This is a critical reading to “How nonviolence protects the State” by Peter Gelderloos. To go through Gelderloos’ takes i will expand on what i find are argumentative failures on his part. Even so, i will try and give in to his points anyway, accepting his analysis and requirements as correct, and see if nonviolence can be saved regardless. My take is that yes: nonviolence can survive Gelderloos’ critique, by means of accepting or rejecting his opinions the same.

So in a sense, change is the only constant: a comforting story for a world that is often disorienting. And yet, capitalism, as simultaneously an economic and technological system, goes through phases that might last more or less long and that create a sense of stability within them: the more things change, the more they stay the same (again, as we are told).

I’ve been working without my usual daily quotas and deadlines, for the first time in over three years, and spending a lot of time thinking — no doubt sometimes over-thinking — about the translation strategies I began to develop a decade ago, while puttering away at Proudhon’s journalism and correspondence.

Since I recognised myself an anarchist, I have always been an “idealist” for taking it to the Messianic, a “believer” of The Idea. I was fascinated (and continue to be fascinated) by all the stories and experiences that Anarchism has brought, fought for and defended in the name of a conviction that a more dignified Humanity is possible. I always liked texts with a speech that appealed to “preach the spark of consciousness that transforms the instinct of mutual help into the architecture of a society without masters, where bread and freedom are universal and inalienable rights” or which spoke of the “end of the exploitation of Man over Man” and the “emancipation of the people by their own people”. I believe that, from this interpretation, my logical development was that ego and personalism cannot take place in a universal project.

Yet, for many, the Spanish Anarchists are trapped in time and place, a Promethean eternity of reliving their noble defeat at Brunete.
