Justice, Primitive and Modern by Bob Black

From A Beautiful Resistance by Ian Blumberg-Enge

Review by Ian Blumberg Enge

“The voice of honest indignation is the voice of God.”

-William Blake

“There are words that fit in the mouth only after all the teeth have been broken out.” This is how the legendary Ed Lawrence opens his preface to Bob Black’s essay collection The Abolition of Work, it’s the perfect poetic summation of Bob’s approach to his intellectual enemies, and this latest offering is no different.

For Bob, writing is play, “productive play” to use his amazing phrase, but he puts in the work. He went to law school and, for the most part, made his living doing legal research. This clearly had an impact on Bob’s perfectly constructed arguments, but it also gave him a unique insight into an area many anarchists know little about, and almost avoid as if fearing some supernatural contagion – law and criminal justice.

Bob’s Defacing the Currency contains some great articles on crime and jury nullification. His book Friendly Fire contains a 33-page transcript of a deposition he sat for during a legal dispute with an employer. Bob spends most of the 33 pages arguing with the attorney about whether he can legally set his briefcase standing upright on the table, a must-read before your next interaction with any attorney.

Bob’s latest book, Justice, Primitive and Modern, put out in 2022 by Nine-Banded Books makes his fullest critique of western justice yet, not just its process but its very definition. As Bob points out in the intro, skeptics of anarchism rightly critique its lack of clear thought on dispute resolution. Bob is a realist, utopianism, he says, is always reactionary, and he knows that disputes of the kind we deal with every day in modern state capitalism will plague anarchist societies as well. The question is, how do anarchist values translate to this process?

Bob uses a close study of various non state cultures to contrast forms of dispute resolution that actually benefit the victims of crimes, and the communities they live in, with western justice, which often destroys communities and disregards victims in favor of what most benefits state hegemony. A form of justice that doesn’t exist to punish rule-breakers doesn’t have innocent victims, like people who did long stints for growing weed to get out and find it legalized, or people spending life in prison who were simply wrongly accused.

Bob’s next important point is that any form of real dispute resolution must be voluntary. For both parties to be happy, for the dispute to actually be resolved and the community healed, they both have to agree to be there. This gives us an interesting metric for community because disputes are usually only truly resolved when both parties have a complex web of social connections motivating them to be there. You can’t have justice for communities in a system enforced by state violence, whether that state is socialist or fascist or any other flavor, only anarchism offers such a possibility.

This book will make you rethink your definition of justice and make you realize how many of the people claiming to be your leftist comrades are just as law-and-order-bloodthirsty as any conservative given the right triggers. It will also validate your commitment to anarchism as the most humane system of social organization ever dreamed up. And as a plus, like the rest of Bob’s work, it is an extremely fun and funny read.

Ian Blumberg-Enge is a model agnostic anarchist, writer, and utopian kook. His work is focused on the intersection of mysticism and anarchism. He is co-author, with Peter J. Carrol, of Interview with a Wizard, published by Mandrake of Oxford.

This is a nice little write up. I’m hoping more and more up and coming radicals avoid the likes of Graeber and get straight to Bob and the other post @radicals.

BB’s ideas will endure well beyond the milieu that he helped create. It will soon be history. Bob’s ideas on the other hand(along with Wolfi and Peter) will probably help set up the better ideas of tomorrow.

Don't mistake the existence of good takes (imo and iyo) with their inevitable spread. people are different. presumably there will always be some who like the writings of wolfi, black, etc, but there will also be a large crowd who condemns and either doesn't want to overlook certain of their actions/statements, or finds them more egregious than others do. without dismissing those choices through my phrasing-- it seems that some people make their judgements more intersubjectively ie through normative group digestion and consensus formation, and some make them personally, thru individual reflection. neither of these is preferable: any judgement of any style fundamentally involves embracing some kind of bias, and emphasizing and deemphasizing some info. But it does seem like people favor one of the other tactic. like i see with zionists on the greater internet, anyone who claims to be on the side of objective truth is simply demonstrating themself as a fool.
i think the personal-or-group breakdown has a lot to do with whether a person tends to nihilism/egoism or "social anarchist"

The condemnations of BB come from a very specific marginal discourse that has little to no relevancy any more. For new readers of BB they are increasingly going to have no connection with the legacy milieu. The whole snitch jacketing thing by leftists has always been a misappropriation of what I call gangster morality anyway. It's basically these mostly huwhite punk or punk adjacent scenesters who use the language of the ghetto in ways they have no business doing. Calling the cops in and of itself is not a bad thing and using them as a means of revenge should be seen as a purely neutral thing.

With the Wolfi and Peter thing, their cancelation largely reflects times of outrage and anti-sexual neopuritanism. If we EVER make it to another bohemian radical generation/epoch where hedonistic radicalism is in again I GUARANTEE you the views of those 2 will be looked at a in different light.

My issue is not that these 3 fine thinkers have haters, it's how amplified that hate is for various reasons. A new epoch with new thinkers in search of new upstream ideas will not care about those sins in the way the current dying milieu does. The idea spread of post-left anarchists/anarchs is not inevitable but I see trends in that direction via certain radical metamodern trends that are revisiting people and things like The Goodman Bros communitas and other adjacent ideas. I've already seen interest in people like Kacszinsky and Ellul from this liminal space. BB and others might not be far behind.

dear lil' ziggles, having a hard time with logic again, let me help you ... "snitch jacketing" is when you falsely accuse someone, whereas your proxy-daddy Bob cheerfully admits that he used the cops as tools of retaliation in a petty dispute about crashing on a couch while being a bad houseguest. do you see the difference? oh it's ok, definitions are tricky sometimes! don't beat yourself up about it, just do better, k?

SirEinzige Fri, 01/24/2025 - 10:09

In reply to by lumpy (not verified)

Using cops as a tool of retaliation is not necessarily snitching and Bob more then explained the rationale. Tell me a reason that is not moral in nature why you should not use cops as a tool of revenge?

And yes, a raging leftarded doped up anti-semitic muslim got offended by his views on Islam. Being a supposedly bad house guest of said person does not warrant you having a gun pulled on you unless you pull some initial threat which Bob did not do. He also wasn't forcing him to have a place to crash for the night.

SirEinzige Fri, 01/24/2025 - 10:15

that the gangster moralistic nature of the term snitch tends to lend itself to jacketing even in the source underclass communities. You have a lot of toxic thug types who use that as a term of control. It's not language that pro-anarchy people should even be using to be honest. It's an actual example of linguistic cultural appropriation with toxic controlling effects. The use of the language by huwhite punk types is just pure cringe.

How can you spend so much time in anarchist spaces (obviously entirely online) and still be such a bootlicking, edgelord shitass?

Here you are trying to justify snitching. Snitching for fuckssake! Add that to all the other edgey positions you've taken over the years. Why even bother with anarchist circles, Ziggles? There must be an edgelord subcultural dweeb online space for you somewhere where you can all stroke your dingdongs and "well ackshually" each other into orgasmic puddles. Find it, you must. Fuck off to there, you should. Mmay?

If we are talking about something obvious like tattletaling in the service of and belief in law than that's a pretty non controversial position to be against in the context of pro-anarchy positions. Problem is the snitch concept and term entails a LOT more than that. What it essentially amounts to is a makeshift honour behavioural structure that, again, exists in the context of sublegal subsocietal gangster morality. It's a term that is made to keep people in line and outside of their main interests in quite often grey and black market contexts.

Why don't you go and do what you do best and continue to poison yourself with alcohol you intellectual neverwas.

...relates to 2 or more people who commit a crime together, get caught, and betray one another in exchange for leniency from law enforcement.

BB did NOT "betray" whatshisname. In fact, fuck whatshisname. Waves a gun around in BBs face just bc BB criticized Islam?

Man, fuck that guy.

Btw, the whole... upper-middle class white anarchist trope of appropriating "hood" language is abnormally cringe. Especially when you consider that the vast majority of *actual* real-life gangsters would utterly FAIL the "anti-oppression" test... People know this, right??

SirEinzige Sat, 01/25/2025 - 22:02

The other funny fact is you have gangsters like Charleston White who will not hesitate to use the cops to get one over on his enemies. These dumbass anarchists just don’t know how to be good practical egoists against their enemies.

I’m very critical of the contemporary leftarded idea of cultural appropriation but there’s such a thing as bad cultural appropriation and punkass bitches using ghetto lowbrow language like snitches get stitches is, as you said, cringe as fuck.

It's what most normal people think of snitching as. You're the one that is erroneously expanding the definition of a snitch by not controlling for motivations.

An example of snitching = what the Green Scare defendents (with some exceptions) did to one another, i.e: they betrayed each other.

An example that is NOT snitching = calling the cops on my upstairs landlord when he gets drunk and starts smashing everything in his space and beat the shit out of his wife.

Wtf does "anarchist morality" expect me to do in the above situation? A fucking banner-drop or something?

as a big fan of anarchy101.org, i don't think that reply is super helpful.

i think that calling the cops can be (very rarely, obviously) the best of a lot of fucked up options, but in the case of domestic violence, i would try really hard to talk to the survivor/victim first to see if the cops would make things worse for her. because we know they do that too...
sometimes getting anonymous friends to beat up abusers is a better tactic.

gotta gauge what is best on specific situations, not make grandstandy comments in online forums to strangers.

if it was generally understood that anarchists will call the cops "as a tool" of any kind, for any putative reason, but especially "revenge," it would be foolish to associate with them at all. that is how i have treated everyone i have met in my life who is willing to call the cops: untrustworthy. which, to be fair, certainly seems to be true of you, from what i've seen

anonymous (not verified) Fri, 01/24/2025 - 11:35

scare quoted "revenge" because i cant tell what the claim to revenge was from what is described here. the guy pulled a gun on him so he called the cops for revenge? revenge for what? feeling scared? seems more like he wanted protection but whatever

SirEinzige Sat, 01/25/2025 - 18:39

In reply to by anonymous (not verified)

How is calling the cops as such for any particular reason linked to untrustworthiness? And trust me the feeling is mutual in regards to not associating with your type and the reasons are well beyond trust.

anonymous (not verified) Sun, 01/26/2025 - 09:23

In reply to by SirEinzige

calling the cops brings the largely arbitrary force of the state to bear on any situation whereas i prefer dealing with people who i can expect not to do that so that i can have some degree of confidence that i am dealing with them as an individual (or small group, whatever) and not as an adjunct to the police force and bureaucracy. if i think a person might call the cops if i make them mad or scared, or on a whim, or to put themselves in a position to take something from me, or for any reason, then i know that i'm never really dealing with just them; i'm dealing with the threat of a much larger force with the capacity to end, capture, or endlessly complicate my life. i feel the same way about organized crime, larger gangs, etc

not sure what you mean by my "type" but sure, fine with me. have fun fantasizing about being a kiddy diddler and calling the cops on your enemies or whatever

SirEinzige Sun, 01/26/2025 - 10:23

In reply to by anonymous (not verified)

There are plenty of normies who broadly believe in the law who you don't have to worry about calling the cops on you unless they're the Karenical cunt types. In terms of the Black situation, Hogshire was someone who was marked for revenge. Unless you do something really bad to a fellow anarchist then your simply being paranoid. What's to say they won't do worse then call the cops if you really wrong them such as kill you.

anonymous (not verified) Sun, 01/12/2025 - 18:26

This book was decent. One major critique I’d have is that he doesn’t really go into conflict resolution amongst anarchists. He talks about a few primitive anarchist societies, talks about courts implementing restorative justice, but never mentions how current anarchists do restorative justice amongst themselves. This might show Bobs disconnect with the anarchist milieu, or his confusion about how the state has co-opted different conceptions.

I wish this book went into critiques on anarchists having accountability meetings calling them “restorative justice.”

This book is far more for liberals and leftists who believe in things like “a nicer court system.”

I have no intention of purchasing a Swiss chair. The milieu on the other hand shows all the signs of a dying phenomena. Most emerging radical discourse is coming from people that are terminally online not from people in the milieu.

The current dying milieu was born from things like 50s hipsterism and the beats as well as the lettrists across the pond. It came out of an emerging post-ww2 context. The same will be true of the new radical offshoots once this current world dies and the new one is born. It can't happen fast enough.

Once this new radical world is born they will look for the old stuff that was good and the good stuff is very few and far between. Bob Black is part of the good stuff.

The mammalian species, named after the mammary glands they possess with which they feed their newborn infants, possess a unique relationship with their offspring. This intimate suckling of highly nutritious milk from the mothers breasts continues into adulthood, and still induces rapture and often stimulates the obsessive desire to reproduce and continue this sucking tendency during the sexual act. The species become illogical during mating and it's best not to approach them with a gun when they are engaged, as primeval rivalry instincts and brutish feelings of jealousy course through their animal hearts, and self-defensive reflexes may be triggered.

Another part of the good is Jünger. His musings on this point recall the contemporary experience of social media and “cancel culture,” where any who dares question whatever the current consensus happens to be runs the risk of being “cancelled,” or subjected to torrents of abuse and baseless accusation. So too the refusal to join in the cacophony of outrage and popular demonstrations of “solidarity” that dominate social media. Non-participation quickly renders one ideologically suspect, for Non-participation is one of the attitudes that unsettles the Leviathan.

One of the most disturbing horrors amongst the herding species on Earth is their practise of ganging up against radical members of their population who think laterally about the problems arising from the inevitable hierarchies that arise amongst herds of all species because of physical strength and numbers of supporters, one of the unfortunate negative outcomes of democracy. These mostly unselfish individualists are ironically only thinking of the betterment of all of the population with a system which wishes to decentralize the power from one central State authority and distribute it equitably amongst all of the species, thus preventing greed and corruption from gaining a monopoly and causing the extinction and demise of many other weaker inhabitants of Earth. Unfortunately, these individualist outcasts become the scapegoats, and are excluded after being tormented, tortured and ridiculed by the cruel brutal mob mentality of the conforming herd members, whose socalled bravery only shows its face when in large numbers against solitary outnumbered free thinkers.

here's the thing, if cancel culture is so powerful and ubiquitous how are we hearing about new work (sorry, play) from Black?

that's correct, it isn't. sure, some no longer post online, but all those canceled persons are still walking around in real life.

calling pointing out harmful actions a person has done as 'cancel culture' is mostly a way to belittle and denigrate anyone speaking out about the chronic bad behavior of particular persons.

but, as Black's case shows, it's complicated. everyone knows about the snitching yet Black has continued to write usually excellent essays and screeds and a lot of us still read & recommend his writings.

it would be so helpful if people who called themselves anarchists didn't just swallow whole the thoughts and tropes and language of the right/maga boys online. you seem to be looking for the most radical takes but are ingesting the mindsets of online chuds.

It’s not so much powerful and ubiquitous as it is corrosive. Its effect are very much soft but powerful.

It’s also not just chuds and incels bringing attention to these problems. Clementine Morgan, who’s very much a former milieu leftist(and still leftist overall) has talked about the deleterious effects of it and how it’s reached all the way into AA meetings. It’s an inherently self flagellating process that comes from the worst of leftism(puritanism Maoism ect)

In regards to Black, if you so much as bring him up in any positive way you are going to invite derision from certain types of people. Same goes for the likes of Landstreicher and Bey.

CC is especially problematic if there’s not even agreement on whether the things done are even bad or not. In regards to the 3 contentious thinkers I’ve mentioned, I personally don’t see any issue for cancelling. At the end of the day, these are subjective judgements and there should not be an officially assumed wrong unless there’s is clear cross personal agreement which there is not for either of these 3.
