From antimilitarismus by Alexander Ametistov. Translated from Russian by a friend of Anarchist News.
We are publishing a translation of an article criticizing pseudo-anarchists who call for support of participation in the war on the side of the Ukrainian state. It was published in the German anarchist anti-militarist newspaper Graswurzelrevolution.
Volunteering for war in the name of the nation and democracy? The growing rift among anarchists over the question of war.
A text that has been circulating online since November clearly demonstrates just how deep the chasm has grown between people, organizations, and media outlets that call themselves “anarchist.” “On the Suppression of Eastern European Voices at Anarchist Events in the EU,” reads the title of a complaint drafted by “Solidarity Collectives” and signed by numerous groups, collectives, and individuals. The list of signatories to the English-language version is longer and includes, among others, FAU Frankfurt, the French CNTF, and well-known authors such as Peter Gelderloos and Philipp Kellermann.
The text laments that the anarchist community accuses those who voluntarily take up arms to fight in the war of “supporting the war.” The following conclusions are drawn from this: in recent years, many organizations and groups have emerged within the anarchist community that either actively exclude of block the participation of “Solidarity Collectives,” AChK-Belarus, and many other anarchist and anti-authoritarian organizations from public events. In addition, numerous “statements” have been published condemning the work of these groups and their support for the Ukrainian resistance against the Russian invasion. This behavior is often based on misrepresentations of the positions on the war held by activists from Eastern Europe. Anarchists are accused of having become militarists, of supporting the war, or of not being sufficiently critical of the Ukrainian state.”
What draws the most serious attention is the very surprise that anyone would oppose supporting Ukrainian nationalism against Russian nationalism. Evidently, there has never been—and there still is not—consensus within contemporary anarchism regarding the nature of states and nations. The text not only uses the euphemism “Ukrainian resistance against the Russian invasion” (but what else is war? One state attacks, another resists with its military force), but it also stays mum over the fact that as recently as August 2025, “Solidarity Collectives” attempted to disrupt an event organized by the Assembly collective from Kharkiv. In a statement issued in connection with this, “Solidarity Collectives” and their supporters were convincingly characterized as exactly what they are—“anarcho-militarists” (https://communaut.org/de/von-winnyzja-bis-berlin).
Are deserters and opponents of military service (from all warring sides), along with all those who do not want to die or kill for either side in this war, not “Eastern European voices”? Or is the identity card only in play when it comes to positions that fit into one’s own worldview? Or is memory so short that no one can recall how unceremoniously consistent opponents of the war were treated in Saint-Imier? (https://www.graswurzel.net/gwr/2023/09/ueber-militarisierung-ukrainesol…)
“We do not see any support for war or state militarism in any form in the work of ‘Solidarity Collectives’ and ACHK-Belarus,” the text continues. “Furthermore, we categorically condemn any attempt to isolate anarchist collectives from Eastern Europe on the issue of resistance against the Russian regime’s military expansion.”
On the one hand, this is untrue; on the other, it contradicts the assertion made in the same breath. Anyone who attended the “[Russian] opposition marches” in Berlin in November 2024 (https://knack.news/11396) and in December 2025 could have seen the “anarchist bloc” demanding arms deliveries to Ukraine (https://www.woz.ch/2447/russische-opposition/fuer-ein-ende-des-imperium…). Clearly, a military victory over Russia requires ever-increasing arms production, arms deliveries, and the use of weapons. And foremost, it requires more and more people who will allow themselves to be senselessly slaughtered in the struggle between various capitalist states. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter whether their justifications are anarchist, feminist, socialist, religious, liberal, conservative, or fascist—what matters is that they are armed, trained, and ready for battle.
Anyone seeking a military victory over Putin must not want their comrades from right-wing volunteer units to be killed in battle: that would reduce their own firepower. For those on the Russian side who believe they are fighting “against fascism,” it is also unthinkable to consider neutralizing private military companies or the Rusich group. When it comes to national sovereignty, political camps instantly close ranks. War is a national cause, and the citizens of a state dare not place their own special interests or party preferences above it. And you are participating in this.
Perhaps the “anarchists” who go to war as part of the Ukrainian army convince themselves that they are fighting and killing not for the state at all, but for the people. But that doesn’t make it any better. “The people” is a coercive community. The Ukrainian people exist because the Ukrainian state exists, not the other way around. The same is true of the Russian, Belarusian, and any other “people,” however you define them—by origin, language, culture, or citizenship.
As long as capitalism exists as a global system, there will be countries such as Sudan and Syria, Ukraine and Armenia, Greece and Bolivia. You can’t approach peace everywhere [else] as you do in wealthy nations. The way the European Union and NATO, Russia and China treat countries like Ukraine is unambiguous: the local population, the land, and everything that grows on it or can be extracted from it, must serve to multiply the wealth of capital. It is unclear exactly which capital—Russian or German, American or Chinese—will subsequently take an interest in this or decide that all of this can be obtained more cheaply in another sovereign state. What is clear is that, for states with strong economies, regions beyond their own borders are becoming increasingly attractive for their own economic growth. The entire world of sovereign states must make markets, production sites, and investment opportunities available to their capital. This is the very point at which the interests of states converge. Capitalist growth is unthinkable without violence between states. If we do not achieve theoretical consensus on this issue, joint action is impossible and meaningless. Anyone who is outraged that Putin is using violence against Ukraine, but fails to recognize that the dictates of austerity are also a form of violence, has failed to understand anything about capitalist domination. Those who believe that Russia’s imperial ambitions must be stopped, yet at the same time accept the subjugation of the world to the interests of democratically governed capitalist states as the norm, are no better than those who attribute something “anti-imperialist” to the imperialism of Russia or China. Those who are willing to “understand Putin” and those who advocate for arms deliveries are two sides of the same coin. Drawing a line in the sand against them is not dogmatism. It is perfectly clear that entirely different goals are being pursued here.
Organizations such as the Belarusian AChK have taken a perfectly clear stance. Armed struggle for the “lesser evil” is viewed as a source of experience, is praised in every possible way, and has become the main point of distinction from those who “do nothing in practice.” [According to them, w]hile the state is rounding up young men who are trying to to evade military service, we must focus our attention on the “heroics” of a small handful of anarchists, rather than supporting deserters and draft dodgers from all warring sides. Of their own incapacity to stand up to the invading army alone, they are perfectly well aware.
At the same time, the Dresden AChK is not stingy with propaganda: “You can be Sara Wagenknecht, who opposes the war and supports the Russian Empire. You can be a Russian soldier who, with a weapon in hand, is fighting against [sic] the war in Ukraine, committing genocide, and killing hundreds of innocent people because he believes that peace can only be achieved through the complete annihilation of the Ukrainian people. You can be a Western left-wing intellectual who opposes the war because that’s what the books say, but in reality, social revolution and war are just empty words to him, devoid of any meaning” (https://abcdd.org/2023/10/24/keine-verwendung-fur-solche-leute-weder-in…) (We have ultimately come to understand in recent years that these simple words can be interpreted in different ways, depending on which part of the world or political camp people come from).
But why, all of a sudden, is a nation-state better than an empire? How do you know that Russia is striving for the “complete annihilation of the Ukrainian people”? To fight and kill on the orders of the Ukrainian state, which is supposed to be reformed for adaptation to the global market—what does that have to do with a social revolution?
Yes, Oleksandr Kolchenko, who also signed this appeal, was imprisoned in Russia. No one can criticize him for opposing Putin’s state. But it’s time for us to have a serious conversation about the fact that, during his trial, he sang the Ukrainian national anthem and shouted “Glory to Ukraine!” “National anarchism” under the Ukrainian or any other national flag is something unlike solidarity with people who are suffering because of Russia’s policies. If you believe that the nation-state is a good response to discrimination, we should agree with one another on what exactly “domination” means.
There is also no shortage of voices in Eastern Europe’s public sphere calling for the war to continue at any cost—including “anarchist” ones. Maksym Butkevych, who, as an anarchist, became an officer in the Ukrainian army, is traveling across Europe and campaigning for arms deliveries (https://www.woz.ch/2506/maxim-butkewitsch/dann-macht-man-sich-mitschuld…). Marina Weisband, a Green Party politician, considers herself “an anarchist in her heart of hearts,” but for her, this specifically means insisting on fighting the war to a victorious end (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpg0KUmgRo).
Enough. Please don’t lecture us about “privileges” and “west-splaining” while deserters are being killed at the border in Ukraine (https://www.welt.de/politik/ausland/article252528332/Ukrainischer-Deser…).

it's easier to have clear and congruent ideas, than it is to live in congruence with those ideas. within capitalism, there's no such thing as an anarchist employer, and yet most anarchists work for capitalist companies. it's not about purity, but hard lines can be drawn, and if they're not drawn at some point, anarchism becomes a meaningless idea detached from practice. it's about congruence and intellectual honesty. one can get swallowed up by a war within states, and it's a tactical failure if one did not manage to escape on time, or organize outside of an army. it's an ethical failure as an anarchist, or a betrayal or switching of sides if a person actively works for a state. do people feel remorse for self-betrayal, for moral failures, guilt, or do they demand praise and support from other anarchists, to fail harder? it's not about the moral high ground, but the sincerity of positions. labels that don't correspond with reality are just lies. One can live to tell the tale of a shameful failure one regrets, a compromise to survive, but to boast of it as a feat of anarchism is disingenuous and intellectually dishonest.

Reading the book about this that was recently posted: Anarchists on the War in Ukraine, and reading the sneering childish commenters on here and the anarcho-Putinists trying desperately to pretend they're just opposing some Nazis in Ukraine is instructive. That book details what happens when people face an actual existential threat to their lives from a fascist state and the serious work and thinking they are doing about it.
Nobody is acting like a jeering ironic holier than you sarcastic clown in a situation like that. They're putting their lives on the line to fight actual fascism.
They have actual courage.
The luxury of your sneering is gonna run out someday, or maybe not. The rest of us will be learning from the people actually fighting to survive.
Russia can no longer sell it's bonds. China is owns much of its eastern economy already and is talking about 'Greater Manchuria.'
Russia could very possibly break up and that would be a dangerous thing indeed, fragmented micro states, serious danger. Also opportunity and risk.
If I was a pro Russian anarchist I'd spend more time preparing for that.
One things for sure, the future of that region, which is the place that the largest leftist experiments that half the world still larps happened, is one that is going to show us a lot about the future and how we actually fight fascism.
I think the clowns on here that just wanna snark are the least interesting people in the world.

No?
Both are possible. If it does win it will continue to invade more of Eastern Europe like it says it will and like the people there expect it to.
I can't predict the future, it's just looking increasingly likely it will lose. Cos you know, an oligarchic mafia state is propped up by its bonds and it's capacity to expand and seize resources, and both of those are failing. And Ukraine is wiping out it's oil refineries.
'Man child drones.' You realize Russia also has drones? And everyone else increasingly. You are the one who clearly is exposing yourself as fantasizing that if Ukraine loses the Russians will just stop. Will they turn their drones into ploughshares lmao? They were the ones who invaded. They were the ones who started it all. They were the ones trying to expand their territory. Jfc there's rarely been a war more clear-cut than this.
"No war but the technological war". Hey good luck primmies. Drones will, like knives and guns, go away if we wish them too. Or maybe we'll write a strongly worded letter to big drone and he'll see sense.
There's not even a clear argument in any of these posts. You really want to call all of us evil NATO warmongers. That's it.
Russia will have worse things to worry about than NATO. I get why it's mad. Given how it's been treated since the end of communism I would hardly expect it to be happy about this long slow decline and then spasm of psychotic fascist genocide in the hopes it can revive itself.

Nope, NATO has, and confimed it in that 2008 summit in Romania. They were already militarizing East Europe and seeking an expansion into Ukraine and beyond.
Also who had invaded Afghanistan seven years prior, two years after bombing the hell out of Serbia & Bosnia and taking over Kosovo? Yes... that same "defense-only" organization.

"...fight actual fascism."
Just so we're all on the same page, this is Billy minimizing fascism in Ukraine, which, in reality, is just as "actual" as Russian fascism, in fact, so actual, that Russian fascists like White Rex Denis Kapustin are fighting for Ukraine rather than Russia. The Russian fascist Sergey Petrovichev, who openly posted pics of himself with fellow Nazis under a White Rex banner, died fighting for the Ukrainian state and since then has been glorified and memorialized by supposed anarchists in Ukraine.
Sinclair notes, "...in May of 2026, Zelensky heaped praise upon the Nazi collaborator and Ukrainian fascist, Andriy Melnyk, as his corpse was taken from Luxembourg to be official reburied and honoured in Ukraine at the National Military Memorial Cemetery. Zelensky also that month bestowed upon a special forces unit of the army the honourary title of 'Heroes of the UPA' (Ukrainska Povstanska Armiia), which was the armed formation of the OUN, the pogromists and Nazi collaborators... American Active Clubs co-founder Robert Rundo, who has been imprisoned and released after violent attacks in the US, explained to a right-wing podcast back in 2017 that with regard to Ukraine’s Azov movement, 'this is always my whole inspiration for everything.'"
In my opinion there's no real need to downplay Ukrainian (and by extension American fascism and certain Russian fascists) in order for Russian fascism to be taken more seriously. The Ukrainian state's war effort may be pushing the idea that it's necessary to downplay Ukrainian fascism and emphasize Russian fascism, but for actual anarchists, it's not necessary, particularly for anarchists in NATO countries, countries that are directly arming the Ukrainian and Russian fascists in Ukraine rather than the fascists in Russia. Fuck apologism for fascists, wherever they are. Fuck militarists and fash apologists who pose as anarchists in order to slander anti-fascist anarchists on behalf of NATO, Ukraine and Israel.

I like how you play stupid and pretend you don't know what you're own words, "fight actual fascism" mean. I also like how you think we're too stupid to realize that "random information" is also a minimization of Ukrainian fascism (and Russian fascists in Ukraine). I like too how you pretend anarchists and fascists in the Ukrainian army are the only oppressed people in the world and everyone who so much as thinks outside the Ukrainian state line is a privileged narcissist. It's the other way around, you are the privileged ones compared to all the victims of the NATO imperialism you love so much, and the victims of Ukraine, with its part in the invasion of Iraq, arming of Myanmar during a genocide, arming of Saudi Arabia, one of the richest countries in the world, as it attacked Yemen, one of the poorest, purchasing of Israeli weapons, support at the UN for the blockade of Cuba. In the global class war, Ukraine is on the side of the wealthy and powerful. There are many more victims of Ukraine's NATO/Israel camp than vice versa, and more of those victims are not white. You're not against invasion or fascism, you're just a crusader.

I explicitly said in the last hellthread we can learn from everyone including the people doing that. We can learn about the whole thing. And we should study it. I'm learning more from doing that than I am from the armchair anti-generals on here who just want to say over and over again that those fighting Putinist fascism are not anarchists. I have respect for these people and others don't. That's their perogative and frankly I don't care.
"Heroes of the national resistance", if the implication is that the anarchists there are bad because someone else would put them in that category I reject it.
There are others in this thread trying to argue the war was caused by NATO. I hope nobody is trying to imply if NATO didn't exist Russia wouldn't have launched it's aggressive war. It would have.
Hell if the Ukrainian state had collapsed before this all started Russia would have been right in there.
"Ukrainians have been settlers" someone else said. They're being murdered so russians can steal and settle in their homes right now.
Whatever position people want to take on this I know what position I take and there are better things to do like sending aid and listening than going on yet another fucking tantrum trying to call anarchists fighting against Russia fascists not anarchists and implying they are bad over and over again, and constantly trying to erase the difference between them and Russian fascist invaders by equivocating the two.

it's very easy to pass judgments about the anarcho-purity of the decisions that people make when there are tanks running down their streets. is it defense of nation inherently or can it just be defense of home, as in "i fucking live here."

Just get over yourself and say "I'm a liberal" or "I'm a marxist" or whatever you are. You're not a victim of anarcho-purists. You're a victim of you own cowardice in not admitting that you're just against anarchism, Everything doesn't have to be the same as everything else. It's easy to pass judgement when you aren't there. Anarchists from Ukraine are and have been speaking about their experiences and rather than having any solidarity with a situation that we cannot possibly conceive of (since we are living in relative privilege compared to people who are living in an active war zone) we're accusing them of being nationalists and NATO supporters.
Anarchists have fought in wars before. Sometimes building troops ourselves, sometimes joining the state because they have access to the weapons of war that perhaps they couldn't get on their own.
Anarchists from Ukraine are "guilty" of defending their home in ways that other anarchists don't approve of. We didn't seem to have a problem when anarchists went to Rojava and joined that state's military when they were fighting to defend their home. As far as I know Rojava is also a state, just as much as Ukraine, with all the accoutrements, including prison. But for Rojava we're able to understand nuance and context. With anarchists in Ukraine, defending their own homes? All of that good faith is gone. I don't know why.
A lot of people are saying that the only correct answer is to leave, but when have we ever before suggested that people cede their homes to invasion forces? We should hide from genocide? Like this is just ridiculous.

c. people here are mostly responding -- sometimes with their own knee jerk responses for sure -- to billy's provocations, to margaret killjoy's terrible interview, and to wayne's continuing disagreement. mostly people here are not saying ukrainians should just leave, i have mostly seen people saying that fighting in a state military is not anarchist. it's a simple definitional point. people might also be arguing that there are other options, which may be more or less realistic, but the bottom line is that FIGHTING IN A STATE MILITARY IS NOT ANARCHIST.

No, that is not all. Nor is it even the main issue. Making it the main issue is a way of avoiding the main issues.
Which are (1) Should anarchists support the Ukrainian people against the Russian imperialist invasion? Do anarchists support the right of oppressed peoples to national self-determination?
(2) Should anarchists support the Ukrainian people *even though* their war is led by a capitalist state (which we oppose)?
(3) Only if we agree with points one and two does the question come up of *how* Ukrainian anarchists should support their people. There are a number of things they could do (help refugees, distribute food and medicine, support workers' strikes, etc.). *One* such possible activity is to join the regular military (since the option of forming an independent armed force is currently unlikely). It is possible to reject participating in the bourgeois army while still supporting one and two.
(4)Have some of the Ukrainian-defensist anarchists mistakenly failed to make clear their opposition to capitalism, the state, Western imperialism, and fascism? This is certainly possible, but it would not disprove the values of points one and two.

"She's fighting for her life against fascist invaders."
So were fascist Metaxas' troops against the fascist invader Mussolini's troops. And no, Makhnovists didn't have to join the Ukrainian People's Republic in order to fight the White Army. Just like back at that time, there were two fascistic factions fighting each other for control over the region, and some antifascist people had chosen a different path that wasn't pleasing either foreign powers. That's likely because they weren't stupid enough as to be falling for the lesser-evilism crapaganda,
is that...nationalism?

READING. "For myself, I will say that I personally am not very interested in communicating with anarchists from Russia, because, I confess, I feel great pain and resentment towards everything that is east of Kharkiv, towards all these people."

“ "I know and am looking for ultra-leftists who are for an independent socialist republic of Ukraine with genuine democracy and the abolition of private property (it sounds scary, but if you read it, you will understand). Who believe that fighting for Ukrainian or Russian oligarchs is pointless, as Marx, Lenin or Kropotkin explained. Who are against all, as it should be"
Although the verdict appeared in the court register right then, just under the New Year's tree, we decided not to publish it until we received a comment from the sentenced one: "Lol, I was convicted for this case and had to move to another city. They convicted me for displaying banned symbols. I was so naive, I thought no one would even notice. But it turns out the Security Service keeps an eye on all these moves. They don't put everyone in jail, but if you break the law, they immediately open a case. I can't say much."”
I’d also mock Rojava or anywhere else. Join or shut up, there’s nothing left to say.

It's even easier to pass judgement from afar in support of a war when you're not the one at risk of conscription or of having to actually fight and die in that war.
Since forever have other people, in other parts of the world, less privileged than Ukrainians, had to flee wars and genocides. You really have never heard of the history of the Americas or of Palestine? I don't think I'll take advice from you on the Russia-Ukraine war when you're that incredibly ignorant and callous about the history that non-Europeans have already had to live through for hundreds of years, not just since 2014.
Back in the day, Ukrainian settlers were among the benefactors of the invasion forces on the "Canadian" prairies. The government specifically advertised "free land" to them after the military did its ethnic cleansing.
On the other hand, the Indigenous peoples resisting that invasion didn't magically become anarchist just because they were resisting invasion, just like Palestinians or Lebanese or Iranians resisting the US and Israel don't magically become anarchist by resisting invasion and aggression. Such resistance may be correct, but that doesn't make the resistance forces automatically anti-authoritarian in structure and ideology.
It's actually just common sense that things don't become "anarchist" just because they're right or necessary, so even if you think joining the Ukrainian army is the right thing to do, in no way does that make it "anarchist", nor is it necessary to lie and say that it's anarchist when we all know it's not. Militarism is the antithesis of anarchism, as anarchists like Durruti and Malatesta knew.

I'll continue being anonymous because I know that what I'm going to say will be cussed and ad hominemed excessively, as I've always been for the last 18 yrs.
We anarchs don't get attached to property or its contractual obligations. If a stronger side wants to drive tanks and fly drones all over the place I live at , I am long gone. I am so tuned into anticipating spook-infected cultural trends that I can achieve a 2 week head start, even in the digital panopticon hell of neo-feudal corporatist/capitalism, THE POETIC CREATIVE ANARCH IS ALWAYS FREE,,OK !
We will run, and we will hide, and hopefully, we won't die, and live another everyday revolution..

No cuss or digs, but you know they won’t let it happen forever. I sympathise and want to escape to the forest also. But a data centre can always be plonked next to wherever you go, the land deserted, the waters polluted, the crops spoiled. At some point, people are going to have to dig in and scrap. Given the odds, creativity would be handy.

it might be helpful to have those food forests rebuilt by the time 20-30 more years pass and some people are hungry. since squares will always be there to uphold states, i don't see much of a trajectory to the pursuit of autonomy. but at least, certain things can be prefigured. i like seeds and soil

Apparently now this is "anarcho-purist" to be refusing to join Neonazi military factions when you're anarchist.
Tho what is really the wrong with fleeing an area invaded by a brutally violent imperialist force, when facing it alone or with relatives? Ah yes! "Betraying your nation" yady yada...
Could it be that the only actual Purists here are the national-anarchists, here, attempting to blame people for seeking to leave or having left Ukraine? Crazy if true! 0_0

I come to A News once in a blue moon to check the temperature on various topics. I used to be highly involved and organizing with anarchist collectives 15 years ago. now Im growing into a crudgety middle aged man who didnt follow the covid rules and doesnt "support ukraine." so for me it's relieving to see a lively back and forth between various anarchist points of view on this subject. I read this comment section feeling relief. two years ago I didnt catch any debating like this in these comment sections. it was all pro ukraine Belarusian anarchist translations that nobody argued against, for sake of supporting whatever the comrades are doing. and that German vlogger guy who seemed to be saying it's our duty to support any anarchist fighting the Russian state. so you could say i felt like anarchists were just going along with it, just like they went along with covid. it just seems like the free speech zone is getting smaller and smaller and youre likely going to be outcasted for having the "wrong" perspective these days. ukraine is one of those topics.
but now there's a discussion going on that im here for. I wonder what shifted, or did people just not speak up until they got more educated on the topic?
