On April 20 2017, about ten of us went to the east slope of Mount Royal with zines and a banner. The zine, which we had put together in a bit of a rush just a few days before, was entitled Dank Anarchy —a joke and a working title that just never got changed. The banner said FUCK JUSTIN TRUDEAU. Our intention was to distribute the zine, display our banner, and finally, just hang out and have a good time.
I smoked weed for the first time under a starry sky in deep woods down east. It was at a party, all teenagers, at the cabin someone’s mom owned. It was the summer before my last year in high school. It was Jesse who passed it to me, helped me light it, talked me through my first coughing fit, passed it to me again, then said nothing but positive things for me – nothing shitty, nothing implying that I had been immature up to this point for not having done it sooner. Obviously there is a lot of hierarchy and cockfighting in high school, but Jesse was never like that.
Here’s an idea: a zine, well laid out and readable in an afternoon, with a funny picture on the front of it and a few varied articles inside; a day in late April, hopefully not too rainy, and a bunch of people gathered in a park or a public square; anarchists, normal-looking or otherwise, and maybe with a solid chemical excuse for not being able to articulate their ideas in plain words.
