This week Bursts spoke with Kevin Tucker, anarcho-primitivist, author and publisher of Black & Green Review. We had a rather lengthy conversation, so we’ve split the conversation up. This is the first portion, in which Kevin talks about anarcho-primitivism, domestication, civilization, anthropology and the scientific method, human development, agriculture and more.

In the future episode you can hear his views about tribal-bro-ism in the white supremacist approach to historical misappropriation, upcoming issues of Black & Green Review, Collapse, Rewilding versus Revolution and more. Today’s episode premiers October 1st, which is the date of the #CatalanReferendum for independence in that northern region within the bounds of Spain. In the leadup, the Spanish government has violently repressed the efforts to hold this election and the news we’re seeing today is no different. If you’d like to hear a chat I had earlier this week with an English-speaking anarchist who has long resided in Catalunya about Catalan nationalism, autonomy, cultural differences between that region and central Spain, some history and some forecasts of where this referendum and repression may go (always critical of the State and Capital), check out our downloadable podcast.

Also, keep an ear out for an upcoming series of podcast miniepisode ‘s featuring William Budington and Bursts chatting about digital security and safer practices with our devices. We’ve got a couple coming out about practices with Burner Phones and strengths and weaknesses of wrangling with the Signal app for end to end encrypted texts from Open Whisper Systems.

October 19th Call for Solidarity

There has been a formal call for solidarity from antifascists around the south to oppose an appearance by the by now internationally infamous white supremacist Batman villan Richard Spencer. It has been officially confirmed that this piece of white bread is going to be spewing pseudo intellectual and only marginally intelligible xenophobic racism at University of Florida in Gainesville on October 19th, which is in just over 2 and a half weeks from now.

You can see the entire formal call for solidarity, plus some important context that includes recent history and what to be prepared for, at It’s Going Down.

You can get in touch if you want to endorse this call and are planning on being there in solidarity by emailing

Support Herman Bell!

“Black Panther Party political prisoner Herman Bell was viciously assaulted by guards at Great Meadow Correctional Facility (Comstock) on September 5, 2017. While being “escorted” by a guard back to his housing unit, a guard struck Herman, age 69, in the face causing his glasses to drop to the floor. He pushed Herman against the wall, Herman stumbled and fell to the ground. The guard then continued viciously hitting and kicking Herman. Very soon about 5 other guards arrived and joined in the violent attack, hitting and kicking Herman all over his body.

Herman Bell has now been charged with “assault on staff.” Defying common sense, they allege that Herman, for no apparent reason, slapped the guard escorting him. He did this, they claim, in a location out of the view of all inmates but in the presence of other guards. He is now in the Special Housing Unit (box) at Five Points Correctional Facility where he was transferred after the incident.

Herman Bell has not had a disciplinary violation in over 20 years. He had been scheduled to begin a three day family visit with his wife a few days after the incident, their first such visit in over 2 1/2 years. In addition he is to appear before the parole board, for the 8th time, in February 2018.

At this time, we are encouraging everyone to take the time to write to Herman or send him a get-well card, so that the authorities know we are concerned for Herman. Further requests for actions of support will be posted soon.

His new address is:
Herman Bell 79 C 0262
Five Points CF
6600 State Route 96
Caller Box 119
Romulus, N.Y. 14541

Friends and family are also encouraging supporters to email Commissioner Anthony Annucci, to let him know that folks are keeping tabs on Mr. Bell’s situation. Commissioner Annucci’s email address is:

Comrade Malik Washington

Comrade Malik, a tireless writer and organizer who’s been very active in exposing unsafe conditions at the Eastham Unit in Texas, is facing retaliation from prison staff, and is asking supporters to email the Texas Ombudsman to prevent any further action being taken against him. You can find out more information at Action Needed to Fight Retaliation at the Eastham Unit!

Support Shaka Shakur and Angaza Bahar

At the Wabash Valley Correctional Institute in Indiana, Shaka Shakur, who is a political prisoner, defended himself against mistreatment by guards, and another, Angaza Iman Bahar (Jimmy Jones), who helped alert the outside world to the situation, are both facing disciplinary charges.

Wabash Valley Correctional has been getting a reputation for “a culture of sadism [in which] guards take pride and find humor in their mistreatment of inmates, especially Black and New Afrikan inmates whom they expose to every kind of abuse and humiliation.” IDOC Watch are asking people to call in so the prison knows that they both have outside support.

It is urgent that the security of Shaka Shakur and Angaza Bahar be ensured, but the only way is through mass pressure from the outside. IDOC Watch asks that people call Wabash Valley warden Richard Brown at 812-398-5050 and IDOC Commissioner Robert E. Carter Jr. at 317-232-5711. You can also email IDOC officials at,,,, and

"Kevin talks about anarcho-primitivism, domestication, civilization, anthropology and the scientific method, human development, agriculture and more"

...if anyone bothers to listen to this, let us know if he says anything other than same old same old

WTF kind of new things do you want them to talk about?

What's new in egoism? What's new in nihilism? What's new in anarchism in general? Nothing's new, nor has anything fundamentally changed in 150 years.

What a fucking stupid comment.

OP here. Good point.

i can't bear to even think about listening to his bullshit. he hasn't said anything new in at least ten years. anti-civ green anarchism, represented through the one-hit wonder duo of KT and JZ, has outlived its own stagnation. it is long past the expiration date...

Sorry what are the expiry dates of ideas and theories? Just asking...

People of course have a quite short life span (you'll see what I'm talking about when you grow older), but ideas... until proven wrong they can live forever in people's minds. What Zerzan and Tucker are saying isn't original. Just repackaging of ideas seen previously, through Ellul, Illitch and even before.

JZ and KT without ever a mention of Layla AbdelRahim!? who takes a different perspective, even a more profound perspective regarding human behaviour, past and current, with her emphasis on 'human predatory mind-set.' The Final Straw have interviewed Layla yet do not raise her name nor her perspective with this interview of KT (and his fixation of 'man the hunter'). JZ acknowledges females, via gathering, appear to be more than equal in bringing home the calories, vitamins etc needed. Humans would need to be controlled fire specialists to consume flesh as and when 'needed' as flesh goes bad very quickly. Interesting that controlled fire is not even raised as a catalysing issue of human domination as no other species uses fire as we do. Controlled combustion has had and still has humongous consequences for the biodiversity. Humans are always looking for more ways of producing more and more energy. I don't even think Layla considers controlled combustion to be of any worthwhile consideration, which is staggering. In conclusion, there is a newer perspective regarding anarcho-primitivism.

"Humans are always looking for more ways of producing more and more energy." - please don't generalize!;

after all, aren't we-humans uniquely evolving by way of ritual ceremony as sacred; that the process of exposing and dispelling that subject-object illusion which conceptually separates living and dead is discreetly underway. (?) in conclusion, does the emphasis on identifying combustion-specialists / flesh-eaters as to-blame (for humongoulsly affecting biodiversity), distract one from confronting the disruptive imposition of the pervading linear-hierarchical systematic mindset or civil-paradigm as initiated by rogue deviants, thus instinctively collaborating with such moral deviance to the detriment of our ongoing circus?

Generally speaking aka typically speaking, humans are using more and more energy. That's that one sorted. Generally speaking aka typically speaking, humans are making more and more use of combustion. That's another point sorted. Humans are killing way more non-humans then ever before. Indeed, energy manufacture, energy consumption and the use of non-humans increase year on year typically speaking which possible, indeed most probably includes 'excuse human' as one of those consumers! Job done.

therefore we shouldn't have a fire on the commune ?
good luck!

There are consequences! Have your commune... and your fire... and the consequences... huge consequences!

yeah i gotta second the HT to Layla AR. i'm not really well read enough to summarize and compare but she has written some really interesting stuff. i used to go in for the KT/JZ stuff in the 00s and then (somewhat as a consequence) went on to learn about and from actual Indigenous people and one of the things it caused me to reflect on was how, well, civilized the whole obsession with 'wildness' and violence in that discourse is. if you're going to take a deep dive into prehistory you might as well go all the way and notice that carnivory is a relatively recent innovation, as we descend from tree-dwelling frugivores (hence, no doubt, the ubiquitous religious significance of trees?); that even the most 'primitive' peoples don't glorify killing but sincerely beg forgiveness of their prey (see the legacy of hunt as ceremony e.g. among ancient Israelites who apparently only really ate meat at festivals, evolving eventually into ritual slaughtering as we know it - im a bit of a religious studies nerd now if you couldn't tell!); that they do not consider the universe a place of random cruelty and violence (as the modern does) but on the contrary, of great order... there was something really a bit too gleeful in the (always male, as far as i saw) AP hunt culture. a lot of good things and sincerity i found in that scene but unfortunately also a lot of domesticated white males playing 'noble savage' in very fake, macho civilized ways that wouldn't be so out of place in some of what i read about pagan fascism - in fact i wonder and worry what some of them are up to now...

domestication survives in KT's celebration of war. derrick jensen wants us to revolt against civilization in total obedience to him. i hate to say it but there is still too much 'white dudes gonna white dude' type shit in this tendency for it to be of any interst to me.

WTF does race have to do with this? Why bring it up.?

If ur white you can't have an opinion cuz colonialism. Lol..

Well yeah at this point if you're "cis white" this means you'd better check your privilege coz you are responsible for all the past genocides and the oppression of women through the ages.

It's in your genes... you know? Once We find a way to cleanse White cis individuals like you, the patriachy and the heterosexist oppression will be over. We'll also need a State-sanctioned eugenics program to make sure that no cis Whites are ever born in the future. Forever.

Your alt-right shitheadery is exactly the whiteness I’m talking about. Whiteness isn’t genes or skin. It’s a political pact. It’s making everything about you all the time. It’s shitposts full of frothy flaming rage whenever that’s questioned. That’s what I’m talking about- what you’re doing right now.

Different commenter: Frothy, flaming, rage-filled, shitposts are part of whiteness now?! That's a bit reckless of you!

Even Pepe comes in different colors

I find it interesting that despite critiques of science from AP and green anarchist thinking that people such as KT are still down to idealize anthropology and treat it as some sacred field of academic research which is laying waste to all the bad in the world. Sure, a few bad apples like Chagnon but the good guys like Ferguson will always prevail. This whole interview was based upon dropping timelines and science rather than anything to really sink my teeth into that can get me feeling like there is some relevancy to what you're saying. You criticize egoism, but at least I don't have to have an egoistic critique of civilization rooted in anybodys perspective but my own. Stick to the zanie rewilding stuff, at least I can agree with being in the woods feeling good and have a laugh at the more nonsensical stuff.
