Zapatista Autonomy: Interview with an anarchist comrade

From Freedom News

Last month, we posted the English translation of the Zapatista communique outlining the new autonomy structure and an interview with Bill Weinberg, who has written about the movement. We now publish replies to the same questions we put to Bill from an anonymous anarchist comrade with long-term involvement in Chiapas.

Socialism is Anarchist if you squint

Strange indeed...

from Strange Opinions by Ecks D. Essay

Authoritarian creep, libertarian socialism, & democratic planning

Socialism isn’t when the government does things or owns things. It’s not a form of tyranny that tries to force everyone at gunpoint to become identical worker drones and follow the commands of some bureaucrat’s central plan. It’s not even the tepid, watered-down welfarist reforms that ex D.S.A. members like myself are trying and failing to pass, bless their heart. Rather, socialism was and remains a vision of a world where ordinary working people are in charge of the production and investment decisions that affect them – in their workplaces, neighborhoods, cities, and beyond – and manage the economy democratically to meet everyone’s needs. It's much like what we have now, except somehow eluding all the undesirable consequences and implications that currently affect us.
