Much of John’s life from 1975 to 1990 revolved around the Anarchist movement in Sydney. His experience in the short-lived Federation of Australian Anarchists cemented in him a determination to do Anarchism differently. Accordingly, in 1977 he was a founding member of Jura Books, now Sydney’s longest running Anarchist bookshop. Differences within the collective led to a split in 1982, with John amongst those leaving to establish the Redfern Black Rose Anarchist Bookshop. Out of those experiences, John learnt much about working with people in a collective and egalitarian way.

Over the last four years, anarchist communist groups have been founded in both major and regional cities. Members of these groups have led strikes, organised protests and pickets, and played foundational roles in new organisations of class struggle. Workers’ self-organisation and class struggle, the founding elements of the anarchist tendency within the socialist movement, have been restored to the centre of our politics.

I recently learned that a local (Naarm) anarchist called ‘Pope Fred’ has died. I’ve no doubt others will have reflections, but to mark his passing from this realm to the next, it seemed appropriate to make a blogpost.

Statement from the Melbourne Anarchist Communist Group about the announcement of the AUKUS partnership. Released 26 September 2021.
The AUKUS partnership announced on 16 September is a big step towards war against China. The centrepiece of its first initiative is the announcement by the Australian Government that it will buy eight nuclear submarines from the United States or the United Kingdom. The reactions to this announcement are almost as significant as the purchase of the submarines themselves.
