From Pramen
July 19, 2024
This summer a series of tragedies continues for the BUR anarchist movement. Two of our comrades from Ukraine - Roman Lehar and Ruslan Tereshchenko - died in battle. Both fought against imperial aggression since the beginning of a full-scale war, and Ruslan also fought in 2014. Wars and repressions are taking away more and more of our comrades. Their names will go down in the history of anarchism, but, unfortunately, our ranks continue to thin out in a maddened, self-devouring capitalist world, in which every revolutionary counts.
But life is complex and can be taken away not only by the hands of tyrants, but also by accident. So, the weekend before last, our old comrade, an anarchist from Belarus, Alexander Pustovitov, died in a traffic accident . In addition to his revolutionary identity, he, like each of us, had other aspects of life: he was a traveler, including a fondness of traveling by bicycle. Having gone on his latest cycling trip, he died in an accident with a car near Warsaw. Sasha and I were connected by the experience together of activism and revolutionary struggle, as well as warm friendly relations. Every revolutionary understands that one day she may die in the struggle, and Sasha’s “doomsday,” more than once, could have looked completely different, but life presents unexpectedly sharp turns. The accident did what years of repression and political aggression of our enemies did not achieve.
We mourn and honor the memory of those who died, and we will continue our common struggle for freedom and equality. Every person repressed and killed along this path will remain in history and in our hearts. Their contribution to the common cause will not go unnoticed and no one will be forgotten, nothing will be forgotten.

Two brief obituaries for Roman Lehar and Ruslan Tereshchenko, from the Resistance Committee's telegram page:
On June 09, 24, an anarchist Roman Legar was killed while performing a combat mission.
Roman's libertarian path was inextricably linked to the Revolutionary Action organization. At the beginning of the full-scale war, comrades from this organization joined an anti-authoritarian platoon. Roman was among them, and we knew him then as "Revny".
After the platoon disintegrated due to military bureaucracy, Roman joined the K12 unit in the Azov Brigade, wanting to be useful to the front. There, our friend got the call sign "Jesus" and was trained as an FPV drone operator.
Neither the hardships and privations of service nor the environment could break Roman, he remained true to his anarchist beliefs to the end and remained an open and cheerful comrade.
We would like to express our condolences and support to Roman's family and friends, as well as to his comrades in Revolutionary Action.
Roman Legar is forever in the ranks!
While we were waiting for the opportunity to tell you about Roma's death, his friend, fellow political activist and comrade-in-arms, anarchist Ruslan "Skrypal" (means The Violinist in Ukrainian) Tereshchenko, died in combat.
Ruslan was one of the few anarchists who realized the need to gain combat experience in 2014. He was one of the popularizers of combat training in anarchist circles. You could see him in the documentary about the anarchist underground in Kyiv by Popular Front.
After Roma's death, he tried to transfer to one of the units where a large group of our comrades serve. But, unfortunately, he did not have time to do so.
We would like to express our condolences and support to Ruslan's family and friends, as well as his comrades.
Ruslan Tereshchenko is forever in the ranks!

I ain't that surprised, since there's been a pretty big movement of "autonomous" Neonazi groups in Ukraine for a long time, starting with the "all-ukrainian" unions and more recently the Neonazi militias that could pass as somekind of "anarchistic" in some warped superficial notion of anarchism.
This further pushes Western anarchists to a discuss an ontology of anarchism, as the latitude to play around with the word -'til ow for a kind of social cred, or edgy social identity- ain't as lofty as it used to be. Same goes for the racist xenophobe riots in England, that look like the riots we had around a decade back. We need a more clear approach to defining anarchy within the current world, not like 100 years ago, as well, as you can see where a bad ontology can bring people to.
Sophie Scott-Brown for instance, despite her apparent appeal to normies, is at least going in that positive direction. Even if one does't agree with her approach here's a course to consider.

What does a western anarchist ontology have to do with someone in Ukraine describing themself as an anarchist and joining a fascist militia? Are you going to send the Ontology Police to arrest non-anarchists using the word?
Well it looks like neither

Well it looks like neither Ontology Police or Purity Hitmen were required to deal with this guy's bad ontology... Bad ontology caused his death, somehow.
But to answer your first question, that is relevant...If Western anarchists would have a clearer notion of what anarchy is about, or at least a more consistent narrative of anarchist agency in the current world, perhaps that'd save some people from getting fooled and falling for non-anarchist causes?

Yeah, I'm sure this person who had been in some level of combat for an entire decade was spending a lot of time reading what anarchists in the west had to say about the relationship between anarchism in the azov battalion, and ended up joining because we were just too ambiguous on the whole "fascists bad" thing.
I earnestly suggest you, and anyone who hasn't yet, read the "Looking Back on the Spanish War" essay from Orwell, then spend some time considering what a person who is fighting on the front lines of an active war in their home is most concerned about.

Ah fuck off. He wasent fighting for a decade. He wasent even from Ukraine. There’s no excuse for fighting with fascists and the state military. Do you not know anarchists history at all? What do you think the anarchists did during World War One? Furthermore, I fought on the front in Rojava so that who pitiful excuse about combat isn’t working for me. In fact I think we opened the door to people larping as anarchists while fighting in conflicts that have nothing to do with anarchism.

Yes I also don't understand why people are surprised. At least over here (Belgium/Netherlands) we have known all this since the start. Well maybe not that Roman and Ruslan in particular were going to join Azov (they hadn't done so yet) but people like Petrovichev had already been members of fascist groups for years before this invasion, and many others were associated with Korchynsky and the like.
Heck, I even left my then organization (Vrije Bond) all the way back in April 2022 exactly *because* of their decision to promote and finance these endeavours regardless of the fact that it was coming from national-anarchist and similar far-right circles.

anon (not verified) Mon, 08/05/2024 - 09:42
Anarchists help Ukraine military, Ukraine military helps Islamists in Mali attack Russians. Islamist jihad network who fund Mali operation also fund Islamist attempts to destroy Rojava. Anarchists help Rojava. US and Russian arms flowing every which way. Turkey helps both NATO military and Russian one. And this geopolitical mess doesn’t even include Israel-Gaza war. How is an anarchist to do anything but refuse to participate in this militarized nightmare? It’s so incredibly sad that so many free-thinking people are throwing themselves into these conflicts to die. I imagine the lack of any real global opposition to the capitalist-statist present we find ourselves in is why seemingly critical and thoughtful and loving anarchists are joining this craziness. I hope there’s an afterlife where these people can rest easy and not put on a uniform and hold little babies and puppy dogs and think everyone is beautiful.

I... don't think these people were very free-thiking if they threw themselves so easily as cannon-fodder for fascists. But it's sad that people -not just anarchists- are still getting lured into this same-old statist trick called "war".
And what is wrong with fleeing the war exactly? I've seen many non-Western refugees in Europe, and many of them were pretty anarchistic. They hated war, despotic regimes, and even sometimes national and religious bullshit and jsut wanted to live a good life with friends and families.

Not sure why the anarchists of Pramen left out, specially when they already mention that Roman was taking orders from those fascists.
Fascist entryism is fully a go. Almost like state entryism would naturally lead to this shit. Anarchy means nothing. Let's fucking go! Shoutout to all the western anarchists who helped normalize this.

Let's go to the front and die for fascists and states. It's the true anarchist way. If you disagree with me and don't lobby your congress person for more weapons for Ukraine you are nothing more than a Putinist stooge and everyone knows it. Real anarchists follow orders. Putinist anarchists think for themselves and oppose the State and fascists. Clear as mud.

You accuse me of believing that "the evil imperialism of Russia that is the only imperialism which is the only imperialism that exists."
Usually, on this site, I am arguing (against campists) that *U.S. imperialism* is NOT the "only imperialism that exists" (even if it is currently the single strongest imperialism). There are, I point out, other imperialisms, such as Russia and China, not to mention various sub-imperialist and authoritarian states, such as Iran. (And of course the colonial-settler state of Israel.) ALL these must be opposed (although maneuvering among them temporarily is allowed, as we supported Vietnam, Cuba, or the ANC against U.S. imperialism despite their aid and support from the imperialist Soviet Union).
The charge that I regard Russia as the only imperialism worth opposing is either a lie or a statement by someone who just makes things up. Again, the main issue here is not U.S. vs. Russian imperialism, but the self-determination of the Ukrainian people who are attacked by Russian imperialism.
Thanking you commander

because the state and the military aren't invincible? they destroy each other all the time
but large, exploitative, hierarchical organizations (hobbes and his leviathan) are created to force the surrounding human beings in to relationships of dominance by force and extract taxes, land, labour, etc. that's the whole point of power
after the more literal phases of conquest, comes the "social order", which stabilizes the process
then they tend to get greedy, delusional and inbred over time, which eventually destabilizes again
this creates openings for things like revolutions, or just collapse or whatever. nothing lasts forever! :)
Capital and the State are not

In reply to no the moral is... by Joe Below (not verified)
Capital and the State are not the same thing, but the State is always tethered to the general interests of Capital, even when it is claimed that it's the other way around (ie: "Communist" States). Furthermore there are both avowedly fascist and anti-fascist warriors fighting and dying shoulder-to-shoulder on both sides of this conflict, and both States claim to be fighting the good fight against the fascism or imperialism of the other.
A simple lesson could be taken that one aught never do anything that isn't in one's personal interests to do. Mutual Aid, Solidarity, putting an effort into autonomous organizing for collective self-empowerment against one's alienated condition, etc... ARE in your personal interests, Taking sides in a conflict between bourgeois States, or sacrificing yourself on the altar of the nation is not.

It’s so funny that someone like Wayne looks at this and goes, “well, I’m on the same side as the hyper violent global empire I enjoy citizenship in, its vassal state which is totally dependent on our arms industry, and a bunch of Nazis, including some Nazis who call themselves anarchists - but dang it, they’re all on the right side by accident, along with me and the other anarchists and liberals who are here on purpose.” It’s like who tf are you? Just go be a dem or join DSA and go vote for Kopmala and War Machine Walz. I don’t know why you’d bother call yourself a socialist or anarchist or anything like that. Straight up wrecker shit. People who have a hard on for piles of working class dead. It’s fucking sickening. Back in 2003 we said NO WAR BUT CLASS WAR and some of us have stuck by it. I think today’s Ukrainophiles would have full throatedly supported the war in Iraq because just like Putin now, the entire media was telling us that saddam was just like hitler and was definitely going to destroy the world if “we” didn’t stop him. Well I’ve got something else they can fully throat
