Not All Anarchists Are Violent

Regarding the Aug. 13 Metro article “For D.C. anarchists, chaos as protest”:

I suppose protests and violence make better copy than ideas, which is why anarchists appear in The Post only when they cause some measure of havoc. Readers might be surprised to learn that most anarchists have opposed violence. Two of history’s most famous anarchists, Leo Tolstoy and Mohandas Gandhi, were pacifists. William Godwin, the first person to espouse anarchism, taught that it must come about peacefully, through the moral improvement of all classes, capitalist and worker alike. Josiah Warren, America’s first anarchist, abhorred violence and thus opposed both slavery and the Civil War. The United States’ most famous anarchist, Benjamin Tucker, repeatedly condemned violence no matter its source, governments or other anarchists. Another American anarchist, Ammon Hennacy, so opposed violence that he suffered incarceration as a conscientious objector, and he worked as a day laborer in the 1940s and 1950s to prevent the U.S. government from withholding taxes from his wages to pay for war.

Anarchism has had its apostles of violence, as have Republicans, Democrats, monarchists and socialists. But in the main, anarchism has espoused and practiced peace.

from the washington post...

I would prefer not to be violent but I don't think it's possible in a violent world. I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, a pacifist and a conscientious objector and experienced some bullying and harassment. I also lived a double life and ran amuck when Mom wasn't around. As a teen I left the church and became a skate punk, more worldly and aggressive. I tend toward diversity of tactics but of course discretion is the better part of valor.

One of the things that those who espouse the "diversity of tactics" argument fail to realize is that this approach holds no weight for those who reject violence because of a fundamental moral, ethic or principles. With them, "tactics" is not the issue at hand with regards to violence.

We don't "fail to understand" so much as roll our eyes at the pathetic naïveté ... Sometimes I'm openly sneering? Depends which side of the bed, you know?

What the hell is violence to a country that wields and has used atomic bombs?

Kick a dog and it will bite. Articles like this forget that everyone is a closet biter.

Good, you can define words. Wow. Amazing! But, never explain events or their externalities, but frame a simple, narrow, narrative. A symbolic view.

How many news stories that need to be sold (negative clicks are also a profitable reaction) that are really just non-stories, both obvious and non-issues (they need to create fear with to keep people captivated and within their profitability quotas)?

I wouldn't get hung up on spontaneous self defensive rage, but that's not violence, which is a premeditated choice to demonstrate rage,, and usually has a clinically cold and impersonal element in its application.

PS This premeditated violence is linked to ressentiment ultimately, sadism being its sublimated personification.

I suppose appeals to so-called peaceful protest make liberals feel better about themselves, which is why this was published in the WaPo. Pacificists may be surprised to learn that by particpating in the modern world, there is more blood on their hands than they'd like to admit. Two of history's most famous pacificists, Gandhi and the Dalai Lama upheld brutally hierarchical religious institutions that enslaved millions.

Anarchism has had it's apostles of nonviolence, but in the main most anarchists dismiss such foolery.

why do "anarchists" continue to be so subservient to pacifism? honestly whooo the fuck cares if anarchists are violently destroying this world? are there other anarchists who are concerned for the destruction of their property? their material investments? all the comforts of consumerism that numb them to the violent reality of civilized existence? get the fuck out of here with this peaceful shit."we must be portrayed as peaceful, civilized people by the media to capture the membership of the masses- because my lord jesus christ what kinda anarchists can we be if we cant organize the masses!?".
