Harriet Ruth Ward passed away on July 14th. We were bound to her by a long-standing relationship of friendship and collaboration; together with her partner, Colin Ward (1924-2010), she was a fundamental presence and reference for our cultural activities. Born in 1930 to Dora Black, a feminist and socialist author and militant, and Griffin Barry, an American journalist to whom she would dedicate an extraordinary memoir (A Man of Small Importance: My Father Griffin Barry, Dormouse Books, 2003), Harriet grew up in the progressive Beacon Hill school founded by her mother and Bertrand Russell, then husband and wife. She later devoted herself to teaching, applying in practice the innovative ideas about education developed with Colin. Funeral services were held in Ipswich on July 18, 2024; we would like to express our condolences to her sons Ben, Barney and Tom, family and friends. Until the end, Harriet was one of the most solid nodes in our international network, always ready to share contacts, materials and information with enthusiasm, friendliness and accuracy. We will miss you Harriet!

Here you can see a recent account of hers about the the Venezia '84 International Anarchist Gathering that we collected in July 2019: https://centrostudilibertari.it/it/node/836

So many articles about Colin Ward's life & work yet this is the first one I've seen about Harriet—& as if to prove the point, it's tagged with Colin's name but not her own. I wonder what she made of anarchafeminism.
