Toronto: Announcing the 2024 ACABbq, Aug. 11

We are very excited to officially announce the ACABbq 2024. The first iteration of this event will be held on August 11th, 2024 from 12pm-6pm at Dufferin Grove Park, Toronto, Ontario. It is a summer barbecue for anarchists in Toronto, Ontario, and beyond. Everyone is welcome to come together enjoy some free food, read some radical lit and share ideas. Toronto needs a flourishing anarchist scene, and we hope to rekindle the destruction of hierarchy in this city overrun with liberals. Whether you are an anarchist, anarcho-curious, left-leaning, or sympathetic, there is a place for you here.

Time and Location

The ACABbq will be on Sunday August 11th 2024 from 12pm-6pm at Dufferin Grove Park. Keep an eye out for the ACABbq banner at the park. We will be situated near the skate rink and “Clubhouse” building where there are a number of picnic tables and benches. Seating will be limited, as it is a park. There are some picnic tables, and other seating available at the park. Bring your own park blankets or lawn chairs if you can though!

Food!

We will have vegan hot dogs, gluten free and regular buns, vegan pasta salad, drinks and other summer treats available for people. People are welcome to bring food to share as well! If you are bringing food at a bare minimum please bring a note card with potential allergens, and whether it is vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, Kosher or Halal. We will have extra index cards and sharpies in case you forget. We will try to have extra serving containers to leave food in, but there is no guarantee. It would be best to bring the food in a container you can leave behind.

Community

Have a cool idea? Want to show off your cool new radical lit? Want to run a fun summer activity? Know some rad skills you want to share? Want to tell people about your collective? Contact us and we will discuss adding you to the event list. There a couple picnic tables aim to reserve for the event, and will be bringing extra folding tables. It will be ideal for you bring your own table.

Directions

Dufferin Grove park is located on the western side of Toronto. Just south of Bloor St between Dufferin St and Havelock St on the west and east sides respectively. And Dufferin Park Ave and Sylvan Ave on the north and south sides respectively.

Transit

The closest subway station is Dufferin station. It is a short walk south on Dufferin St from the station. Alternatively you can take the 29S bus from Dufferin Station and get out at Dufferin Park Ave or Sylvan Ave. You can also get to the park by getting off the college 506 streetcar at Dufferin St and walking north to the park, or getting on the 29N bus and getting off at one of the stops mentioned above.

Biking

Bike parking is available anywhere you can lock your bike too! A dedicated bike rack is located near the rink on the north side of the park. Both Havelock St and Gladstone Ave have bi-directional north/south bike lanes.

Parking/Driving

There is free parking available at the parking lot for Dufferin Mall across from the park. There are lots of side streets where street parking may be available, but make sure to check the street signs.

Walkways

There are a couple paved and hard gravel paths. Many of the paths that connect to Dufferin St on the western side of the park have stairs, steep inclines/declines, or are unpaved. The central north/south pathway is flat along the length of the park, and is the most accessible. The entrances from Gladstone St on both the north and south side of the park connect to this path. These entrances can be reached from Dufferin Park Ave and Sylvan Ave.

Reaching the BBQ will require some traversal over grass. We will aim to have the food as close as possible to the path.

Washrooms

The Dufferin Mall has public accessible washrooms available in the mall, but is quite a walk away. There are washrooms are near The Clubhouse in the north west corner of the park. The Clubhouse washrooms are gender-neutral, with one accessible washroom.

Food/Allergens

The grill will only be used to cook the vegan hot dogs. Limited amount of gluten free buns will be available, but given the outdoor nature of the event we can not guarantee cross-contamination will be prevented, especially with condiments, and food other people are bringing.

Seating

There is no guaranteed seating. The park does have some picnic tables, as well as stones around the firepits.

Masking

We are asking all attendees to mask while not eating. Masks will be available at the event.
