TOTW: Communication

dawgz > society!

Hello. Never before has there been so much communication within the anarchist space, but perhaps, so little [sic]. There are so many podcasts, news sites for specific anarchist locales, video projects hosted outside of YouTube, blogging platforms hosted away from the big sites, and social media links the plenty that lead outside of the new normal, among the plethora, if you're following closely.

TOTW: Anarchy and Trauma

TOTW - Anarchy and Trauma

I know that, before I had ever encountered critical discourse or radical politics, before I'd attended my first protest or meeting, before I had debated anyone on political theories either face to face or on the Internet, my first experiences of disenfranchisement towards the state, capitalism, civilisation, etc., and desires to rebel came from direct personal experiences that were mostly, in some way or another, traumatic. The trauma of childhood poverty, of bullying teachers in school, of family members dependent on drugs and alcohol, these all left me with a feeling of "I hate this shit", long before I had read anything on economics or anarchism.

TOTW: How Would Anarchists Organise An Inter-National Sports Event?

I've never come across anyone identifying as an anarchist who is opposed to fun. Arguably, fun seems to be a required aspect of any anarchist-activity, for it not to simply be reproducing workerist narratives that perpetuate the mechanisms of boredom. I find boredom to be absent in spaces of anarchy.

TOTW: Eco-fascism?

?

Eco-fascism. It's something I hear lots about but understand little of. I've read these recent essays, these recent mainstream news articles, and a head-spinning number of tweets. One tweet that caught my eye was an anarchist asking for a 'substantive working definition' of the word. There were no substantive working definitions in the replies. I've asked questions left, right and centre and I'm none the wiser. And so I'm reaching out to you, anews commenters, to help me make sense of it all.

TOTW: As The Wheel Turns

"History says the revolution attains “permanence,” or at least duration, while the uprising is “temporary.” In this sense an uprising is like a “peak experience” as opposed to the standard of “ordinary” consciousness and experience...But such moments of intensity give shape and meaning to the entirety of a life. The shaman returns - you can’t stay up on the roof forever - but things have changed, shifts and integrations have occurred - a difference is made." - Hakim Bey

TOTW: "The Boogaloo"

A couple of months ago, we spoke of civil war, not as passive spectators, but asking what if anarchists could be its main agitators. That hypothetical turning point seems to be foisted upon us. Recently, "professional anarchists" and "ANTIFA"tm have been accused of being "outside agitators" and the "terrorist" protagonists in the ongoing riots. Without denying our pedigree, we acknowledge that this time around our supposed role as protagonists is an exaggeration by the media and the government, as scaremongering and scapegoating tactics. So let's give credit where it's due: meet The Boogaloo.

TOTW: Life's a riot

This topic of the week is about riots. Riots have been a time-honored tradition for anarchists, and I’m curious what their significance is to you. This week we found ourselves in the heat of things, though with hints of being overtaken by the trauma of state violence, good samaritans cleaning up “their community” the morning after, and years of legal support spoil things.

TotW: Helping People

There's an old story about a man who ran up to a woman on the street, threw her to the ground, rolled her around, and beat at her. He was then called a hero and given a medal. She had been on fire, and he was putting the fire out and saving her life. It's a story about story telling, but also about how context changes the meaning of what we do.
