TOTW: The anarchist campsite

TOTW: The anarchist campsite

Topic of the week – Earlier this summer the Anarchy 2023 festival in St. Imier took place with photos of hundreds of tents pitched and anarchists camping out together. While the festival in St. Imier had a much larger focus than just coming together to go camping, over the years these events where anarchists make a camp together to just hang out, have conversations with new and old friends, and spend time together seem to have become less common while events like bookfairs have taken center stage for the anarchist meetup. This week we’re sitting down at the ANews communal fire pit to share our thoughts on the anarchist campsite.

Boycott of new book on history of anarchism in netherlands

From Het Fort van Sjakoo

We received an announcement in early January 2023 from Arend Hazekamp, also known by the first name Arie, of the book he has written on the anarchist movement in the northern three provinces (Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen), to be published in April 2024, entitled Kindred spirits of Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis: Free Socialism in Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe 1890-1940. Normally, such a book would, of course, immediately find a place in our bookshop. However, there is a serious problem with this author.

TOTW: Occupy 10 years later

Shock-u-py and Awe-cu-py

Around 10 years ago the first Occupy protest to grab large public attention began on September 17, 2011 in Zuccotti Park, New York City. By October, Occupy had setup camp in over 951 cities across 82 different countries, and over 600 spots in the USA. By the end of 2011 and not far into 2012 most of the Occupy spaces had been cleared by the authorities. This week, we’re taking a look back and into the future of Occupy ideas.
