The Southwest stands as both a crucible and a casualty of empire, a scorched frontier where settler colonialism, capitalist extraction, and technological “progress” converge in ritual violence against land and against life. From greenwashed data centers to uranium and copper mines polluting Indigenous lands, the region reflects the on going violence empire relies on in order to survive.

This gathering is an invocation, a space to trace the lines of power and extraction, and imagine insurgent ecologies beyond the machinery of civilization.

While LA fought off ICE raids in June, Tucson remained mostly quiet. There were the appropriate outraged lectures on social media and “peaceful” demonstrations outside the federal building, with plenty of organizer back-patting afterwards, but little material result. Although there had been small indicators of disenchantment and a desire for more, including some tense rapid response callouts and a demo at a hospital which had allegedly called ICE on a patient that ended in a brief standoff with the police, this energy had not yet found any meaningful outlet. Until the flyer appeared.

In an effort to try and subvert existing structures, the homies in Phoenix have been trying to open a sort of third space in the greater-Phoenix area. This space will be used as a way to create, destroy, learn, unlearn, play, anti-work, and explore with one another. Phoenix lacks the kind of meaningful gathering space that we envision and, rather than whining continually about the declining Cool People scene in the area, we’re just gonna do it ourselves.

In the spring of 2004 my partner and I went to an anti-war demonstration near the campus of the University of Arizona. It was perfectly legal, “permitted,” so long as we stayed crowded onto the sidewalks by the cops, who seemed to outnumber us. We were not permitted to step into the streets. One of the speakers screamed at the cops for a very long time in a very shrill voice. It was a demonstration, all right--a demonstration of impotence.

We are excited to announce the 2024 Indigenous Anarchist Convergence, taking place in O’odham Jeved, aka “Phoenix, Arizona”.
Join us this November, the week of No Thanks No Giving, for a claws-out, anti-colonial gathering to deepen our affinities towards total liberation and to show that Indigenous people are an unstoppable threat to settler society and colonialism as a whole.
Strategic Impasse in the Phoenix Valley
A critical reflection on the recent round of protests in Phoenix, Arizona in the wake of the Supreme Court decision rolling back Roe V Wade and attempts by various Left groups and non-profits to contain popular anger and action.
from It's Going Down
