It’s never safe to pit yourself against the power of the state. Even less so when the state deifies its leader as a living god.
That’s exactly what Kaneko Fumiko (1903-1926) did. Kaneko was born so far outside of Japan’s system that her birth officially didn’t even exist. After enduring years of brutalization, she spent the remainder of her life cursing and defying Japan’s imperial system. She hated the emperor so much that she spat his offer of clemency back in his face.

At this point I must make my final statement. As for the decision and my own sentence, I cannot say that I was surprised. After 15 years in the anarchist movement, vindictiveness and severity have come to be expected in the face of fighters, both male and female, who either choose revolutionary armed non-violence or actively stand alongside them, assisting and helping them.

A few days ago, one of my comrades sent me a relatively old text (https://t.me/stupidisthenewcool/1001) criticizing the statement by Russian anarchists on the war in Ukraine and the exclusion of Belarusian and Ukrainian comrades from public events in the “West”[1]. Most of the text is a perfectly adequate critique of the statement, but one thing struck me and made me sit down to write this text.

Distinct from other socialist schools of thought, anarchism asserts that it’s vehemently opposed to all coercive hierarchies as they exist in every aspect of life. Whereas the marxists primarily aims to abolish economic exploitation and destroy the capitalist mode of production, the revolutionary feminists strive to dismantle male domination and eradicate cis-hetero patriarchy, and the post-colonial insurgent seeks to end settler colonialism and imperialist interventions on dispossessed lands, the anarchist primarily begins with the position that all systems of oppression and pyramidal power structures are a threat and the antithesis to the total liberation of all marginalized, poor, and working class people—regardless of race, gender, and sexuality.
Recent prosecutions associated with Prairieland and similar cases did not rest upon the discovery of hidden command structures, secret directives, or an underground organization issuing orders from behind the scenes. Prosecutors assembled communications, publications, transportation records, political affiliations, support networks, organizational practices, and ongoing associations between individuals. Signal chats appeared in the record. Vetting procedures appeared in the record. Public events, articles, zines, fundraising efforts, support infrastructure, and statements concerning political activity appeared in the record. Material familiar to nearly anyone active within contemporary anarchist circles entered the courtroom and acquired an entirely different meaning.

Of all the questions dividing anarchists and other libertarian socialists, perhaps the most contentious is that of national self-determination. In recent years this has become a particularly fraught issue with the resistance of the Palestinians to Israeli domination, and, even more, the defensive war of the Ukrainians against the Russian state’s invasion. The question became even more immediate with the U.S./Israeli assault on Iran. Many deny that anarchists can support the efforts of oppressed peoples for independence from imperialist domination.

On Tuesday, June 16, in Rome and other cities, new police raids hit the anarchist movement, with seven arrest warrants against as many comrades, 5 preventive detentions in prison and 2 house arrests with electronic bracelets, searches throughout Italy (including La Vampa in Naples), and the eviction of the Bencivenga Occupato social center in Rome. The main charge is the now classic “association for terrorist purposes” (270-bis). In addition, two comrades were arrested for the new crime of “terrorism by words” for possession of some pamphlets found during the searches.
