General Discussion

This is just supposed to be a general catch-all discussion thread.

The first thing that I wanted to talk about was that the revolution is not an end in itself. I think that a lot of Anarchists, mostly young people, are solely interested in the theory awaiting the prospect of revolution. While it is quite romantic, a revolution could also turn out to be quite terrible. It seems to me that a revolution ought to be for something. I don't think that acts should be considered à la "l'art pour l'art" as ends in themselves. Acts seek to take agency over historical events seem like they ought to have some sort of ideological content with which to substantiate them. A political act need not be a Populist appeal to some particular variant of Anarchism, but, I fail to see the point of attempting to wage some form of "pure" protest that seeks only to substantiate itself as an act. I guess I just mean to point out that politics does differ from art, I guess.

That's all that I've really got on that.

You can either respond to this or just talk about whatever you want. That was just the first thing that I wanted to address.

There's a few scenes in the

There's a few scenes in the Andrei Tarkovsky film, Mirror, that are some of my favorite moments in all of Cinema. A poet recites over a series of collages. They really get at the kind of vital force involved with revolutionary acts. I also wonder if such an impetus isn't sort of Fascist, though.

This and the other post are me, by the way. I forgot to log back in again.

i must be the worst kind of

i must be the worst kind of sheepish follower or conformist, but all i would have needed to “believe” in revolution was one other person who was a true friend and who believed in some form of that as well. but that didn’t happen. i had to critique all my notions out of sour grapes, and abandon all my past aspirations, as i found no one to share them with in an arbitrary too short formative span of time. i can now claim to “know better” but i’m not any wiser. i wallow in disappointment. none of my past aspirations were my own, but choices presented to me, and i chose to get on with it, i never put my heart into anything. i failed at all my endeavors which were only alibis to keep appearances, and on with the next. it’s become an unescapable habit and routine and the only way i can imagine living.

Don't be too bummed out, anon

Don't be too bummed out, anon. There are bound to be plenty of people out there who share similar ideals or whatever. There's a philosopher who argues that Philosophy ends in disappointment which I have kind of been feeling as of late, but, I can't remember who they are. I don't really think that such notions are really the case, though. There's always something else to discover.

I kind of think that my own life hasn't really amounted to too much as well. I spent years playing music only to really be able to write in C and A and on studying philosophy to still be totally incapable of writing in such a manner that I deem to be satisfactory.

I think that the inquietude that drive inspires doesn't necessarily need to be percieved negatively though. It's good that people should all strive to do something more.

I would just keep at whatever it is that you care about doing and find the time to reflect upon life without falling way to anxiety. No one ever gets anywhere by obsessing over the future. It's best to consider all of the good things that you've done and that there are. I find that even a minimal attempt at appreciating experience really does make life a lot better.

I don't really have anything else to say, but, hope that that helps. Things will get better for you and you won't have to continue to cope with ennui. It gets to all of us. That's not much of a consolation, but, I do think that it is nice to know that there are other people out there who feel like you do. It's best, I think, to be hopeful. I've found that being somewhat diliberatly optimistic helps a lot more than you would expect. Just the slightest things can make all of the difference in the world. There's so much to life and the world around us. Why see it only negatively?

haha, as to your music, an

haha, as to your music, an easy cure to only being able to write in C and A is learning how to play guitar. pretty sure you won’t get out of playing in E as a beginner.

daydreamdays
I think that it's easier to

I think that it's easier to write in A than it is to write in E. I do play guitar. I had thought for the longest time that A and E were the same key and had somehow been playing in a somewhat atonal Japanese key that primarily uses wind instruments. Thinking that you should take a leaf from Surf music will do that to you.

The grass will grow just as surely as they'll break your hearts.

I've decided to just carry on and bring up another topic for this discussion. Has anyone read The Archaeology of Violence by Pierre Clastres? It's really good. If you buy a copy of it, I would get the new edition because the old edition cover's attempt at being poignant just comes off as being somewhat essentializing. I think that you can find the whole text online for free.

If anyone cares to respond to any of this, they can respond to my original post or this or just talk about whatever they want to. You can always just talk about whatever you want to and don't need my permission do anything at all, but, this is a general discussion thread, and, so, whatever you feel like talking about is in keeping with the thread. That's all that I had to go on about. I'll hear from you whenever.

Le Way
I believe that a potentiality

I believe that a potentiality for violence is a neccessary trait if one is to maintain ones own freedom from tyranny and enslavement. Yoù mentioned that you were a pacifist, does this mèan that you would turn the other cheek if a stranger struck you?

anon (not verified)
Not necessarily, but, I would

Not necessarily, but, I would argue that is is generally better to if you can. I do make some exceptions for self-defence, but, think that nonviolence should considered as a principle and not a precept.

I guess I see the utilization of violence as tyranny itself. My relationship to the whole thing is fairly complex. I don't think that Anarchists in the West need to utilize violent tactics in order to survive.

Le Way
I follow a spontaneous

I follow a spontaneous unpremeditated amoral eye for an eye rèsponse, its complicated, and like you, depends on many variants, self-defense, physical and cognitive condition of the perpetrator of the attack upon my being, yeah, avoid it if I can.
Do you go anon occasionally or did you forget to sign in?

I just forget to sign in. A

I just forget to sign in. A few anon posts are mine. I didn't mean to post them anonymously.

I feel like a strategy of refusal and evasion is best. I kind of like Frére Dupont's inclinations towards "non-work". It seems to be best to be able to be creative as opposed to being combattive both strategically and as it concerns one's own well-being. It's not that being combattive is purely negative, but, just simply that it is preferable not to need to be.

Le Way
True, but that sombre

True, but that sombre detached pall of monasticism and physical inertion, which I used to be into during my nihilist stage, is beyond me now. Maybe it was a prerequisite to the epiphàny which followed, but I went zen, not capitalized mirror-wiping morally guarded Zen, but the variety DT Suzuki mastered, the unguarded moment, the doctrine-less everyday holistically integrated to every facet of daily life zen. Becoming One with the Now. Trouble is, its inexplicable, it can only be attained.
This probably sounds like gobbledygook to a learned scholarly bookworm such as yourself, I myself am built upon book knowledge, it was formative at the time, I remembered the gems and discarded the dross, and now I am my own walking encyclepedia.

daydreamdays
Eh, I don't really claim to

Eh, I don't really claim to know too much. All that my academic apprehension indicates is that I have too much spare time on my hands.

I got into Zen for a while after I read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maitenance. I've read The Gateless Gate which is pretty cool. I've never commited myself to the spirituality, though. I'm not terribly spiritual. I should consider reading Suzuki. There's a great big world out there outside of Existentialism.

Le Way
Yeah agreed, Eastern

Yeah agreed, Eastern existentialism, like its Western conterpart, leaves voids in other related interactive social experiences. Sitting in a trance state may be good if one is doing life in solitary confinement.
Don't read Suzuki, it is for the existentialist dilettante, quaintĺy and exclusively liberating for only the few.

Oh, cool. I haven't been here for too long and so didn't know. I do plan on listening to the next one as I am curious about Nihilism. Does anyone know if the other Dupont has put anything out? I've only ever seen stuff from Frére Dupont. They say that there are two authors in Nihilist Communism.

Japanese Cinema

I am now opening this thread to a discussion on Japanese Cinema. Has anyone ever seen CW: Throw Away Your Books and Rally in the Streets? I thought that it was really good. Also, does anyone know if Terayama was an Anarchist? By my estimation, that is the only feature length Anarchist film that I can think of.

Broadcast is great! I have less than zero knowledge of electronic music and wish that I could make sound collages like them. You would probably like all of Rather Ripped if you like Incinerate, but, idk if that is where to start with Sonic Youth. They have a ton of great material.

This is unrelated to everything entirely, but, has anyone seen the video for George Harrison's Faster? His career really took a turn for the bizzare after All Things Must Pass.

You do talk to real people on the internet. I don't see why all of online discussion should just be people fucking with each other. I didn't say that you were a Fascist, though. It's not necessarily Fascist to have an opinion about George Harrison. No one knows who you are, anon. You don't have to defend yourself.

Wingnut Dishwashers' Union

I am now opening this thread to a discussion on good band names. The first one that I can think of is Wignut Dishwashers Union. There should be an apostrophe after the "s" in Dishwashers, though.

Let it Bloom by The Black Lips

I was sort of into this album when it came out but don't really know how I feel about the direction that the band took afterwards.

Anarchism without adjectives

In keeping with the discussion topics I have decided to open this forum to a discussion on Anarchism without adjectives. I like this theory. Granted, I've only read the Wikipedia page, but, it just seems like a good idea.

Also, how does everyone feel about the concept of "the movement"? I'm sure that there are bound to be critiques of that.

anon (not verified)
i like adjectives, they’re

i like adjectives, they’re pretty useful words, fun too (badum tss?)

recently there was a discussion of “hyphenated anarchism”, even the topic of a conference too (BASTARD i think)

but as senileoldtroll reminded me today, i’m not an anarchist, that means i can be carefree about adjectives and hyphens tagged onto anarchism

“the movement” is too vague to properly address, but some people try to mean something very specific with it, and some avoid using it.

daydreamdays
I think that the "movement"

I think that the "movement" can tend to be vaguely synonymous with the political program of the Anarchist Federation whom I rather like, but, do wonder if such things can be likened to some sort of "one, true, holy, Catholic and apostolic faith".

I do agree that there is a general movement of Anarchism, but, wonder, since the philosophy is so open, if it really can have any specific direction at any given point in time or should. I sort of like the notion of being swept up in some sort of grand historical project, but, kind of think that such notions are indicative of some sort of ideology or another. I feel like Anarchism should somehow be non-ideological, I guess.

anon (not verified)
“non-ideological” sounds like

“non-ideological” sounds like “objective rational unbiased” (which has its own philosophical and cultural baggage and trappings)

“anarchism” sounds like an ideology with a history

all in between those are values, impressions, ideas, preferences, urges, and desires that we can hold/feel at different times

like the notion of being swept up in some sort of grand historical project, or of being swept up in general (unless by a wave at the beach, but even that has its limits)

anon (not verified)
not at all. relations are

not at all. relations are all there are. the relations that make up earth, the universe are not governed by the human mind.

the model of reality is not reality. separations are merely conceptual. how many notions don’t exist outside of the human mind?

being non-ideological allows room back in for intuition, and ‘reading signals from the outside,’ from the living space all creatures share and is the PRIMARY organizing influence of life on this planet. our language stucture orients our beliefs away from treating space as more than a non-actor, non-participant in orchestrating, actualizing, and sustaining life (a continuum without beginning or ending) as an ongoing process we are situated within. the inhabitants and the habitat make up one dynamic.

what’s allowed to come into play without ideology is ‘and/both’ thinking, or ‘the logic of the inclusional third,’ taken over ‘either/or’ thinking. ‘either/or’ thinking leaves out negative causality. one can believe in capitalism, and endless growth as the head of a lumber company. BUT, nothing grew. what was once a forest has been transformed into bald earth. aka, there are externalities to every ideology. every single one.

anon (not verified)
wordy

wordy

see, i like “non-ideological” but fear that it might be a mere pretension of being “above the noise”

i like some of what you’re saying and it kinda makes sense

but my paranoid spidey sense kinda feels the trace of a scent, an aura on the UV spectrum that colors your words with traces of philosophical and ideological precepts.

not that that’s a big bad no-no that you must purify yourself from. precisely the point is that we can try to be clear-headed and not delusional, none of us are exempt or invulnerable to bullshit

I don't really mean that by

I don't really mean that by it, but, I ultimately can't quite express what I do mean by "non-ideological". I do agree with the general sentiment of what you're saying, though.

anon (not verified)
you know, i meant to say “i

you know, i meant to say “i don’t like feeling swept...”
but the meaning of the version with the omission still makes sense in relation to what was being said above it.

see, i might not like feeling helpless to things beyond my control, but it’s happening all the time

daydreamdays
I see what you mean. I did

I see what you mean. I did mean to imply that such notions pose a danger concerning agency. I'm still a little enchanted by collecitve euphoria, though. As much as I would be critical, I still kind of like that people can somehow come together to create a better world. Idrk what I'm really on about beyond that tbh.
