Van Deusen Runs For Vermont AFL-CIO President

David Van Deusen, co-founder of the Green Mountain Anarchist Collective and former member of NEFAC & ARA has announced that he is running for President of the 10,000 member Vermont AFL-CIO as part of a new progressive slate (Vermont AFL-CIO United!). The union election takes place in September. Van Deusen, as an AFL-CIO District Vice President, recently led the Green Mountain Central Labor Council into supporting the YPG/YPJ and the struggle in Rojava (as part of that support the VT AFL-CIO supported returning American fighters who served with the YPG). Two months ago he (working with allied unions and community organizations) organized a 500 strong picket line in Burlington, VT, against visiting union-buster Scott Walker. Below is his campaign announcement and his slate’s ten point program.

In solidarity with the sudan revolution

A call of solidarity from a comfortable distance may seem impotent against the violence of the repression being waged against the sudanese rebellion. And yet in our weakness, we cannot but, with words, express our desire to see the rebellion resist and create a world beyond that which up until recently seemed seemed to be a fated destiny.

Even in the face of so much terror being thrown against the uprising, there is an undoubted courage and beauty in this rebellion, in all rebellion.

These Women Provided Illegal Abortions Before Roe v. Wade. Will Activists Have to Go Underground Again?

from democracy now.

As Roe v. Wade faces unprecedented attacks across the country, we look at the history of a radical underground feminist organization called Jane that provided safe abortions for women despite the procedure being illegal. The story begins in 1969, when a group of women in Chicago set up a hotline to offer counseling and provide abortion services to women in need. To reach the underground feminist abortion service, all you had to do was call a phone number and ask for Jane. The group went on to provide at least 11,000 women with abortions before Roe was decided in 1973. In Part 2 of our discussion, we speak with two former members of Jane: Laura Kaplan and Alice Fox. Laura Kaplan is the author of “The Story of Jane: The Legendary Underground Feminist Abortion Service.”

Roz grew up in a working class-leftist household in New Jersey. Her mother was a union organizer in Lawrence, MA during the Great Depression. Her father ran for NJ State Senate as a member of the Socialist Party. Beat poet Allen Ginsberg was her sometimes babysitter.

MEXICO CITY — An American anarchist who went by the name John Galton was shot dead at his home in the Mexican resort of Acapulco, sending shivers through a tightknit anti-establishment community of expatriates that organizes events in the violence-torn retreat with seminars on topics such as how to make money via cryptocurrencies.

TOTW: What "Not Anarchists" Influence Your Anarchy?

Anarchists have never existed in a vacuum. We are a part of the world we live in as much as we might want to destroy that world. We interact with the (not anarchist) world in ways that both influence it and are influenced by it. While this is true on every level of day-today life, it is especially true in how we engage with writing and thinking from outside anarchist spheres.
