EZLN breaks silence

Although plenty of anarchists have their reservations when it comes to the Zapatistas, few can argue that their position has been an important in influential one when it comes to antiauthoritarian, anticapitalist politics. Their general command has remained silent for quite some time, but Dec 21st marked an end to that. Their message is brief, making use of Mayan poetic style and indicates a note of optimism. On the same day 6-10,000 Zapatistas marched silently through 6 Chiapas cities and towns; those which they had taken by force of arms in 1994.

21 December 2012

To whom it may concern

DID YOU HEAR?

It is the sound of their world collapsing.

It is that of ours rising anew.

The day that was the day, used to be night.

And night will be the day, that will be the day.

Democracy!

Freedom!

Justice!

From the Mountains of the Mexican Southeast.

"And we want to tell the Latin American peoples that we are proud to be a part of you, even if it is a small part. We remember quite well how the continent was also illuminated some years ago, and a light was called Che Guevara, as it had previously been called Bolivar, because sometimes the people take up a name in order to say they are taking up a flag."

"So the neoliberals want to kill Mexico, our Mexican Patria. "

-From the Sixth Declaration of the Selva Lacandona

Beautiful words for the freedom fighters Che and Bolivar. Marxists and revolutionaries everywhere should remember the price paid by Che for the liberated and autonomous society of Cuba.
Continue the fight for your beautiful nation, Zapatistas. May Mexico be strong one day.

I was almost trolled, but then I saw the username.

In before the tro- ... dammit

Hey Everybody, its Andrej Grubacic's Scarf.

Check out this great video ! Its 50 % Anarchist, 50 % IWW/Wobblie, and 100% Kick Ass !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjPJmwx9Jd0

Wobblie Zapatista must equal commie zombie.
Do you recall Che's execution of smallholders growing pot? Do you love
the always authoritarian marxist-leninist template of Cuban state power??
Get a fucking clue.
The leftism and nationalism of the EZLN of course set off no alarm with you.
Unless your comment was meant as parody...
(Unless wobblie has always meant clueless leftism)

Please list actual examples of the EZLNs "leftism and nationalism". I don't mean things that they have said which you have interpreted thusly. I mean actual leftist/nationalist things that they have done

Read any of their shit. They talk about Mexico as 'their country' in a positive way.

Wildcat also pointed out: "At the beginning, in response to government allegations of foreign influence, the Zapatistas strenuously denied that any Guatemalan Maya Indians were involved. In other words, the Zapatistas' Maya indigenism is subordinate to their Mexican nationalism, which is passionately expressed in many of their writings. In contrast, the bosses have no country. "

In response to Feral Faun's critique of them some zapatistas sent this in to green anarchy: http://plaincracker.tumblr.com/post/5647609279/a-zapatista-response-to-t...

"What we all have in common is a love for our families and our homelands. What we all have in common is a desire to make things better for ourselves and our country."

Yep... just words. Ok cool. Just wanted to clear that up.

El día que fue el día, era noche. Y noche será el día que será el día.

The day that was the day, was night. And night will be the day that will be the day.

what is it that is ‘inverting’ of which the EZLN are now so confidently speaking?

there is a marked resemblance to the biblical; ‘the humble shall inherit the earth’ [at the end of the world]. and similarly in the ‘gospel of thomas’;

“Jesus said to them, "When you make the two one, and when you make the inside like the outside and the outside like the inside, and the above like the below, and when you make the male and the female one and the same, so that the male not be male nor the female female; and when you fashion eyes in the place of an eye, and a hand in place of a hand, and a foot in place of a foot, and a likeness in place of a likeness; then will you enter [the Kingdom]."

the same implicit prediction can be found in nietzsche and in mach and shroedinger. the prediction associates with the non-dualist understanding of the world that is foundational in modern physics that is poised to overtake the prevailing dualist worldview institutionalized in the western culture.

in the worldview of mach et al, space is relational and thus change is ‘transformation’. creation and destruction are conjugate aspects of the one dynamic of ‘transformation’ of relational space. creating a new city is, at the same time, destroying some forest or arable land. there is no two ways about it. transformation is what is going on.

western civilization has institutionalized a view of dynamics in which causal creation is judged ‘good’ and ‘causal destruction’ is judged ‘bad’. the destructive aspect of ‘causal creation’ is ignored in popular western thinking and linguistic discourse. it is enough to speak of ‘constructing the new city’ and to judge this a ‘good thing’. [as nietzsche has pointed out, causality invents a 'subject' and implies 'intention' on the part of the 'subject' or 'causal agent' so we see 'causal results' in the constrained terms of 'what the subject intended'].

people and nations are, in this western dualist view of change, ranked on a scale of ‘goodness’ on the basis of their ‘causal creative achievements’. the destructive aspect is ignored. the sovereign states rank themselves in the same way, those with the greatest ‘causal creative achievements’ are judged ‘superior’ to those with lesser ‘causal creative achievements’ [aboriginals and zapatistas do not even quality for the competition since they acknowledge that change is transformation and that creation and destruction are inherently in conjugate relation]. of course those sovereign states with the greatest causal creative achievements are the richest and the most powerful, and they judge themselves to be ‘the best’ since ‘causal creative accomplishment’ is ‘good’ and they ‘do more of it’ than the other sovereign states. and, therefore, they give themselves ‘veto’ powers in the council of the world’s nations because, according to their values and judgement, ‘they are the best’ exemplars of ‘causal creative accomplishment’, notionally by way of ‘what they as things-in-themselves are doing’. of course, the common relational space that everyone shares inclusion in [including the under trodden within it] is being raped because of the one-sided values of western civilization wherein the destructive aspect is ignored in the western way of ‘scoring’ the value of change.

the ranking of people is thus exposed to imminent inversion, as the dualist worldview and values gives way to the non-dualist worldview and values.

this is based on physics and philosophy, but it echoes the biblical prophecy that the end of the world [as we non-savages know it?] will be marked by ‘the humble inheriting the earth’, and the gospel of thomas and other old writings that prophecy the subsumation of dualism with non-dualism;

“When you make the two one, and when you make the inside like the outside and the outside like the inside, and the above like the below, and when you make the male and the female one and the same, so that the male not be male nor the female female;”

the EZLN, which rides on the worldview rootstock of aboriginal [mayan] belief traditions has been non-dualist from the get-go and apparently ‘reads’ the goings on in the world as indicative of what fritjof capra, for example [another ‘nondualist’ philosopher of science who sees change as the transformation of relational space], calls ‘the turning point’ [which he takes from the tao te ching, hexagram 24, Fu, the ‘turning point’]

“The most important characteristic of the Eastern world view - one could almost say the essence of it - is the awareness of the unity and mutual interrelation of all things and events, the experience of all phenomena in the world as manifestations of a basic oneness. All things are seen as interdependent and inseparable parts of this cosmic whole; as different manifestations of the same ultimate reality. The Eastern mystics see the universe as an inseparable web, whose interconnections are dynamic and not static. The cosmic web is alive; it moves and grows and changes continually. Modern physics, too, has come to conceive of the universe as such a web of relations and, like Eastern mysticism, has recognised that this web is intrinsically dynamic. The dynamic aspect of matter arises in quantum theory as a consequence of the wave-nature of subatomic particles, and is even more essential in relativity theory, where the unification of space and time implies that the being of matter cannot be separated from its activity. The properties of subatomic particles can therefore only be understood in a dynamic context; in terms of movement, interaction and transformation.”” ---Fritjof Capra, The Tao of Physics

hexagram 24, Fu [relative of FU?] says;

“The idea of a turning point arises from the fact that after the dark lines have pushed all of the light lines upward and out of the hexagram, another light line enters the hexagram from below. The time of darkness is past. The winter solstice brings the victory of light. This hexagram is linked with the eleventh month, the month of the solstice (December-January). After a time of decay comes the turning point. The powerful light that has been banished returns. There is movement, but it is not brought about by force. The upper trigram K'un is characterized by devotion; thus the movement is natural, arising spontaneously. For this reason the transformation of the old becomes easy. The old is discarded and the new is introduced. Both measures accord with the time; therefore no harm results. Societies of people sharing the same views are formed. But since these groups come together in full public knowledge and are in harmony with the time, all selfish separatist tendencies are excluded, and no mistake is made. The idea of RETURN is based on the course of nature. The movement is cyclic, and the course completes itself. Therefore it is not necessary to hasten anything artificially. Everything comes of itself at the appointed time. This is the meaning of heaven and earth.”---tao te ching

the prophecies may be ‘non-scientific’ but the claim by several of the most respected philosophers of the modern era is that we live in a continually transforming relational space. this worldview is a non-dualist worldview that requires BOTH/AND logic sitting on top of dualist western civilization’s default EITHER/OR logic, and which subsumes the dualist worldview that splits apart the inhabitants [organizings] from the habitat [Organizing] thanks to the mental invoking of an absolute space and absolute time reference frame. Mach, Poincaré, Nietzsche, Bohm, Capra and Schrödinger, nondualists all, are not saying ‘when exactly’ scientific thinking people are going to let their dualist worldviews be subsumed by a nondualist worldview of a transforming relational space, but they are saying that our natural experience supports the nondualist view while the dualist view is putting us at odds with our own natural experience. for example, is it not the greatest stupidity to split apart the construction of a new city from the destruction/loss of forest and/or arable land, and to characterize this ‘causal creative achievement’ as ‘physically real’, meaning that the physical reality of ‘transformation of relational space’ is denied? how long do we keep up the denial? ... until we have covered the entire terrestrial surface of the globe with our beautiful, anthropo-aesthetic constructions, gutting the natural beauty that was there in the process?

the EZLN’s reading is that the ‘turning point’ is here and that we are swinging into the phase reversal where the dominating western values are going to be turned upside-down.

%100 pure real hecka anarchist-ass anarchists:

Do a pretty good job of never using marxist/nationalist language. Not quite sure if "identity politics" are worth taking into consideration. Able to sometimes smash windows without getting caught. Generally cannot keep dishes in our own houses clean. Generally cannot keep houses. Generally cannot successfully implement non-hierarchical decision making processes with more than about 4 people. Try to stop logging with tree-sits. Actively create "collective" (capitalist) coffee shops as our most visible economic "alternatives." SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!! GOOD JOB!!!

Zapatistas:

Sometimes talk positively about past marxists, use national language. Hate political parties as such, were instrumental in a stupid liberal (AMLO) not getting elected. Successfully facilitated thousands of towns and villages coming to consensus to wage war. Fought combined US/Mexican military forces. Evaded annihilation. Captured and held large quanities of land. Stop forest destruction with armed barricades. Actually use traditional, non-capitalist, non-workerist, egalitarian indigenous economic/decision making processes, successfully.
BOOOO. COMMIEZ!

Yes, ideological purity sure has its advantages. That's why we so clearly excel at kicking ass.

This comment wins the prize.

Indigenous liberation movements in developing countries really need to learn to check with privileged first-world ideologues before they make statements. How else will we fight racism and imperialism?

First-world radicals should refrain from offering their own ideas and criticisms out of guilt for their privilege, because that would definitely not be patronizing.

Hahaha. What serious criticism has been offered? What serious criticism is there to offer? First world radicals have trolled them by putting their words in "scare quotes". Is that a legitimate critique in your mind?

They are a national liberation army. To simply critique their conception of the nation (which I would bet 1,000 volunteer hours at any shitty anarchist coffee shop is much more complex and nuanced than you realize) is like critiquing the IRA for being "all about Ireland". If you or anyone wants to offer a substantial critique of the specific techniques that they use, I'd be curious to hear it. Otherwise it's just as simple as you not liking them, which I doubt anybody really has any interest in hearing about.

which I'm not sure if that's totally true given that Marcos still gets on the radio and in Chiapas every so often, it's not like the Zapatistas are silent. There have been some pretty nasty paramilitary attacks on some of their communities, and many of their councils of good government have been issuing statements about the attacks. One community was forced to relocate and they renamed themselves "Commandante Abel." Some info on that: http://dorsetchiapassolidarity.wordpress.com/2012/09/14/paramilitary-att...

Also, in case people don't know, Zapatistas (I can't say all of them, I'm not sure) are Mayan, or of Mayan descent--I'm just not sure exactly what they consider themselves and I wonder if that doesn't change from person to person or community to community.

And here are some pictures of the marches, incredible:
http://dorsetchiapassolidarity.wordpress.com/2012/12/23/21st-december-20...

oops, i messed up that comment. i meant to start it "even though the EZLN may be quieter than it used to be"

Yeah they consider their civilian organizations and military organization to be separate. The civilian groups release statements on a regular basis. The EZLN itself (a military formation) hasn't released any official statements in over a year, I believe, even if Marcos sometimes speaks as an individual. And yeah, vast majority be Mayan.

Yeah. One other thing- it was closer to 50,000 people marching, apparently. look: http://roarmag.org/2012/12/zapatistas-march-chiapas-mayas/

look at what?

the pictures! they're great

Its always good to see Marxists put down the gun and start running for office. Marx, himself said in 1872 that the workers could get everything they wanted through parliamentary imbecility and cretinism! ( at the Hague )

What in the world are you droning on about? Who's running for office?
