NPC herd!

Guest Topic of the Week - An NPC is a gaming term, which stands for "Non-Playable Character." Simply, it is a character in a game that the player does not control. All dialogue and actions are preset and described by the DM or programmer, depending if it is a table-top or video game. An NPC does not think for itself, has limited manners of communicating and acting.

This is where the infamous "NPC" meme comes from. A way to describe someone as unthinking, sort of following the flow in the most life-denying way possible. Sound familiar? Maybe your neighbor, coworker, family member, fellow activist?

It is hard to talk about this without feeling or sounding elitist, assuming that accusation bothers you. The framing sounds a lot like when people call others "sheep". It shouldn't be assumed the other thinks herself a non-NPC. Most people, maybe 99.99% of humans are NPC. To work, to rest, to watch the new game, do exactly as society wants of you, is a fact for most of us, even the radicals. Armchair or direct actionist, our radicalism simply seems to take the place of the "regular" hobbies of other folk. Most work, it seems, only follows what is a cause célèbre, anyways. Moving on as soon as the liberal media does.

It doesn't help that most activism is controlled opposition at best and good for the system at worst: a safety valve and possible way for the current system to appropriate its own criticism and course adjust.

For me, to overcome the NPC status is central to my anarchism: developing confidence, overcoming fear and intellectual laziness, creating capacity for real living. I feel a great example was Renzo Novatore and his circle. Or the Bonnot Gang. These are popular images of outlaw-anarchists, refusing to be workers or good, respectable anarchist-activists. I don't mean to imply individualist-anarchism is the only solution to the NPC status, but I do find the iconoclasm and "here and now" thinking to be a strong, intoxicating remedy.

As Novatore said, "The FREE SPIRITS, the ICONOCLASTS, all those who have finally discovered in “sin” and “crime” the new spring from which the highest synthesis of life gushes" (from the essay, "Cry of Rebellion."). Yet, he died. Is a project of a wild, expressive life resulting in death a better alternative to a boring, dredge-work life? I like to think so. Will I live up to that? It remains to be seen.

Questions

  1. As asked above, Is a project of a wild, expressive life resulting in death a better alternative to a boring, dredge-work life? How can one begin to answer that question?
  2. What philosophies feel relevant to overcoming NPC status, if any?
  3. How does NPC-ism manifest in your own life. Put another way, in what examples are you not (re-)claiming yourself?

The idea that 99.99% of people are unthinking NPC is Fascist logic.

Just because you don't like how others live their lives doesn't mean they have no agency. Not everyone is going to conform to your idea of a good life.

Instead of complaining about others get your own shit together, work out your issues with authority before trying to be that authority.

And lastly, probably your expectation that most of us are NPC means you don't ever notice when we act otherwise, you don't expect certain things and thus you don't see them. That doesn't mean they don't exist.

i enjoy your comment. not sure if i agree it is uniquely fascist logic though. im used to seeing it used as a right wing meme moreso than anything else, and seeing an anarchist use it filled me with the same sense i got in junior high when people would say something about "the jocks" or "the preppies" where im like, look im all for subcultural tribalism and the occasional street violence that comes with it, but you are whiny.

the logic here is so fundamentally flawed.

a player character doesn't think for itself. it is a character controlled by the player. an npc does not think for itself, it is a character controlled by the game master or programming code. the difference between an npc and a pc is that the player only interacts with the world as one. the player character also has no agency beyond the things the player makes it do. do you follow the story line? do you murder hobo everyone? the player character has no ability to keep from player from behaving as they will. that is the player's agency described through the character. it's a story, not real life or real people.

so the idea that of the eight point three BILLION people that exist only eight million are somehow self aware is a really uncharitable way to think about your fellow animals.

humans are animals and like all animals we have the same desires - to live and fuck and eat and sleep and be safe. that's why anarchism would work. for the most part people just want to get along with each other. but the society that we live in, under capitalism and the state, is like keeping animals in captivity. we're maladapted and traumatized, not without agency.

the implications of thinking of eight billion people as existing without agency is really vile and unhinged. that's some fascist shit.

you aren't special. you're just aware of the cage.

Homo Sapiens: I think, therefore, I am.

Homo Ludens: I *play*, therefore, I am.

*Don't hate the playa, hate da game.*

As NPC, I think a lot. All I can do is think. The rest is done for me. Fated. I am not an unthinking automaton. I am a *thinking* automaton. I love my fate. I imagine Sisyphus happy.

*I have scarcely begun to make you understand that I don't intend to play the game.*

I see the Matrix. I know Kung Fu. Deja vu.

Lot of rattled NPCs. Ironically nothing more human than asserting you’ve free will when it’s really just programming…

and there are always lots of people who think they're better than other people, more capable of understanding the truth, etc.

in this metric of yours, who is the programmer?

Biology. I think therefore I am not, as Descartes should have put it. Or God if you want, but jury's out if His throne is still or was ever occupied.

Anyway, no army has ever functioned on just playable characters, it's no diss. The Queen depends on worker ants, there's no Spartacus, Crixus, Oenomaus, Gannicus or Castus without their men, full simulacra warriors need NPCs.

yall obviously all gonna shit on thinking of others as npc, be more predictable, okay. but the poster has a good point in that it can be a good tool for considering oneself and ones actions. obviously you cant know someone else's mind from outside, so you could only speculate how and what they make decisions on. but many people in their self process may benefit from confronting their own assumed or habituated patterns. isn't this indeed part of what being/becoming yourself means? its a lifelong practice and its always fine to say "huhm i would rather act differently next time"

not to get into the oedipalizing copium risks of just a constant self referential victim psych narrative, thats another thing

the forums will be back when we do a drupal update. sometime before the end of the year.

write down your notes on all the awesomeness that you will add to forums when they're back.

Make that 100%. NPC or not, we will still think, or at least you thought you were thinking for yourself. Maybe you just thought you did when everything just happened because of a prior cause. A human is no different than the agency of a single atom, it just follows its rule, and it doesn't even know what the rule is.

When everyone is an NPC, what is the point of thinking you're an NPC, a puppet that thinks it's free, or a puppet that fights the system? I just want to play my best move.
