Inside Anarchism in Sudan: An interview with Fawaz

From The Dugout by Jordan and Prince Shakur (English and Arabic)

This week on The Dugout, we speak with Fawaz, a Sudanese anarchist organizer, about building resistance in the face of dictatorship, war, and repression. From organizing underground student circles after the 2018–2019 uprising to going public as anarchists in 2020, Fawaz shares how youth movements in Sudan are rejecting military, religious, and tribal authoritarianism—and planting the seeds of mutual aid and collective care. We discuss the legacy of colonialism, the dangers of organizing under surveillance, and the everyday realities of fighting for freedom.

Campaign: Help Buy a Printing Press for Anarchists in Sudan

From Black Rose Anarchist Federation

Since February 2022 Black Rose/Rosa Negra (BRRN) and other members of our international network of anarchist political organizations have been collaborating with the Sudan Anarchist Federation (SAF), which started organizing shortly before the revolutionary upheavals that began in 2018. Thanks to the many comrades who donated to our previous fundraiser, we were able to support some SAF comrades to escape dangerous situations and continue their work, both inside and outside the country. Tragically, at least one comrade, Sarah, was lost to the murderous and femicidal deprivations of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Lessons from the Sudanese resistance committees

The Sudanese working class have always stood and fought for their freedom, from the multi-century struggle against British, Ottoman and Egyptian imperialism to the ongoing struggle against the neocolonialism of the UAE. In recent history, the Sudanese working class have come together to topple dictatorship after dictatorship. October 1964: Ibrahim Abbud’s regime was brought down by a general strike. 1985: Muhammad Numeiri’s dictatorship felt the same fate following years of industrial action across many sectors, often tied together with the student movement.

Sudanese Anarchist Group Statement

Sudan has been witnessing a brutal war that has entered its second year, with millions of Sudanese displaced both internally and externally.

Millions are without homes or work to meet their most basic needs, and millions of children are without education. The calamities continue to afflict the vulnerable and simple people of Sudan.

Today, we strongly condemn the massacres committed by the Janjaweed militia against the innocent farmers in the Gezira State, which amounts to genocide.

Fundraiser for Union of Anarchists in Sudan

Calling comrades in the United Kingdom,

Sudan is going through its worst humanitarian crisis since April 15 last year. The war that broke out between the Rapid Support and the army caused the displacement of more than 18 million civilians and the withdrawal of all educational services facilities from service, creating the largest educational crisis in the country.
