Nah I think you're right about being over-reliant. I think it gets a bit 'old man yells at cloud' when someone decries technology in general - and it is a bit easy to say 'smartphone bad'. However at the same time our relations to (and through) technology should always be eyed critically and with suspicion - as you suggest yourself.
I think the problem is that in urban environments people's relationships are being atomised; we're more productive if our social desires can be sated remotely. All that unecessary travelling and having fun could be spent making more money!
