First Annual Jackson, Mississippi NYE Anti-Prison Noise Demo Report Back
With giant banners, booming bass drums and machine gun fire of a snare drum we gathered in front of the downtown Jackson jail/sheriff's office, where prisoners are held for up to a year, to condemn prison society and celebrate the new year with the prisoners. We started on the street pounding out rhythms from behind our 2 giant banners. The prisoners were flashing their cell lights on and off and whooping at us. We Climbed the stairs to the court yard where we were not 20 feet from the nearest cells, some of which had things like "Help me please, god help yourself" scrawled on the windows. Prisoners were waving, flicking the lights on and off and then started banging on windows with their fists, replying to the beats we laid down. We hung out for about 30 minutes and left before the cops could shut us down.
