Pittsburgh Fuck the Police march reportback
Approximately 30 people gathered at Liberty Ave and Ella at 6pm in the dark for a solidarity march with Ferguson and against the police. This was an impressive turnout for an event which was called for the day of. Nearly everybody who showed up was dressed in black and face well covered.
The march began suddenly as a newspaper box and trash can were pulled into the street. It continued east on Liberty taking up one lane of traffic, all while random debris was pulled into the street behind. Shouts of fuck the police were yelled and chanted. A banner reading cops, pigs, murderers was carried along. A flare was lit. Police showed up several blocks into the march with a van, maintaining a large distance behind us. It seemed clear they were not interested in a confrontation. Those in attendance stayed tight together.
After snaking through allies we returned to Liberty Ave heading west through Bloomfield. Just before the march ended an ATM was smashed. The march dispersed successfully in the tight streets behind Liberty and no arrests were made. The march ended in under 30 minutes and did not conflict with other protests in the city.
As a spontaneous collective expression of rage, the march was successful, though in hindsight far more destruction could have been carried out, and more done to communicate with bystanders. This observer hopes that the lessons learned and confidence gained tonight are put to use creatively in the coming days.
