EXARCHEIA, Athens – On a summer day in Athens, tourists and locals alike can be found in Kolonaki, one of Athens’ most affluent neighborhoods, sipping on cappuccinos, chatting with friends, or leisurely walking alongside the most expensive stores in the city. Few ever leave to go to Exarcheia, a neighborhood that is a mere five-minute walk away.

“No Justice, No Peace” was the absolute essence of the protest -that few hours later turned into a fierce riot- on Wednesday 31 July 2019 at Exarchia in Athens, following the news on the previous day that E. Korkoneas, the policeman who shot and murdered 15 years old Alexis Grigoropoulos in Athens, Greece on 6 December 2008, was released out of prison after 10 years.

On Wednesday, 24.07, anarchist comrades Christos and Gerasimos Tsakalos, members of the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire were released. The comrades were originally convicted with sentences of over 70 years, which were reduced to 20. The comrades made use of the Paraskevopoulos law that was introduced by the previous SYRIZA-led government and were released after having served 8 years of their 20 year sentences.

Anarchist Comrade Nikos Romanos Released from Prison in Greece

Anarchist comrade Nikos Romanos was released from prison in Greece yesterday after six years of imprisonment.

Nikos was a close friend of Alexis Grigoropoulos, an anarchist teenager who was murdered in Exarcheia by the police in 2008, sparking the Greek anarchist insurrection.

Nikos Romanos was arrested in February 2013 with 3 more people and charged with attempted armed robbery at the Agricultural Bank and TT Hellenic Postbank in Velvento, Kozani.
