My above comment wasn't meant to imply starting from a place of no trust or with the attitude of being unwilling or unable to trust.
In public meetings, or at the beginning of a public project, I think it best to err on the side of giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. I mean unless someone is clearly a cop. (Like in uniform)

My quibble with the phrase "what would it take for me to trust this person" is more about *after* I pick up clues, feelings, hints that a person may not be on the up & up. Of course I need to be aware of racism, classism, etc. because that is always a thing to keep in mind and check myself on.

anon 22:07 said it well, trust ourselves but keep in mind that we aren't always right in our assessments of others. For myself, I have found that listening to my gut gives me some information but doesn't give all the information. so, lol, trust but verify, I guess.
