Claude Pelletier, a French anarchist living in exile in New York, proposed atercratie as another word for anarchy in the 1870s, at roughly the same time that anarchism began to be used generally. So when I was first thinking about different ways that the emergence of an anarchistic ideology might have played out, it was a logical term to play around with. There were a lot of similar terms coined in the 19th century, which didn't catch on, but might have, under other circumstances, served as a label for an emerging libertarian movement.
