no ANews linkage? I GUESS WE SUCK.

From It's Going Down

About a year ago, we announced a hiatus on this project. Due to an outpouring of support, we pushed ourselves to continue, and over the last year, we’re proud of the interviews and roundups we’ve been able to produce.

But as events in the United States have continued to escalate and conditions have grown more dire, it’s clear that IGD does not have the capacity to meet the moment as a hub for grassroots reporting and journalism. In the face of this reality, we feel its important to be clear about our inability to continue, in the hopes that more people can push themselves to build and grow media projects and platforms.

We should all have a sober and clear-eyed view of what is happening. The current administration is attempting to consolidate extreme authoritarian power. People are being silenced and working-class people are being attacked. A police state is being constructed. Conditions are worsening. Inflation and prices are exploding and the entire country feels like it is slipping into dictatorship and economic collapse, as most people struggle to put food on the table.

While this reality is bleak, we are excited about the flood of new media projects taking off and reporting from the ground level and covering evolving social movements. We want to take a moment to shout out some of these projects and encourage you to support and follow them:

As corporations and the State consolidate news into fewer hands and the far-Right pushes to silence those who speak out, the need for dynamic and vibrant grassroots media that amplifies working-class voices and gives a platform to social movements is needed now more than ever. We hope those that enjoyed IGD over the years can help in constructing new infrastructure that can help meet our present moment.

Imagine writing the sentence "a police state is being constructed" in an obscure leftist digi-rag TWENTY THREE YEARS after the passing of the Patriot Act.

The US government was doing extrajudicial killings before IGD was ever discussed in a Brooklyn Starbucks the first meeting.

Good riddance! Would love to see an audit of where all those Patreon bucks went (many soy lattes).

Damn, that's crazy. RiP to IGD. Does the new internet still have a niche for counterinfo? Or is the whole point to break out of a niche and have a viral idea? So many unanswered questions. "Bleak" is a good descriptor.

Was IGD really counterinfo? When a site enforces a dogmatic editorial line and doesn't allow commenting I don't see how where's the "counter" part. For sure there could be more indy forums. Kolektiva is a thing... even if flooded with liberals and your usual coding techies crowd bragging about their 8-bit dungeon crawler games written in Rust coz it's so edgy.

Anews is on that eternal return time prolly. You'd need a time machine or something, to truly defeat it (lol). For now I'm very glad it's here. This is a very different project than IGD but it's also worth noting that both Anews and IGD were all in a general ferment of interest in anarchism when IGD launched.

....ahem, and therefore it all should be taken respectfully, at least from me. And I don't know what the commenter above intended with their reference to starting things in a Brooklyn Starbucks (cool flex, are you trollbaiting or something?), but what I'd rather highlight is how they provided a great source of transmission for news from Mexico and Canada to a US audience.

The point is not that some cool people had a cool website but that they have an archive of radical statements or reportbacks, "news"--whatever--which amounts to a legacy in its own way. IGD closing is a victory for no one but as their statement alludes to, there are active media projects and like-minded people to be found out there, which is the silver-lining.

Would love to hear more about why you don’t feel like you have the resources to continue in this moment?
