Rest in Power, Murphy Hoopes (1987-2025)

From Anarchist Agency

Murphy Hoopes, an early collective member of Agency, who helped launch our organization in 2013, passed away in San Diego, California on January 18, 2025. He was 38. Born and raised in the Washington D.C. area, Murphy was drawn to the possibilities of a new world at an early age. In high school, he joined D.C. Food Not Bombs, cooking and serving vegan food to the hungry while protesting US aggression in Iraq. His generous spirit and cooperative nature continued through a lifetime of support for social and environmental struggles, and myriad contributions to the global anarchist movement. Immersed in the punk rock community, Murphy was deeply passionate about music and the power of counterculture and creative expression to build stronger communities and make social change.

Understanding the Modern State

from Anarchist Agency

an Interview with Eric Laursen

Agency: Your recently published book The Operating System: An Anarchist Theory of the Modern State. Why the State? What inspired you to tackle such a monumental subject at this time? Eric Laursen: Mainly the fact that it hasn’t really been done before. I’ve identified as an anarchist for just about my entire adult life, and early on, I was struck by the fact that the so-called “classic” anarchists – Kropotkin, Bakunin, Goldman, etc – never analyzed in an extended way what the State was.

Why Anarchism is Dangerous

via Anarchist Agency

By Dana Ward and Paul Messersmith-Glavin

Anarchists frighten privileged elites and their authoritarian followers not simply because the primary goals of the movement have been to abolish the sources of elite power – the state, patriarchy, and capitalism – but because anarchism offers a viable alternative form of social and political organization grounded in workplace collectives, neighborhood assemblies, bottom-up federations, child-centered free schools, and a variety of cultural organizations operating on the basis of cooperation, solidarity, mutual aid, and direct, participatory democracy.
