i found this book somewhat interesting, but the author has a bunch of strange characterizations of contemporary anarchists. at one point i said -- out loud -- "that's bullshit; i don't know any anarchists like that!" but of course she's discussing an academic/activist milieu on the east coast of north america, where the leftist/academic/activist strands stand mighty and proud. ultimately the book is just unsatisfying, a promise unfulfilled. i couldn't quite put my finger on why it bothered me in so many places... but i think i know at least part of the problem, which is her own background. her trajectory is yet another example of how the academy totally fucks up what might have started out as an authentically radical personal project and turned it into a whole bunch of bullshit...
