalize all expressions of revolt through an array of anti-association and protests laws.
Environmental activists have been taking more risks in attacking the root causes of climate change. From the #ShellNo protests in Seattle to the recent lock-down In Bellingham, WA where activists chained themselves to a #ShellOil support vessel set to leave the marine waters for Alaska oil drilling, direct action in the Pacific Northwest is alive and well.
Through libertarian communism we can reach a point of balance between the capacities to produce, the needs of populations, and the limits of the biosphere. We cannot build our future in opposition to the rest of life. The ideology of domination must be broken everywhere, so that humanity can find a safe future on its planet.
The last battle against the A27 at Arundel culminated with a tree protest camp being set up in the woods on the proposed route of the road – see this report in the Indymedia archives.
And it ended in a spectacular and unexpected victory.
