From In Contempt #5
We return, our hearts inflamed for our companions in struggle enduring the worst of state repression, with the latest In Contempt, a roundup of repression news, political prisoner updates, and prisoner rebellions. While repression may be inevitable for any movement for freedom, the future of the prison world is not. Until the day the cages are empty and the prisons are ashes, we must support those fighting inside for freedom.
From Act for Freedom Now by Dimitris Chatzivasiliadis (Greece)
Since the 2nd of November, a rolling collective hunger strike has been taking place in British prisons against the UK’s involvement in the colonial war in Palestine and the crackdown on the Palestine Action organisation. Thirty-three prisoners have committed themselves in advance, Amu Gib and Qesser Zuhrah were the first to start, and gradually the number of strikers is increasing. The struggle inside the prisons has already gone international, with the participation of comrades Massimo Passamani and Luca Dolce (Italy).

Italian Anarchist Massimo Passamani Solidarity With Hunger Strike
In the twilight zone of sorts I find myself in- neither free nor fully imprisoned – I have decided to give up my daily work release from prison for the next week, as a gesture of solidarity with the Palestine Action comrades on hunger strike in British prisons, a strike my friend and brother Stecco has also joined. I know that my staying in prison instead of going to work will not bother the prison administration in the least. But my message is not addressed to prison management – whom I have nothing to say to and nothing to ask of but to those who are fighting against the genocide of the Palestinian people, alongside its indomitable resistance.

In response to the blatant violation of my rights, I am going on hunger strike as of today (14/5/2024) with a request to be transferred to the hospital of Lamia without suffering the humiliating way of investigation demanded by the external guard of Domokos prison.

As I enjoy my freedom again, won through my second hunger and thirst strike, I reflect on the complex historical mosaic that not only shaped my personal choices but also wove the collective struggle against the state-capitalism complex. Far from being solitary acts of assertion, the hunger strikes were instead part of the social antagonism within the complex dynamics taking shape in Greece and the global landscape as the assault of the dominant powers deepens.

Giannis Michailidis – announcement for the end of the hunger and thirst strike.
As I complete a cycle of struggles for my release, I feel the need to express my gratitude to those people who fought hard for it all the time in and out of prisons.
The positive outcome of this battle is due to those who have experienced the consequences of repression, to the wider solidarity stream created, to the prisoners who chose to fight with the same means of hunger or thirst strike at my side. But the decisive contribution to every hunger strike belongs to those who suffered, were exterminated, murdered or maimed fighting with this means of struggle. To these people I owe my freedom.
