POPPING THE BUBBLE
Montreal Anarchist Bookfair 2026
A lot has changed in the 27 years since the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair began. As the scale and scope of our collective struggle has shifted, so too have our global practices of resistance, care, and collective survival.
This year’s theme, Popping the Bubble, is about breaking with the insularity of anarchist subculture and the political isolation that keeps movements small, fragmented, and disconnected from one another, and which end up reproducing the very exclusions we seek to challenge.
We ask:
- What becomes possible when we begin from connection rather than separation?
- What are we building that people would want to belong to?
- Who is missing from our spaces and why?
There are far more people already practising solidarity than traditional political spaces often recognize: through care work and mutual aid, art, teaching, basic survival, and everyday acts of interdependence. These practices are what this year’s bookfair seeks to connect with and learn from.
Popping the Bubble is an invitation to look honestly at how we organize as anarchists, to strengthen our accountability, and to build spaces grounded in care. It is a call to orient ourselves toward a shared struggle across borders, migrations, and histories of colonization, and to value the caregivers, workers, migrants, disabled people, elders, neighbours, organizers, and activists who sustain our movements in visible and invisible ways. Let us keep finding each other beyond all the bubbles we inherit and the ones we learn to unmake.

The Montreal Anarchist Bookfair organizing collective acknowledges that we are on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka. The Kanien’kehá:ka are the keepers of the Eastern Door of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The island called “Montreal” is known as Tiotia:ke in the language of the Kanien’kehá:ka, and it has historically been a meeting place for other Indigenous nations, including the Algonquin peoples. The Anarchist Bookfair collective believes it’s not enough just to acknowledge the keepers of this land. We encourage everyone participating in the Bookfair to get informed and educated, and to actively resist colonialism and neo-colonialism in the many forms it takes, and in the diversity of forms that resistance can take too.

No that was the Constellation of evil anti-maskers that keep spreading one or many of the Covid variants to our Community and probably tabling Jordan Peterson by now or something. We take care of Our People by forcing everyone to a mask, or else.
