As Donald Trump and Elon Musk subordinate the United States government to their pursuit of totalitarian power, their opponents remain in a defensive posture, accusing them of lawlessness. But neither courts nor laws will halt the descent into autocracy. Massive numbers of people will have to take it upon themselves to organize concrete acts of resistance, to take direct action on a horizontal and participatory basis—in other words, to become anarchists.
From Anarchist Agency
Murphy Hoopes, an early collective member of Agency, who helped launch our organization in 2013, passed away in San Diego, California on January 18, 2025. He was 38. Born and raised in the Washington D.C. area, Murphy was drawn to the possibilities of a new world at an early age. In high school, he joined D.C. Food Not Bombs, cooking and serving vegan food to the hungry while protesting US aggression in Iraq. His generous spirit and cooperative nature continued through a lifetime of support for social and environmental struggles, and myriad contributions to the global anarchist movement. Immersed in the punk rock community, Murphy was deeply passionate about music and the power of counterculture and creative expression to build stronger communities and make social change.
From It's Going Down
10 years ago a group of people set out to create a new media platform to document and give voice to autonomous social movements happening across so-called North America. It’s Going Down (IGD) has had an impact and audience beyond what many of us thought was possible, and we’re proud of the work that we’ve done over the past ten years.

Anarchist Response to Hurricane Helene
At the end of September 2024, western North Carolina and the surrounding states experienced 30 inches of rainfall over two days when an unnamed storm collided with Hurricane Helene over the mountains of Southern Appalachia. The resulting catastrophe laid waste to the entire region. At a time when misinformation, rising authoritarianism, and disasters exacerbated by industrially-produced climate change are creating a feedback loop of escalating crisis, it’s crucial to understand disaster response as an integral part of community defense and strategize about how this can play a part in movements for liberation. In the following reflection, a local anarchist involved in longstanding disaster response efforts in Appalachia recounts the lessons that they have learned over the past six weeks and offers advice about how to prepare for the disasters to come.
