I was going to read Sex at Dawn but from its reviews I knew it would swing too far towards the blanket comparison of primitive pre-industrial humans to bonobos on viagra and meth. Western methodology in observing and comparing social relationships and driving values just can't escape the modern hyperactivity that capitalism, the work/party ethic and propaganda taint the observations. Getting food and water was actually the most important occupation, sex came in third amongst our ancestors because it had a down side, it produced more mouths to feed, and wasted energy that could be better spent running down and spearing a fat pig to roast around the fire.
I prefer Jared Diamond type of anthropology, focusing around food and its profound influence upon evolution.
