From Little Black Cart
A lot has changed in the past quarter. The heat of summer finally abated and the El Nino rains have begun! There has been a noticeable downtick in drama around these parts and the fourth annual East Bay Book & Conversation Event went swimmingly. We are very proud of the titles we have to offer you this quarter and look forward to your feedback.
We have covered this topic a few times before but it bears repeating. The solutions that technology gives to social problems rarely solve them and usually come with unforseen consequences. Let's look at the current brouhaha around PB as a case in point. For starters PB has never had an account on @news (which is done here). Additionally Drupal gives @news the option to "write in" a username which PB and many other users take advantage of as a way to have conversations over time.
The past week or two has included joyous events like a Drupal failure due to database issues, an ongoing issue with the recent comments block due to the same, and finally a total power supply failure that took the site offline for nearly 24 hours. The site being unavailable is what I would point to as to why there has been such a major downturn in comments and traffic on the site. Unless its something else.
We are a bite-size group of people who agree on many things, including the importance of humor; looking at actions (our own as well as others') with history, context, and imagination; the complicated and contradictory role of technology on human relations; and a desire for a vibrant and diverse anarchy. We will do our best to leave our egos out of the mix in moderating anews, but we also don't expect people to like all (some of you won't even like most) of the decisions we make and that is certainly not our criteria.
As of this date (August 17th, 2015) Worker has officially resigned as the figurehead and moderator of anarchistnews.org. Worker will no longer be the operator of this site. That task will now be passed to an editorial crew named thecollective.
Further notes are from Worker about their time at anarchistnews.org
Worker has served as a useful nom de plume for the operation of this website but it has expired as a position I can reasonably stand by any longer.
This is going to be the first in what I hope is a series of editorials that we host on relevant topics. We'll sticky the post for a 5 or 7 day period and see if we can have some civil and compelling conversations about topical (and site related) topics.
We'll start with a standard one.
What is the purpose of comments on anarchistnews.org and what is troubling about moderation of these comments.
