Fiction's greatest horrors are products of their social contexts. As someone pre-occupied with the destruction of society itself, these contexts and how stories come out of them has always fascinated me.
The vampire stories we've all grown up with largely stem from anxieties of the xenosexual invader of the 1800s - A man from a far away land who threatens to penetrate and corrupt virginal European women.
In Singapore and Malaysia, the pontianak arose from a period of high infant mortality and birthing deaths in a rigidly patriarchal society. Hundreds of years later she can be found in Southeast Asian cinema, still taking gory revenge on men.
Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein in trepidation of western medical sciences positioning themselves to eclipse biblical miracles. We are all born flawed in sin and are pretenders to God's throne. Domain over life and death is not ours.
More recently, Freddy Kreuger tainted starchy Boomer Americana with Gen X homosexuality only a few years into the budding AIDS crisis, the Babadook personified depression at the height of a rising Western concern over mental health, and Candyman ensured the noisy and bright cityscape wasn't safe from things that go bump in the night.
Every one of these monsters speaks volumes about both the cultures and times they were created. Old spectres are given new life in the shadows of new horrors. The fears they explore (or exploit) come from the depths of our collective subconscious.
But what scares anarchists?
What do those fears come from?
Is there, or can there be, an entity these fears are filtered through or projected on?
What characteristics would an anarchist boogeyman have?
Do anarchists have written or oral traditions of inherited fear? How would the anarchist horror story be told?

anarchists are scared by masks, good punctuation, meaningful dialog, public health measures, politeness, conviviality, interesting conversation, showers, cleaning up after themselves, ethics (most of all), limits of any kind for any purpose no matter how warranted,. . . .

...anarchists are frightened by sincerity, doubt, softness, poetry (probably more than by ethics), asking questions before jumping to conclusions, being part of a group, being alone, being wrong, kindness, empathy, thinking through the implications of the beautiful idea in a real-ass way instead of just superficially to suit short term goals.
i think you got the question
anon (not verified) Sun, 11/10/2024 - 09:19
i think you got the question reversed. anarchists are the monster story for state worshipers. it's not well to treat anarchists as a monolith bc there are so many different approaches out there. but "anarchists" can be the spook that spooks the spooked.
Tankie territory?

Monsters of the Market
Drawing on folklore, literature and popular culture, this book links tales of monstrosity from England to recent vampire- and zombie-fables from sub-Saharan Africa, and it connects these to Marx’s persistent use of monster-metaphors in his descriptions of capitalism. Reading across these tales of the grotesque, McNally offers a novel account of the cultural economy of the global market-system.
secret police of any kind

secret police of any kind (spooks, taken broadly, maybe) and madness come to mind, personally. acting too little or wrongly because of precautions against things that may or may not have any basis in my immediate reality, "losing control" in the sense of becoming not just mad or dangerous but mad and dangerous to those aspects of the basis of my life that i love (read: "my" people) out of some learned or psychogenic incapacity to distinguish between what i consider truly mine vs what ive merely borrowed from powers i despise. i find fae-like creatures when phrased as indifferent and hostile interesting in both directions, cosmic horror to a lesser extent, ghosts to a more or less real extent

"Hateful day when I received life!' I exclaimed in agony. 'Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgust? God, in pity, made man beautiful and alluring, after his own image; but my form is a filthy type of yours, more horrid even from the very resemlance. Satan had his companions, fellow-devils, to admire and encourage him; but I am solitary and abhorred."
Monsters and social death
anon (not verified) Thu, 11/14/2024 - 12:21
Here I thought this was going to be about how anarchists make our own monsters. Well, to briefly answer the prompt, these fears come from social reality and are then symbolized as monsters. As much as it’s easy to find that in fiction, it’s apparently easy to miss the production in the opposite direction: that is the real imposition of the title of monster on real people. (So much has been said about group dehumanization that I’m not sure I have anything to add. No, I have a “scene critique”, to put it mildly.)
It’s embarrassing when people who want to get rid of cops and prisons also have no problem sentencing someone to social death. This is not to suggest that individuals who act problematic should have infinite wiggle room to argue back, and I know this sort of thing has been talked to death on this site over the years, but it’s still happening, not least because what “has happened” is generally not over. Because there ought to be Something that comes after and as a rule generally there’s Nothing (“and no man needs nothing” — not cool Nothing, just someone who’s gone from fucked up to completely broken.) Did anyone even suggest anything beyond “getting therapy” (also a pretty carceral solution)? Have you ever met one of these people in the years after their cancellation? Or did you just imagine they stopped existing (that’s the whole point of social death after all)? I have… Not my stories to tell but it ain’t pretty.
Similarly I know people have gotten better at prisoner support but again I’ve seen people not get supported for various reasons through different kinds of legal/police shit (not always literal imprisonment) that really fucked up their lives; and here the “anarchist” and state practices of social death coincide; truly grim. It’s like when someone is not convenient to our romantic little adventure or idealized “community” they just disappear. Of course they don’t; they remain as an excess, a monster.
And I know people say we’ve learned from all this we wanna do better and so on but the aspect of the problem this doesn’t get at is precisely the birth of monsters and exiles (agamben considers the ban which adjudicates the homo sacer as the fundamental act of sovereignty, iirc). Humans are social. What do you think happens to someone who winds up without support (regardless what cops, anarchist scene gatekeepers, or whoever else may think they’ve done)? Isolation makes monsters (it makes anyone worse and less). Are anarchists accountable for creating our own monsters/Others, and don’t you think it eerily mirrors the dominant power structures…?
So why are people monsters? Well one because we live in hellworld and lots of other unaccountable reasons. We become anarchists often through a willed or unwilled becoming-monster to that world through radical opposition. I feel like it should bother more people to see the same primordial political act at the foundation of both worlds, both hells. I’m reminded of the picture of the burned-up cosmonaut with the generals staring down as if at something they’d given birth to, which in a sense they had… Monsters, Others, terrorists, illegals, orks, etc, are created in the same moment as the political. They are its doppelgängers or bastard children.
Note: I am old and I used to advocate for the type of stuff I’m criticizing here (so please miss me with excessively basic takes and try to engage with the heart of what I’m saying)

ok ... so apparently you're not talking about completely false accusations leading to "social death"? which is a whole thing, much discussed and tragic. AND you seem to be suggesting that whatever this hypothetical group of people are in fact, guilty of, it can't be bad enough that people don't still owe them something? is that right?
in short, no, i don't think it "mirrors the dominant power structures" because those structures are a historical aberration, built from war and slavery machines in the last few thousand years but humans have probably been saying "you're kind of a dickhead, stay away from us, we don't like you" since ever. that's highly likely to be THE most ancient and least coercive form of conflict resolution.
in fact, exile is THE ONLY alternative to the carceral system that isn't just ... killing someone in a disagreement, which was the other main way people resolved disputes. exile is quite generous compared to death and back before there were prisons and centralized legal systems, there was kind of... only the two? this is of course, after negotiation fails because one or both parties are completely beyond discussion, sometimes for very good reasons
anyway, obviously most conflicts aren't serious enough and death or exile is way too excessive a punishment but after a couple decades of watching conflicts play out, i'm permanently wary of anyone who always merges their apologies or admissions of guilt and responsibility with a set of demands. maybe they should count themselves lucky that people are generous enough to just leave them alone?
this kind of thing offered

this kind of thing offered essentially in abstract, which isnt to say i dont see "the heart" of it, always makes me think of the song "katie cruel." my favorite recorded version is karen dalton's, but linda thompson has a good one too and im sure theres about a million other better ones that happened here and there or whatever. both express a resentment over this kind of thing with a distinct impression of keeping on going or dancing in defiance of not just those people who have turned you out but the entire existential order within which it all went down ("if i was where i would be, then i'd be where i am not, here am i where i must be, where i would be i cannot"). nick cave's "when i first came to town" is a version that seems to strike more towards revenge and proof of quality of some kind or another. for me, when i lost most of my social basis in my mid 20s due to bad behavior of various kinds, i figured that was fair play given that it was people i loved to one degree or another making the call and not cops or some jury of my peers or whatever. i thought about it a lot and decided that some of it was the kind of reckless shit about myself that i find a great deal of joy and affirmation in, and some of it was a failure on my part to appreciate things about myself and my loved ones that resulted ultimately in violence. so i tried to embrace the former more emphatically and take the latter as a sign that my perspective was not as clear-eyed as i thought it was, and start over. i don't think there's an easy answer here for anyone, especially when the 'exile' that lumpy mentions in the other comment is, as it seems to me to be for everyone who is displaced one way or another, an exile to nowhere. the logic of it follows you, it becomes who you are in a way. but i think the way is to do something with it anyway, to go through it, rather than to look back and demand revenge, redemption, or some kind of cure. i am not interested, as lenin and whoever that founding father was (madison? idc) accused anti-authoritarians of being, interested in waiting on a world of changed people or "better angels." i would think the idea would be to spin out in more directions, wherever possible, check oneself on or at least revisit, maybe read a bit about, those behaviors that caused ones loved ones to say fuck off. being "exiled" should be a strength in a society in which so many are forced into or find themselves desiring it romantically or morally or simply out of spite or whatever. it should be a way for people to forge new ways of being outside of whatever it is you used to be in on, and find people on a similar wavelength. but thats on whoever youre talking about to do or decide
Anarchists are haunted by the

Anarchists are haunted by the Curse of Cassandra. Screaming prophecy into the void. Pulling their hairs out about... voting, civilization, Leninists, grad students, gentrification, biodiversity loss, birth control, other anarchists, &c.
Just to end up like Hal Incandenza instead. Pleading the case in what we think is rational language and tone, but only interpreted by others as nonsensical guttural animal grunting.

jokes on you, i'm completely bald so ha!
j/k, you're probably right
to your point: i read a story about a therapist who's attempting to reconcile a mother and daughter. after half a dozen other sessions, the daughter concludes the final session with "so because you won't listen or invalidate anything and everything i say, i never want to see you again."
the mother starts on about how unfair that is to say she never listens, she's here isn't she? she's listening right now! the kid is too harsh, making a big deal out of small things, she's always so dramatic and sensitive, blah blah blah, on and on
the therapist eventually interrupts her - "did... did you hear what she said? she never wants to see you again."
the mother is aghast "WHAT?! But ... how could she even say that? She can't! You can't! This is outrageous!" etc
she continues to babble as her daughter walks out of the room forever. she actually didn't hear. she had no idea what her daughter had just said until the therapist repeated it for her. true story!
so is Hal actually grunting nonsense or are we underestimating just how fucked up people's listening is?

I am haunted (and taunted) by and for the conditioning I endured under my parents. I am an anarchist, despite my aversion and disgust at the sight of 2 bearded men passionately kissing. This isn't my problem, this monstrous attitude instilled into my psyche by narrow minded dictators, but it is something I must live with, this hideous moral attitude forced upon my conscience. Do not cancel me from the anarchist milieu, I would do nothing to harm or seperate lovers of any gender.
