The past month in Hamilton saw two communique-worthy events without communiques. We celebrated March 15th day of action against brutality in the middle of the Juno awards ceremony and our buddy who was getting railroaded into a jail sentence got off after a crowd of supporters pressured the court.

From 325:

According to a report by ABC Mexico, anarchist prisoners Carlos, Amelie and Fallon were released March 13th, Amelie and Fallon were transferred directly to an immigration prison to be deported back to Canada. Given the condition of the place: restricted visits and lack of information, the situation of the companions was unclear until March 23 when they were deported.

Recall that the comrades were sentenced for an incendiary attack with molotovs against a Nissan dealership and the Ministry of Communication and Transportation in Mexico City.

The fire still burns

From The Tower

With the bitter cold days of winter slowly winding down, Hamilton's friendly neighbourhood anarchist space The Tower is making some big plans as we look forward to the upcoming months. In May we will be celebrating a year in our current location, and we are excited to announce that we just officially renewed our lease for another year.

On January 29 2015, a person in Hamilton who has been active in organizing against Line 9 and the Tar Sands opened their door to find a detective from the Hate Crimes and Extremism Unit of the Hamilton Police. This person is on bail from charges relating to the many blockades of Enbridge's Line 9 construction sites. They were placed under arrest for breach of bail under a flimsy pretense. They were held overnight and released the next day under a stricter bail.

For the sixth year in a row, anarchists in Southern Ontario held noise demos outside prisons in the area, to show our hatred of prisons and the world that creates them, to show solidarity with folks locked up, and to build our collective strength with a tradition of fun, rowdy demos. This year, we visited the Syl Apps Youth Detention Centre in Oakville and made the usual stop at the Barton Jail in Hamilton.

Public Grief and the Logic of War

The past week has seen two attacks in Canada against Canadian soldiers by Muslim men. In response, thousands of people filled the streets to wave flags and call for heightened surveillance, preventive arrests, and war in the middle east. The crowds are calling for a police state. It feels heavy, and we're stuck watching with dread as the crowds seem intent on re-enacting propaganda scenes from the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Except in Canada in 2014, instead of a torch the crowds are cheering on the progress of a dead soldier whose corpse was driven from Ottawa to Hamilton.
