From London Anarchist Bookfair
We are very excited to announce that this year’s London Anarchist Bookfair will be in the Waterloo Graffiti Tunnel!
An anonymous supporter arranged this incredible venue for us.
You can expect all the radical political booksellers, campaigns, workshops, discussions, food, and music of past years, but this time, even bigger and better.
We want to explode anarchism out into the wider consciousness. In such dark and dangerous times anarchism, the beautiful idea, is more important and powerful than ever.
Anarchism?
One of the cool things about anarchism (that also makes it tricky to define) is that it has different interpretations, it has a certain fluidity. Pretty much everyone agrees though that practicing anarchy is about trying to minimise coercion, domination and hierarchy in the world. Capitalism and the state (made up of the government, courts, police etc.) are seen as systems that fundamentally maintain such domination, and anarchists hate that shit. Anarchists also fight against all forms of inequality and oppression in society, such as sexism, racism, ableism and homophobia.
Many anarchists like to talk about anarchy as constantly evolving, with no fixed end goal, more like a continual striving for emancipation. A journey not a destination.
History
The first London Bookfair was held at the autonomy centre in Wapping back in December 1981. Half a dozen anarchist publishers spread out their wares, and when hardly anyone turned up they played a pool tournament. It was a nice time and everyone said: “let’s do it again next year”. So they did.
It became a regular event, growing year on year and inspiring dozens of bookfairs across the UK and around the world. The London bookfair attracts thousands of attendees, with hundreds of stalls, workshops, discussions and countless conversations and connections.
In recent years the Anarchist Bookfair in London has been hosted at:
2023 – Richmix – Freedom – LARC – Whitechapel 41st Anarchist Bookfair. ARCHIVE
2022 – Bishopsgate Institute – Freedom – Whitechapel Gallery – Toynbee Hall
2021 – Conway Hall & Red Lion Square Gardens
2020 – Online (This was due to due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. This was world’s largest Digital Bookfair.)
Childcare
The bookfair will once again be providing childcare through out the day with qualified staff and a schedule of events.
This will be provided for free.
