An atheist Jew that I know once pointed out the disadvantage of being God's chosen people and the horrible history of suffering that came with it. He said after the first thousand years that the Jews begged God to chose some other people, but then He choose them again. After two thousand years, they begged God again to choose some other people to be his chosen people, but God chose them again, and they were doomed to still more suffering. As he put it it appears that Jews are doomed to suffer as God's chosen people no matter what. Do we American really understand what it would mean, and what would happen to us if we if we really became God's chosen people.
