Protests against the genocide in Gaza have moved on from the streets, the train lines, and the docks, to greener pastures: grass plots at university campuses.
The spring weather allows for students to take the lawn (while not yet killing it) where they remain relatively unobtrusive to the forces at play in the conflict they are referencing.
Human rights discourse has failed to stop the genocide in Gaza, and so has camping in college campuses, along with everything else until now.
Is there anyone around to apply lessons learned during the 2020 uprisings set off by the murder of George Floyd by police (including CHOP / CHAZ), or Occupy before that, or the protests to stop the Iraq war before that? Was there nothing to be learned? What tried & true cliches and tropes will you be sticking to, and which will you avoid this time around?
Will you participate in the student protest campsites popping up in campuses across USA?
If so, why? What are the best ways anarchists can participate in them? Will you participate mainly hoping to impact the situation in Gaza, or simply to spread anarchy? What zines will you bring? What supplies will you bring and why?
How do you relate to grassroots and native struggles, and how do you deal with those who astroturf them?
If not, why not? Where are anarchists' efforts better spent if they'd like to stop the genocide in Gaza, or if they simply want to spread anarchy?

it is sad that so many “combative” and insurrectionary anarchists tend to have the same general strategy as liberal college students: forcing de-investment from businesses which contribute to the war in gaza. one uses sit-ins one rocks, but the goal is the same, and so is the sheep-like behavior, one just veils it with bravado. add to this the fact the strategy doesn’t even work, even if you were lame enough to try it. you would need almost all investors to de-invest at once, otherwise it just a money-switching game. this is all on top of the fact that there is nothing anarchists outside the region could do anywhere, or even really understand what is going on historically, culturally, etc….my best advice, stay home, treat people in your life with an anarchistic respect, and push back on all the things right around you which impede freedom.

Why don't you take your own advice and just focus on your own "home," and let people express themselves how they feel, boy-o?
TL;DR: If you're so sure that others should just stick to "what's beneath their feet" (yeah we know it's you) then follow your own advice and stop giving advice outside of your own "home". Don't follow the "sheep-like behavior" thinking you need to give advice to the world like some expert in "freedom" that has it all figured out.

The real issue with the activist goal here is that these universities contribute diddly-squat, in terms of funding and donation, to the military industrial complex. The bulk of the funding for the military industrial complex comes from government contractors [to produce weapons cheaply] and standard income taxation. The role that universities play in the "bad guy" side of the Israel/Palestine conflict more or less comes in the form of diversion and ideological support for having militaries and cops.
The bulk of university funding, which comes from the students themselves, in general goes directly to the stuff: otherwise universities wouldn't operate the way they do. Universities are rackets just like the police and military. It's hard to imagine that all these college rebels are going to drop out when they already invested in the university.
The whole investor activism thing is a big fad these days, but it's normally just a power struggle among rich capitalists.

Does the media dictate to these protesting people what world issue they should protest? Like anarchist and protestors are all about Gaza and Ukraine, which also happens to be a hot topic with the western media. cha ching. I've never seen people protest s"Human rights" violations like the Houthi slaying large amounts of Yemenis, Pakistan's blasphemy laws that slays and/or imprison larges amount of people, Tigray War and its ethnic cleansing, or Burma/Myanmar state ethnic cleansing of any and all ethnic minority groups. The western media doesn't rarely discuss those matters because it doesn't bring in the cash money. The western media studies what sales the best and the four I mentioned do not. There seems to be a correlation between what the western media sells and what protestors protests. At the same time, these protestors don't seem to care, nor have the desire to protest it. I don't understand
I think any and every anarchist would agree that human rights doesn't exist. It's meaningless jibber-jabbeer, but besides that, what are these protestor actually doing? Do they think sleeping in tents on a college campus have any sway over the west selling Israel bunker busters bombs and other arms, or that Israel cares about what some liberal hipster at an ivy league school sleeping in their expensive tents dare doing?

I agree with the 5 comments so far but yes, I am handing out anarchist zines and other flyers and apprising people of the genocide on indigenous people in this country, which is still going on, while I'm at these encampments. And the people around me suck shit, look at their phones all day and shop for crap. An encampment with people outdoors is a helluva lot better than being around that. I've been using this new protest space to vent and bitch about the cops and to make people aware of the nat'l MMIP day coming up this Sunday. There are shitloads of missing and murdered indigenous people so if nothing else, this is a good opportunity to get this into the fore. The avg life expectancy just dropped by several years for "American Indian/Alaska Native" persons in some rural areas. It's a genocide.
Bonus too: I hung out with 2 very old people at an encampment today who told me stories of how they were arrested many times when they were young for fucking with cops. So, I wouldn't have heard these hilarious stories if it weren't for the protests. Plus these protests might flare up and out to something greater though I would never dare hold my breath waiting for that.
I guess what I mean in short is that- it's better than nothing. And shit, if some students quit a college cuz of it., they'll save themselves some astronomical debt and the school will lose tuition money.

This is a great opportunity to show everyone that real anarchists don’t stand in solidarity with anyone. This isn’t lazy or cowardly, just consistent: since almost everyone in the world is an authoritarian, it’s un-anarchist to do anything that doesn’t revolve around how much more radical we are. Oh you’re a newly radicalized college student? Fuck you, leftoid. You’re a third world refugee being bombed? Double fuck you because you’re a nationalist and you’re religious. In fact, maybe we should go take over some place in the world where we can make sure only anarchists are allowed to live. The post about the "great opportunity" is sarcastic but to the point. Anarchists shouldn't be standing outside of this popular movement but should be fully engaged. The issue is not whether any one university divests from Israel, but whether popular opposition can be mobilized against US financial and military support for Israeli mass murder. This movement is exposing the good, peaceful, pretensions of the universities as well as the Democratic Party (it ain't Trump who is blowing up the Palestinians). Our goal should be to build a revolutionary anarchist wing of this national student movement--not stand aside and carp!

but, keeping in mind how we have really different long term goals--outside of a single issue-- is essential, especially in a world where a. anarchist is a contradictory and misleading label, b. anarchist allies are known to kill us when we're no longer convenient, and c. the people who are most eager to join with others are frequently also the ones who lose track of the IMPORTANT differences.

Chisel points out that " we [anarchists] have really different long term goals" from liberals, state socialists (reformists and revolutionaries), Palestinian nationalists, jihadists, etc. This is true.
Which is why I do not advocate that anarchists simply dissolve themselves into the movement as good militants. I wrote above: "Our goal should be to build a revolutionary anarchist wing of this national student movement." Just because we should work together with others who oppose the US-supported Israeli mass murder of Palestinians, does not mean that we should cover our specific opinions. (Indeed it is striking how even the most "radical" of anti-Zionist statements do not speak of this horror as rooted in capitalism and the national state. *We* should be pointing this out.)

squats in greece have housed informal/undocumented migrants, these bought in bulk color coordinated tents are mostly props to tell a narrative of protest. might as well use flashy giant puppets at that point, and effigies.
if people care about gaza, they could attack what’s hurting gaza. the silver lining on harmless tent spectacle is untended tents can be stolen and used for real camping if some action or anarchist gathering would require that.

If you post a PDF, I can view or download it. I can have JavaScript disabled in my browser, and in my PDF viewer. On the other hand, if you post a cryptpad, it's impossible to view or download unless I enable JavaScript.
So I think it's a good point. If you want someone with anonymity/privacy concerns to access your document, don't locate it behind an app whose noscript tags just wrap the message "You must enable JavaScript."

Nice try FBI.
Many files such as PDFs, especially on stupid operating systems that set them executable, can AUTOMATICALLY download assets which WILL "deanonymizing" Tor users on-the-spot.
Tor project even has in their FAQ: WARNING. You should be very careful when downloading documents via Tor (especially DOC and PDF files, unless you use the PDF viewer that's built into Tor Browser) as these documents can contain Internet resources that will be downloaded outside of Tor by the application that opens them. This will reveal your non-Tor IP address. If you must work with files downloaded via Tor, we strongly recommend either using a disconnected computer, or using dangerzone to create safe PDF files that you can open. Under no circumstances is it safe to use BitTorrent and Tor together, however.
Don't be such a shill.

Can't you just read comments? I did write opening PDFs "offline" after downloading. And I knew for years already that PDFs and videos can execute code that calls home and deanons someone... but that isn't done just by downloading the file, duh.
Tell us how a program or line of code can just open/execute by itself, outside of stupid Windows systems that are set with Google or other cloud integration, as even in this case, that'd be due to external anti-features opening the files, not the damn file opening itself.
That's basic programming that you need some command to execute code for it to run, dumbo.

There are a MANY cases where simply downloading a file without opening it could lead to execution of attacker controlled code from within the file. It usually involves exploiting a known vulnerability within a program which will handle the file in some way. Here are SOME examplest:
Quarantine your shit and scan it. Stop promoting bad security practices because you're lazy and don't shill for Adobe or Microsoft and think you're safe because you run Ubuntu on your $3K Zenbook.

anon (not verified) Tue, 04/30/2024 - 18:12
I dunno man... leaving all the comment section bitching aside, fundamentally there's absolutely nothing anarchistic with supporting the Palestinian cause as this is inhrerently an ethno-nationalist project. It is legit of course to be protesting the Israeli state's devastation of Gaza on humanitarian grounds, but where was all the militancy in protest against all the other massacres by states? Why is this fucking obsession with that single-issue struggle when so many people in the US are starving in misery, getting brutalized by cops in/out of prison?
"Palestine" says absolutely zero about the situation of Queer, Black, disabled or poor people in the Western world. It says nothing about the nature of repressive states, on the rising influence of theocracies and other authoritarian governances in the non-Western world, that are the most obvious contradictions to any sort of anarchy whatsoever. It says nothing about the terrible repression of women in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Afghanistan... Muslim-dominated brutal regimes that are connected with the support to Palestine as well.
So what is the meaning of "Free Palestine"?
How about just "Free Yourselves"? About "Free (this anarchist prisoner... from a very long list)"? Or "Free Exarkhia"?
Well I gotta self-correct...
anon (not verified) Tue, 04/30/2024 - 18:22
In reply to I dunno man... leaving all by anon (not verified)
Well I gotta self-correct... The conflict in Israel has to do with one theocratic and authoritarian aspect having taken over Israeli politics, so in a way "Palestine" says something about it, yes. But it says very little about the theocratic and authoritarianism within the very Palestinian movement in itself. It is a very puzzling, neverending conflict of two fascisms, a bit like we got with Russia Vs Ukraine. But the authoritarianism of either side keeps commanding to us "outsiders" to take sides.
Polarization is the tool for subjugation and instrumentalization of people, in order to make them fight and die for the same old bunch of elite shit lords, from either side. I thought this should be a well-understood notion especially in anarchist circles?
Funny how Otto Skorzeny worked both for the Mossad for a time, while also training, funding and arming the PLFP in their early years through the Paladin Group...

Dunno Man writes, "fundamentally there's absolutely nothing anarchistic with supporting the Palestinian cause as this is inhrerently an ethno-nationalist project."
Fundamentally the essence of anarchism is being opposed to any and all oppression, whether due to class, gender, age, ecology, sexual identity or orientation, religion, or "ethno-nationalism." And believing that the solution is total and consistent belief in freedom and community.

Buskers and beggars are way better than Hamas and their myriads of front groups, as at least with the former the money goes from one pocket to another's pockets, and it's about survival.
Hamas oligarchs, tho, take most of the money funneled across the planet just to maintain their wealth living in posh hotels and paying peanuts to train child-soldiers. And this stuff should be supported by anarchists because "they Oppressed".

You know ... it's times like this where you can really see how the corpse of the long dead left has pretty much finished disintegrating, the post left critique has been heard and heard and heard
Most of the "post leftists" have also died of old age or irrelevancy and now I'm staring in to a void, filled with cyborgs, also staring in to their own black mirrors, needing to be reminded of super obvious shit like -
You know why the media narratives dictate mass street politics? Because a large scale discussion on a topic is required to draw out large crowds.
Want to focus on an issue outside of the media narratives? Go nuts! Plenty of important stuff to work on but you'll damn near kill yourself trying to draw out a large crowd for it and still get nowhere. You cant draw large crowds unless there's signal boosting. Full stop. It's just how it is, therefore, no mass street politics without media attention. Therefore, different tactics.
Without checking which way the wind blows, chances are you'll try an Instagram post or two and fail miserably, then quit. Just how it is.
It's not a failing of anarchists or anarchy or their analysis. It's the terrain, the situation. It's the whole geopolitical chessboard, "the great game" ..and we are very small, which is good!

Would becoming involved in the truckers' convoys had made "us" more relevant? But oh sure, they weren't as Left-friendly and were Whiter than the hordes of ultra-conservative Brown brodudes on trust funds, and with less Oppressed tokenizing... :-(
Or did I just forget Islam is the religion of the Oppressed... despite political Islam being the retrograde ideology leading over brutal misogynist regimes like Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Indonesia (and a province in Malaysia)? I wonder how it feels to be a Leftist with those radical progressive ideas and also have those regimes under your big tent.
Like, Erdogun just halted trade with Israel. BDS!!! But that's also the very same phallocrat shitlord who publicly expressed his admiration for Adolf Hitler. Sorryyy, this is what polarization does!
So the question remains... that should we be engaged in ANY opposition movement, just because it'd give us socio-political significance? What is the trade-off really, for adding some ethno-nationalist cause to our list of FBI crosshairs? Do you even get free scholarships in a major Iranian university when you're not even an academic?

"The spring weather allows for students to take the lawn (while not yet killing it) where they remain relatively unobtrusive to the forces at play in the conflict they are referencing.
Human rights discourse has failed to stop the genocide in Gaza, and so has camping in college campuses, along with everything else until now."
Yes: the spring weather "allowed" the students to protest, because protest politics are all about letting the authorities notice you. Sometimes this has the effect of getting bludgeoned by a copper, sometimes it can draw attention to something and feed a long term "struggle". Since these protesters constantly talk about how what Palestinians go through is so much worse than the problems they have, maybe they should be occupying during the coldest parts of the year: just for pedantic logical consistency. Everyone loves an anarchist with integrity, bla bla bla, the moral highground forces your enemies to change through democracy, blah blah blah.
What exactly is meant by "until now", what is the goal? Will these bright eyes and bushy tailed college students bring peace to the middle east, and end fascism?
I think maybe the best that can come out of this is that young people will start a tradition of not trusting any form of institutional "education", but that is a stretch!

Myself and others have been out protesting (but no, not camping) in extremely cold and harsh conditions since this particular genocide began. Maybe it's naive but I think people are camping out in greater numbers becuse we keep sending Israel billions despite months of vocal and obvious disapproval, and also because we know Palestinians personally who have lost dozens of family members--with more sure to perish.

Saudi Arabia & Turkey are not supporters of the Palestinian cause. The Saudis have been working toward establishinfg relations with Israel, shot down missiles aimed at Israel from Yemen, repress pro-Palestine work within the kingdom. Turkey continues to have strong economic ties to Israel & kicked out Hamas representatives in October. Iran's support does not mean you couldn't submit articles criticizing their colonial regime. Anews has posted several features from Iranian & Afghan anarchists.
All of this is besides the point tho which is that you presume support for Palestine & opposition to Israel amounts to ethnonationalism

Erdogan trying to to brand himself as pro-Palestine by pointing Hamas is an anti colonial movement doesn't change that the Turkish government kicked them out:

Linking to an NYT article about his empty rhetoric doesn't prove anything except your disinterest in checking your sources. The economic links with Israel also continue—Jerusalem Post didn't do their research, though even they noted Turkish-Israel diplomatic relations still exist.
