Anarchist Nikos Romanos ends hunger strike

Greek anarchist and convicted robber Nikos Romanos has ended a hunger strike after parties agreed on an amendment that will allow him to attend on-campus classes while wearing an electronic bracelet, Kathimerini understands.

Romanos had been on hunger strike since November 10 over authorities' refusal to grand him an educational leave to attend classes at a Greek technical college (TEI). He stopped receiving liquids on Wednesday morning.

​​On December 6, 2008, police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas shot 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in the Athenian district of Exarcheia. Grigoropoulos died in the arms of his friend Nikos Romanos and the shooting sparked a wave of violent riots in Athens that spread across the country. High school and university students took to the streets to protest police brutality, in what would be remembered as one of the most violent periods of citizen unrest in recent history.

2 December 2014 ~ Following a big solidarity protest to anarchist Nikos Romanos, where 8.000-10.000 people took part in Athens last night, fierce riots broke out in the “Exarchia” area of Athens, while Romano’s health is in a critical condition (22 days on hunger strike) and the greek government pretends he does not exist.

Last spring, I sat university entrance exams from inside the prison and got admitted to a faculty in Athens. According to their laws, since September 2014, I am eligible for educational furloughs to regularly attend classes from the beginning of the term.
