Anarchism and Cryptocurrency

civ is a scam

From C4$$ by Rai Ling

Cryptocurrency, a digital currency in which transactions are verified and recorded by a decentralized system using cryptography, rather than by a centralized authority, is a controversial technology amongst anarchists, even though it is often used as a tool for undermining state power. The left generally sees cryptocurrency as a negative due to its function as money (which some seek to abolish), volatility, ostensible harm to the environment, alleged lack of decentralization, scams, and association with right-libertarianism, which have resulted in many left-leaning anarchists irrationally lashing out against crypto.

Tux Pacific isn’t your average tech founder. They’re a self-taught cryptographer who dropped out of college, a proud member of and advocate for the transgender community and a self-described anti-capitalist anarchist who believes in free-market principles deeply rooted in the early days of crypto, when Bitcoin reigned supreme and banks had no interest in the sector.

Technical discourse almost always generates an odd sort of distortion when it collides with life outside of disciplinary separations. This is very much the case when it comes to radicals and information security. Communications, computer science and cryptography are highly complex, to the point that even people working in the security industry full time have difficulty grasping the complexities from time to time. As we saw with the Snowden leaks, the combination of highly complex technical content and the possibility of danger in the form of surveillance, tended to generate a discourse grounded in hyperbole and conspiracizing. This approach often led people to either attempt to completely go dark, or to modify their practices base on false, misconstrued or misunderstood information.

We’re astonished at the proliferation of ridiculous distortions of the imaginary of the Net like crypto-coins and NFTs, or vaporware ideas like Web3 and the metaverse. Speculations that demonstrate how capitalism is the underlying issue, infiltrating our lives, replicating its disfunctionalities. But this greed is built on nothing. Through all this, we keep offering tools to those who want to fight, those who are not resigned, who want to resist, and who want to build something.

One of the strongest critiques of anarchism (or consequentialism) I’ve heard (often from former anarchists no less) is that it’s too hard. And maybe it is. Hard problems don’t have Solutions in pure form. They have scales of tradeoffs and inventiveness at the margins. Your best hope with hard collective action problems is usually that prosocial tactics and incentive structures proliferate rapidly in a cascade of concurrent action. But at the end of the day, if you try to change anything in this fucked world, you will have dirty hands.

Friction Statement

From The Crypto Liberationist, at the intersection of anarchism & emerging financial technology

Introduction: What to Wear to a Fire Sale

We’ll take as a starting point that the current financial system is flailing. The dollar–that symbol par excellence of the USA’s projection of global power– is going the way of Rome’s old money; it will have less and less clout as the empire backing it declines. It’s been a neat trick that the global financial system, so dependent on US hegemony, has survived this long (and, as its defenders enthuse–with such resilience!) But to take a real look at the world? Post-Covid, post-Trump, post-summer-of-protests? Nothing has been solved; all of the problems exposed over the past year remain and are indeed intensifying. Headaches for the poor, headaches for the rich, a useless ibuprofen for everyone.

Announcing the Crypto Liberationist

What about liberation from cryptomining?

From: www.cryptoliberation.wordpress.com

February 23rd, 2021: Today we are pleased to announce the launch of a new media project at the intersection of anarchism and emerging financial technologies. Rather than providing technical dissection of prices and markets, our writers focus on a *social analysis* of the digital money revolution currently underway. We came into crypto with an anti-capitalist perspective and find no contradiction in continuing to hold space for those beliefs within the broader online community: a task made more urgent against a backdrop of economic turmoil and authoritarian drift.
